_PRESENTATION EVENING_ 

3rd Wilnecote Scout Group Con�nues to make excellent progress with many of our Youngsters achieving their Chief Scout Award in All Sec�ons. 

Our Leaders con�nue to amaze me by the amount of ac�vi�es they provide and introduce to our youngsters. This is all thanks to the hard work and commitment of our Leadership Teams and Helpers. 

It is very pleasing that some of our leaders will be receiving Long Service Awards and an Award for Merit in Recogni�on for their Scou�ng endeavours.  The Group depends on the Loyalty and Longevity of its Leaders, Instructors and Trustees to ensure its con�nued Success and I thank them all for their dedica�on and outstanding efforts. 

The Trustees con�nue to work hard in order to ensure that, the Leaders have the resources and financial support they require to deliver Scou�ng to our Young People, along with ensuring we meet all the requirements and needs of our Scout Headquarters. 

Working with our young people is an absolute pleasure so if you too would like to be involved please do make yourself known. Also if you have skills that you think may be of use to us, we would like to hear from you. With a group of our size we always  need addi�onal help and support!

## 3RD WILNECOTE 

## _**SQUIRREL DREY**_ 

2024-25 opened with a joyful Easter themed District party at the DAC; full of crafts, treats and plenty of fun. 

Our badgework programme was full of excitement and variety. Highlights included: 

- 

- � Exciting Experiments who could forget the fizzing Coke and bottle rockets? 

- Feel Good — complete with homemade rice stress balls. 

- Gardener — where the Squirrels weeded and planted strawberries. 

- 

- � Get Creative and All Together featuring a time capsule planting. 

- 

- � Space Explorer Oreo moon phases were a clear favourite! 

- Brilliant Builder — sparking imagination and teamwork. 

We also enjoyed some fantastic themed evenings. In May, our Star Wars night earned everyone a Young Jedi badge for their camp blankets. We tackled the DAC’s traverse wall, juggled and spun plates at Circus Night, and tested our balance on a tightrope. November brought a fun bowling trip with - the Group, followed by Chinese New Year celebrations and a pancake making session. 

In April, we proudly joined the rest of the Group for the St George’s Day — parade in Tamworth thank you to all the parents who came along to support us. 

We also dipped into adventure with Paddle Sports, giving the little ones a splash of excitement and confidence on the water. 

July brought our camp at Beau, which was memorable not just for the activities, but for the very wet weather! Fortunately, the Squirrels were under cover in ‘The Den’ so missed some of the worst of the weather. Despite the downpours, spirits stayed high and muddy fun was had by all. 

Our Halloween party was another frightful success, with all the Squirrels dressed to impress (and spook!). 



Beyond the Easter Eggstravaganza, Tamworth District Squirrels hosted several other fun days. October’s joint Squirrel/Beaver Circus event featured not only circus skills but also a hands-on animal experience — from lizards and a big hairy spider to a snake and a prickly hedgehog. The Squirrels were incredibly brave! December brought our annual Christmas party and a visit from Santa. Huge thanks to Tara Blount for organising these brilliant events. 

Many Squirrels earned their Golden Acorn Award this year and were celebrated at the Annual Awards Ceremony at the Assembly Rooms in February. Congratulations to: 

Our year ended as it began with another high; we visited RAF Cosford Air museum to complete our Air Activities stage 1 badge. 

Besides the fun, June 2024 marked a bittersweet moment as some of our — original Squirrels moved up to Beavers a proud milestone for them and a reminder of how far they’ve come. 

Although I wish them well on their continued Scouting journey it was sad to say goodbye. 

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Rowan (Sue Elston), Baggy (Pete Elston), Young Leaders Robyn Elston and Heidi Ashby, and all the parents who support the section and their children every week. Your help makes everything we do possible.

## _**BEAVER COLONY**_ 

We have had another fantas�cally busy year with many amazing adventures. Beavers have enjoyed another full on program of ac�vi�es. 

