G.S.L REPORT

WELCOME EVERYONE TO OUR A.G.M

3rd Wilnecote Scout Group continues to make excellent progress and has certainly benefitted from relocating to our fantastic new Headquarters.

Our new Headquarters has opened many opportunities to our Young People and is making our Leaders lives simpler by having what they need to hand. Although not complete in its entirety , our Headquarters is a functional Building and I’m pleased to finally welcome you all to our first A.G.M here.

Our Young members have been on many Amazing Adventures with the Leadership team being able to provide their first Camps Since Lockdown! For many of our Young People ,and some of our leaders, this was their first ever camps with the group! Many thanks to all our Leaders for their hard work, dedication and determination to get back to some form of normality.

It is very pleasing to see that some of our leaders are to receive Long Service Awards. The Group depends on the Loyalty and Longevity of its Leaders, Instructors and Trustees to ensure its continued success.

This year we were sad to say goodbye to Honorary Scouter and Trustee Ronald “Skip” Stockton who sadly passed. Ron was a stalwart of our group and is sadly missed. Our Trustees continue to work and ensure our groups continued success, and that the values instilled from our predecessors remain embedded in our foundations. I thank them for all their efforts and continued support.

Tribute to Honorary Scouter Ron Stockton (SKIP)

by the Group Scout Leader

Rons scoung journey started when he became part of 3[rd] Wilnecote Scout Groups parent commiee on the 16th March 1966 along with his wife Irene. His son Marn was a member of the scout troop at the me.

In May 1968 Irene agreed to become Group Secretary, and by July, Ron agreed to take on the role as Assistant Scout Leader along with Bernard Evans. He became the Scout Leader “SKIP” in June 1971.

He remained as SKIP ll his rerement as Leader in May 1996.

Even aer rerement SKIP has remained acvely involved with the group and was awarded the tle of Honorary Scouter by the Scout Associaon.

Over the years SKIP has provided many camps and experiences for the young members of our community, oen doing the catering for approxi- mately 40 60+ members. Catering for such a large number did occasionally throw up a few mishaps. I’m sure many of us remember phrases like “Would you like a slice of gravy?” or even “Custard? Yes? One lump or Two?”

SKIPs stories whilst camping are legendary. From the Phantom Coachman that rides through the tunnels of the Chase to the Infamous and Elusive Cannocks! Stories that are sll part of today’s camping experiences.

SKIP was all about educang, skill sharing, camping and making memories. I’m sure many of us here today have a few to share too of past camps and adventures.

SKIP was also involved with scoung across Tamworth District as a member of the District Execuve Commiee and also the appointments commiee veng All new potenal Leaders.

He also connued as Honouree Trustee to 3[rd] Wilnecote and helped advise and support us on many of our decisions regarding our future.

In Total SKIP has been involved with scoung and his beloved 3[rd] Wilnecote Scout Group for an incredible 56 years!

recognised. In 1980 SKIP was awarded the “Medal of Merit” followed by the “Bar to the Medal of Merit” in 1995 for outstanding service to Scoung.

In April 2002 SKIP along with Irene (Mrs SKIP) was invited to Windsor Castle to be presented with the presgious “Silver Acorn” in Recognion of Specially Disnguished Service.

Ron “SKIP” leaves a lasng legacy and leaves us with so many wonderful scoung memories.

His stories have bought many a smile to countless generaons and his support and encouragement has enriched many lives both young and older.

childhood right through to, and beyond adulthood.

We will carry his Baton onwards and upwards.

We are Proud and Honoured that we have had the privilege to spend so much me with such a remarkable man.

Rest Easy Boss & Thankyou.

3RD WILNECOTE

BEAVER COLONY

We have had a challenging me returning aer the - Covid 19 lockdown but we have sll managed to deliver a good program of acvies for our beavers. Beavers have completed many badges including the Communicator, Space, Emergency Aid Level 1 and the Gardening badge.

I'd like to thank Rowan (Sue Elston) for taking on a leading role in the planning and running the beaver badgework program. Ash (Sue Stonehouse) and our Young Leader, Hazel (Chloe Greaves) for helping to deliver it.

