Horsley Choral Society

Trustees’ Annual Report for the year to 31[st] March 2025

Charity registration number: 1092436

Trustees: John Stone Martin Stringfellow Zena Singer Fenella Parker-Mole

The charity is an unincorporated association. The trustees are all members of the choir and are selected along with the non-trustee members of the committee to ensure that the charity is well managed and meets the governance standards required of a registered charity. An independent person who is not a member of the choir reviews the charity’s annual accounts.

The charity’s objectives are “to promote, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of choral music in all its aspects by the presentation of public concerts, and for such charitable purposes as the members of the committee shall from time to time determine.”

The charity performed a joint concert with Oxshott Choral Society in June 2024 and its own concert in December as well as participating in the Leith Hill Music Festival, an annual choir festival established in 1909. The festival comprises a choir competition in which Horsley Choral Society won several categories as well as the overall contest this year, and an evening concert with 5 other choirs. In addition, the choir sang at various public events in the locality, including carols on the village green and at West Horsley Place.

The charity operates without any borrowing and has adequate reserves to support its ongoing activities. The accounts for the year to 31[st] March 2025 are attached. These are based on cash accounting and it is for this reason that the face of the accounts shows a substantial surplus of nearly £18,000 for the year, whereas the underlying result was a loss of nearly £3,000. The discrepancy reflects the receipt prior to the year-end of deposits from members for a choir tour undertaken and mostly paid for the following year. Choir members paid for the entire cost of the tour which, as intended, ultimately produced a neutral result for the charity, albeit spread across two financial years.