Beavers have completed many badges. From the hobbies badge, digital ci�zen, digital maker, health and fitness, space and air ac�vi�es, to fire safety, road safety, emergency aid and much more! Throughout the year Beavers have enjoyed trying their hand at Bouldering, took part in a district Chinese new year day and enjoyed a St George themed sleepover in our Headquarters. Here they made shields, costumes, Dragons and planted Snapdragons in the garden. 

Many of our beavers also took part in our group camp at Beaudesert where they took part in fire ligh�ng, backwards cooking and enjoyed some campfire entertainment. 



Mothers and Fathers Days and Bug Hotels for the garden. Also over this last year Beavers have made poppies and took part in the local act of remembrance, had a Halloween Party, enjoyed doing Christmas Crafts and collected food for the local food bank. Thanks to everyone who helped with Beavers throughout the year and given us support, especially to our young leaders. We also welcome Deku (James Bowden) to our team.

## _**CUB PACK**_ 

## What a year 2024-25 has been! 

We’ve had a full programme of badgework including: Animal Carer, where we made bird feeders; Teambuilding & Problem solving; Book reader; and Home help & Home safety to name but a few. We collected items for the Tamworth food bank to go towards the World Team Challenge badge; we cooked roast chicken, mash, & carrots for the Cooks badge; we visited and planted carrots at the Belgrave Allotments whilst working towards the Naturalist badge; we had a visit from the Have a Heart Charity who brought their CPR dummies along with a defibrillator so we could finish off our Emergency Aid 3 badge; and as part of our Skills Challenge badge, Bones taught us some yoga, the winding down session went especially well. 

Besides our badgework meetings we have had some fun times too. Who can forget the Halloween horrors, sparklers & S’mores at our Bonfire evening around the fire pit, Santa Baggy at the Christmas party, Bowling at Namco, or the first time the Cubs went air rifle shooting at the DAC? 

Connor Altoft achieved his Chief Scout’s Silver award which is the highest award a Cub can attain; and we had 3 new sixers in Phoebe Tatterton, Kasey Castanheira, and Poppy Jeffrey. Congratulations and well done to all of you. 

Unfortunately the Group camp at Beaudesert in July was not up to its usual standard with some of the activities being cancelled plus once again the weather wasn’t on our side. However, thanks to all our leaders and parent helpers our programme went ahead and the Cubs still had a great time. Special thanks to Bonzai (Matthew Jeffrey) who helped me to carry on regardless. 



Tamworth District & Tamworth District Cubs have put on a lot of events during this period which we have attended. The St George’s Day parade where we had a very smart turnout as usual; Paddle sports; Cliff lakes in June; a fantastic sleepover at Twycross Zoo in September; the Panto in January which was so much fun (oh no it wasn’t!); and The BP Hike, ending with hot dogs, to celebrate Founders Day. A big thank you to all at District for organising these days out for us. 

Group events which the Cubs came to include: Drayton Manor in October with the Scouts; the Chocolate Bingo evening in November; the Christmas Fayre and, thanks to Stitch (Katy Elston) had the chance to attend RIAT. 

One of the biggest Group events of last year was the 90 years of Scouting in Wilnecote celebration on Ninefoot Park. It was nice to see so many Cubs there who had an awesome time with air rifle shooting, axe throwing, stalls, and the climbing wall which was probably the most popular . 

Personnel wise we had to say goodbye to young leader Farao (Evi Ashby); we wish her all the best for the future. But, we have said hello to Bones (Louise Altoft) who joined us after last years’ camp and has been invested into Cubs; Rowan (Sue Elston) who helps me with the programming : . and admin; and young leader Sophie / ‘\ Young. Alongside me as always are Baggy (Pete Elston, who else would make the tea?), young leader Jared, ‘ and Katy. My heart felt thanks to you all. y

## _**SCOUT TROOP**_ 

What a full and exciting year it’s been! 

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of Eleanor Bolton, Alice Wood, Alex Price, Rhys Price, and Robyn Elston, who — all earned the prestigious Chief Scout’s Gold Award the highest honour a Scout can receive in our Group. Their dedication and effort truly shine as an inspiration to us all. 