Over this last year Beavers have took part in our local act of remembrance, Collected food items for the Food Bank, enjoyed a Christmas party, played Prize Bingo, went Bowling at Namco, Trampolining at Jump Xtreme, had a tour of Holy Trinity Church whilst sharing their knowledge of Easter, Traverse

Walling at the District Acvity Centre and tried water acvies at the District led Paddle Sports Day on the River in the Castle Grounds. Beavers joined the rest of the group in July for Summer Camp at Beaudesert Cannock Chase. Due to previous camps being cancelled because of Covid, for all our Beavers this was their first ever camp! Summer Camp was very enjoyable and the Beavers parcularly liked the water fight (as it was very hot) and Yoga in the shade. Thankyou Hathi (Rebecca ) for sharing your skills.

Thanks to everyone who helped with Beavers throughout the year and given us support.

CUB PACK

Another fantasc year as Cub Scout Leader. The 2022 Group camp, back on the fields at Beaudessert, was fantasc! and what a scorcher it was too.

The Group were able to take part in backwoods cooking, fire lighng, bivouacking, night hikes searching for Cannock’s, plus, trying to drown me during the tradional water fight! The Cubs have been very busy this year. An edited highlights of the badges earned are; Team Work challenge, Scienst, Internaonal, Athlecs and Naturalist. We also were privileged to award 3 Chief scouts silver awards, the highest award a Cub Scout can achieve. BRAVO to everyone!

We have also welcomed a new leader to our team. Rebecca (Hathi) brings with her many, many excing (and messy) ideas that have been well received by

the Cub Pack.

The leadership team is then completed by our - fantasc young leaders: Olivia, George and Evi. Backed up in the kitchen by the long suffering Bagheera.

I thank them all for their hard work and enthusiasm in delivering the program of acvies.

with several pares, an internaonal food tasng event and a camp fire cookout.

Lots to come in the new year and many more adventures to be had.

3RD WILNECOTE

SCOUT TROOP

This year was always going to be special with the return of face to face meetings following the covid pandemic.

Scouts have returned with a renewed enthusiasm for knowledge, fun and adventure!

We have seen the new member numbers steadily rise over the year and now have a fantastic group of Scouts, each bringing their own individuality to the weekly meetings.

The return of the Scout week camp to Kielder - Water has been the highlight of our year despite the weather! The packed activity programme saw us paddle boarding, rafting, sailing, shooting, abseiling and hiking to name a few. We visited a birds of prey centre and got up close and personal with some magnificent Owls, Eagles, Hawks and - Falcons a fitting excursion to see some of our patrol namesakes.

It was also a pleasure to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee whilst we were away.

July saw the return of group camp at Beaudesert. It was fantastic to see our Scouts sharing their knowledge and experience with some of the younger group members who, for many, was their first ever camp.

In weekly meetings we have been working hard towards our World Challenge badge in conjunction with the practical elements of camp and have recently started our Science badge work where everyone loved the chance to do some soldering!

Our older Scouts have been working on their Chief Scout Gold Awards and we are all extremely proud of their commitment to this. Congratulations to Chloe, Evi and Grace on Achieving their well deserved Gold Awards.

We have some exciting events coming up this term and beyond including a Halloween party, sponsored stay awake, sleepovers and camps.

We are all especially looking forward to attending the Armistice Day Parade and the chance to pay our respects within the community.

All that remains is to say thank you to our young people for making this year so incredibly special and to our leaders and helpers who ensure these fantastic meetings and activities can continue.

Peter became involved with the Group when his son Philip was a member of the Beaver Scout Colony.

His wife Sue and Son Philip are both acve leaders within the Group. Sue (Rowan) is an Assistant Beaver Leader and Philip (Roo) is the Cub Scout Leader.

Peter, along with son Philip, have been instrumental in so many past events. They helped to organise and run many Group Camps, Youth Hostelling Expedions, Scout Hikes, Patrol Camps and countless Air Rifle Shoong Sessions. Peter was the joint driving force for the introducon of Whitsun Week Camps for the Scout Troop and has helped organise these at both Kielder Forest and in the Lake District.

If is fair to say that without Peter, many of the Scout Troop Acvies simply wouldn’t have been possible.

Catering for large numbers at Group Camp is a mammoth undertaking and yet Peter manages it with ease. From driving the Minibus to Whit Camps and Hikes, to achieving Permits for Air Rifle Target Shoong and Archery, Peter has opened many doors for so many young people.