The year kicked off with the annual St George’s Day parade through Tamworth, where we joined the rest of the Group and District. As always, we had a fantastic turnout—and we were - undoubtedly the smartest looking Group there! 

Throughout the year, we’ve enjoyed a range of outings with Tamworth District, starting with Paddle Sports in April. It was brilliant to see so many Scouts having fun on the water. 

In June and September, Cliff Lakes became our playground, with Scouts bouncing, flipping, slipping, and diving off inflatables into the lake. Laughter and splashes were in abundance! 

October brought spooky thrills at the Drayton Manor ‘Spooktacular’, and in January, we headed to the pantomime (oh — yes we did!). The grand finale? All the leaders getting drenched much to the Scouts’ delight! 

We were thrilled to take first place in the District Shooting — Competition huge congratulations to everyone involved! 

Group Camp in July was, once again, a soggy adventure, but the rain didn’t dampen our spirits. We got stuck into muddy fun, sang around the campfire, and embraced every activity with enthusiasm. 



March ended the year on a high with a sleepover at the hall and a visit to RAF Cosford, helping us tick off our Air Activities badge in style. 

Our weekly meetings have been packed with variety and creativity: from crafting Warhammer characters and movie nights to nerf battles, archery, soldering, Claymation at the DAC, and climbing at — - Rock Up. We also explored tiling everyone got hands on, and it was such a hit that we’ve made it a tradition for new starters to add their own tile to our board. 

And now, the highlight of the year: our Water Camp in May at Ferny Crofts. Scouts earned their Power Coxswain badge and many others, showing resilience and teamwork even when things didn’t go quite to plan. I couldn’t be prouder of how they handled challenges and bounced back with determination. Beyond the water activities, we visited the Tank Museum, played on the beach, - hiked, tried rifle shooting and axe throwing, cooked backwoods style, and topped it all off with a memorable visit to HMS Victory. Huge thanks to the District for helping make this incredible camp happen. 

It’s been a joy to watch our Scouts grow into more confident, — responsible, and adventurous individuals always ready to share ideas and try something new. We’re excited for what’s ahead and can’t wait : to dive into another year of fun and > = discovery. 

A heartfelt thank you to Lynette for her unwavering support, and to our — amazing Young Leaders you make everything run smoother. Here’s to an - even more adventurous, fun filled year to come!

## _15 YEARS SERVICE_ 

## _MR DAVID DAVIES_ 

## _GROUP PRESIDENT_ 

**Dave became involved with 3rd Wilnecote Scout Group, as a parent helper, in July 2009 when he a�ended our Groups’ Summer Camp with his son Rhys, who was a member of our Cub Pack.** 

**In October 2009 Dave agreed to help out on a weekly basis as a Sec�on Assistant. He helped many of the Cubs work towards their Badges.** 

**In January 2012, during a tough period of upheaval for the Group, Simon (Kaa) asked Dave if he would be willing to take on the Chairpersons role. Dave accepted and remained in this role �ll 2023.** 

**Dave has helped us navigate through many challenges and has an amazing ability to bring out the posi�ves in all situa�ons. He has been a suppor�ve ear, a calming influence and o�en the voice of reason at Trustees Mee�ngs.** 

**par�cularly enjoyed sharing in the experiences of Outdoor Camps and Ac�vi�es. At Camps you usually found Dave helping serve food, taking photos and o�en having a good na�er to our excited Young Members.** 

**Dave had a passion for Photography and had quickly established himself as our Groups “go to” Photographer. His photographic exper�se has also led to him being asked to join the District team at the Scout Splash Weekend in the Solent. Even though Dave didn’t receive the usual “preferen�al treatment” that he is accustomed to at Group Camps, he loved every minute of it!** 

**various Steel frame companies and liaised with Council Officials to discuss lease terms. During the build, Dave helped whenever possible. From laying flooring to mastering his drilling skills (Albeit mostly in the wrong places), Dave was always willing to lend a much needed hand.**

## _AWARD FOR MERIT & 25 YEARS SERVICE AWARD_ 

## _MRS SUSAN ELSTON (ROWAN)_ 

## _BEAVER TEAM VOLUNTEER_ 

Sue became an Assistant Beaver Scout Leader with our Group in 1999, having seen her son go through our Colony into our Cub Pack. 

Working with Joan, Sue brought a new dimension to our Colony. With her endless enthusiasm and many new ac�vity ideas, Sue quickly became a highly valued and respected member of our Group. 

Sue has a bubbly personality and an infec�ous sense of humour which li�s and encourages all around her. 

Sue gained her wood badge in 2001 having a�ended several Leader training weekends and in 2010 Sue was recognised for her endeavours by the Scout Associa�on and presented with the Chief Scouts Commenda�on for Good Service. 

Over the years, Sue has been involved with the decora�ng of the winning Tamworth District Beaver Floats in the carnival, helped at the district scout shop, claimed thousands of pounds of Gi� Aid on the Groups behalf, supported many volunteers across several of our sec�ons,  and recently been instrumental in the se�ng up of our Squirrel Drey and then suppor�ng our Squirrel Lead Volunteer in delivering an exci�ng ac�vity program. 

Sue also, over these recent years, has been the driving force and chief organiser for our annual group camp which in itself is no small feat. The work involved in organising such a large camp is phenomenal. From filling out risk assessments, booking sites, organising ac�vi�es, working out catering supplies and shopping for a large hungry camp is a huge undertaking, but Sue remarkably seems to do it all with ease. 

From Camps to organising group Ac�vi�es, liaising with Trustees to suppor�ng other sec�ons, Sue con�nues to Invest huge amounts of �me and effort into 3rd Wilnecote Scout Group and is thoroughly deserving of this pres�gious award.

## _30 YEARS SERVICE AWARD_ 

## _MR SIMON GILLIVER (KAA)_ 

## _GROUP LEAD VOLUNTEER_ 

Whilst we are celebrating 30 years of service within Scouting for Simon today, his journey in the movement has been much longer than that. He started as a Beaver Scout with Two Gates before moving to 3rd Wilnecote Cubs, enjoying all the opportunities that Scouting has to offer. 

Once the option arose for Simon to become an Adult Leader he took it, so he could give back to his community and enable others to benefit from all of the activities and learning opportunities that he had been afforded. He took on the role of Assistant Cub Scout Leader. Being an enthusiastic member of the Leadership Team, he was also a regular pair of helping hands at both the Beaver and Scout sections, along with extracurricular activities too. For many years he took on the responsibility of organising the annual group camp, ensuring that as many young people as possible were able to meet all the requirements to achieve their Chief Scout Badges in every section. 

In 2009 Simon stepped into the role of Cub Scout Leader and only one year later found himself in the unenviable position of becoming a Group Scout Leader at a time when our Group was in the difficult circumstance of being evicted from the building that had been our home for 40 years. The role of Group Scout Leader is one which unfortunately entails many, many hours of administrative work which go on behind the scenes. This is a big responsibility for anyone, but made all the more difficult when you consider the amount of work that had to be put into finding a temporary home for our Group, writing endless Grant applications and actively fundraising with his own personal challenges as well as those completed by the group. Simon worked tirelessly on designing, obtaining planning permission, seeking contractors, speaking with local businesses to encourage donations of materials and equipment,  and playing an instrumental role in much of the construction of our Amazing New Head Quarters. The work has not ended there! Along with helping - his Leadership Team to continue to provide an unbelievably wide ranging program of Activities for our Young People, he has continued with his diligent efforts to ensure that our Group is run effectively and within the rules of the Scouting Association. In many respects it could be said that we would only appreciate all the work that Simon does if he were to stop doing it! It is this dedication to his volunteering that has been recognised in the past with a Chief Scouts Commendation for Good Service, and a Medal of Merit in 2016. 

Since his 25-years service award, Simon has continued to ensure that the Group makes the most of any opportunity for additional funding, applying for numerous grants and liaising with councillors,  ensuring that we have been able to complete works on our activity room upstairs, create an outside space for activities and badgework and organised a celebration of 90 years of Scouting in Wilnecote. These are just a small taster of the kind of things that just would not happen without the enthusiasm and driving force of our Group Scout Leader. 

Thankyou Simon, and Congratulations on your 30 Years Service Award. You should be very proud of all you have achieved.

## _40 YEARS SERVICE AWARD_ 

## _MRS JOAN GILLIVER (WILLOW)_ 

## _BEAVER TEAM LEAD_ 

_**Joan was one of the founder members of a trial Beaver Scout Colony at Two Gates in 1983. In October 1984 she officially became an Assistant Beaver Leader with Two Gates Scout Group.**_ 

_**In 1992, Joan formed 3[rd] Wilnecote's Beaver Scout Colony as Beaver Scout Leader and proceeded to gain her wood badge in 1998.**_ 

_**Joan has been a solid and reliable leader. She has taken a very ac�ve part in our group, not only by running our beaver colony, but by suppor�ng the cub pack at camp and taking the leading role in all the groups fundraising ac�vi�es.**_ 

_**Joan formerly played a leading role in District Beaver Scout Ac�vi�es, and has helped organise district fun days, theme days, Beaver scout cross country and many other ac�vi�es. Joan Organised the District Beaver Float, for Tamworth Carnival, winning “Best Float” all five years she was involved.**_ 

_**In March 2001 Joan Received the “Chief Scouts Commenda�on” and in April 2011 she received the “Award for Merit” in recogni�on of her efforts to scou�ng.**_ 

_**Joan has Completed 40 Years Service to Scou�ng as a Beaver Scout Leader. (Pre Da�ng Beavers as they officially became part of the Scout Associa�on in April 1986).**_ 

_**Joan con�nues to work hard for 3[rd] Wilnecote Scout Group in ALL aspects, from helping out at Cub Pack mee�ngs during a Leader Shortages, Si�ng on the Board of Trustees for our Group, promo�ng scou�ng at community fun-days and public events, pu�ng on the food and beverages at our A.G.Ms, and much more whilst s�ll maintaining a fantas�c program of ac�vi�es for our Beaver Sec�on.**_ 

_**As part of the “Friends of 3[rd] Wilnecote Scout Group Fundraising Group” (F3FG) she has ac�vely run and promoted many fundraising events. The F3FG have been responsible for raising over £10000.00 towards the building of our new scout HQ building.**_ 

_**Addi�onally, Joan has been very ac�ve during the building of our new scout HQ on Ninefoot Park. She’s the was o�en first person there to help us take deliveries of materials and move them inside (by no means light work!). She has helped with various tasks from installing insula�on, pain�ng, cleaning, making tea and generally suppor�ng and keeping morale up. Joan was pre�y much been on call every day, to allow contractors access to the new HQ  so they can complete the specialist works.**_ 

_**In 2021 Joan received the Bar to the Award for Merit for her ongoing endeavours. A much deserved recogni�on from the Scout Associa�on for her efforts!**_ 

_**Joan con�nues to be a highly valued and respected member of 3[rd] Wilnecote Scout Group.**_

IN ORDER TO GAIN THE HIGHEST TRAINING AWARD, SCOUTS MUST COMPLETE A WIDE VARIETY OF  ACTIVITIES AND CHALLENGES. THESE INCLUDE EMERGENCY AID, FIRE SAFETY, SWIMMING, HIKING, CAMPING, CANOEING, SAILING, RAFTING, TARGET SHOOTING, CLIMBING AND MANY OTHERS. IN ADDITION TO THESE ACTIVITIES, SCOUTS HAVE ALSO TAKEN PART IN PATROL LEADER TRAINING COURSES AND HAVE TAKEN A LEADING ROLE IN THE  RUNNING OF THE TROOP AND IN THE TRAINING OF YOUNGER SCOUTS.
