Trustees

The chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, and treasurer shall constitute the four trustees of the executive committee. The executive committee shall have the power to make decisions in any emergency and to carry on business between the meetings of the trustees but all actions and decisions of their committee shall be reported to the trustees for confirmation and ratification at the next meeting.

*Mrs Godfrey paused her involvement in December 2020 until August 2021 due to Covid illness.

Appointment of Trustees

There shall be at least four trustees. Every future trustee shall be appointed by resolution of the trustees passed at a special meeting called under clause J of the trust deed.
If for any reason trustees cannot be appointed in accordance with the foregoing position the statutory power of appointing new or additional trustees shall be exercisable.

Constitution

Declaration of trust dated 19/03/2002 as amended by deed dated 17/03/2010 as amended by deed dated 31/03/2010 as amended by deed dated 22/01/2011.

Objectives

(I) To relieve poverty and sickness in South Africa and elsewhere in particular by providing relief to orphans and their carer’s.

(II) To advance education, training, personal development and employment including self-employment, partnerships and co-operatives of children and/or their carer’s in South Africa and elsewhere.
(III) To preserve and protect health of children and their carer’s in South Africa and elsewhere.

Summary of main activities

Our main activities are and remain, to raise and distribute funds to partner projects in South Africa and elsewhere, namely in Tanzania, and any other African country and project, which the board of trustees deems worthy.

We continue to focus on health care and education, in areas that continue to be affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty, and the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. We continue to disburse a large proportion of our funds to support the running of the clinic at 1000 Hills Community Helpers and we sponsor a bed at the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust respite unit. Regarding education, we have a broader spectrum, supporting a primary 7 class at a rural school in Tanzania, as well as continuing to help 20 students to further their education at university or college in South Africa. Many of the scholarship students we support returned to their universities and colleges and we had three students graduating in 2021/22. With the support of Zero2Five we continued to support a small crèche as it became a vital lifeline for the small children attending, providing their only meal of the day.

Our staff, trustees and volunteers continue to fundraise in the UK and our regular donors continue to help us deliver our objectives as listed above. Our regular donor base, including our major donors remain loyal and we recruited an additional corporate donor in May 2021.

Whilst neither the Charity Director nor any trustees were able to visit South Africa in 2021/22, contact remained strong through online video calls and regular messaging.

We are proud to report that we disbursed nearly £61,000 to Africa in 2021/22 and we were able to support specific initiatives which assisted the organisations we support with their responses to local and national pressures. We sent a shipment of blankets and clothing in March 2022. In addition, £4,500 was sent care of KYGN UK to the primary school in Tanzania.

Summary of main achievements

Health

1000 Hills Community Helpers, South Africa

1000 Hills Community Helpers received ongoing funding throughout 2021/22. This project continues to focus on healthcare, both treatment of chronic conditions and preventative care through

education and raising awareness. This year GAGA UK’s funding allowed over 900 babies to be seen at the Baby Wellness Clinic.

HIV/AIDS – Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, South Africa

Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust remained a trusted partner and the sponsor a bed scheme (contributing towards the costs for one of the beds in the 24-bed unit, helping with the unit’s running costs and helping to ensure that their vital services in helping those in the end stages of AIDS can continue) was adopted again for 2022.

This unit remains the only facility of its kind in the area, providing free, high-quality palliative and respite care.

Abandoned Babies, South Africa

We continue to receive a small, regular monthly donation which was requested to be restricted to Likhon iThemba. In addition, in 2021/22 a few one-off donations were received against the appeal page on our website. These donations are forwarded to Likhon iThemba every 6 months (or less if other funds are sent), to keep costs for GAGA to a minimum.

Isthembiso Community Care Centre (previously The White House), South Africa

Russell Sthe Chili continues to operate his Gogo Lunch Club. This project suffered setbacks during the Civil unrest in Kwa Zulu Natal and later in 2022 the extreme flooding. Nevertheless, weekly lunches are still provided for 30 to 40 elderly caregivers.

Education

Sangobeg Scholarships, South Africa

The Sangobeg Scholarship programme continued to be a valuable part of our portfolio, 20 individuals received some form of funding from the programme in 2021/22, ranging from subsistence support, through fully funding degree, diploma, and vocational training. Funds received by David Morrison are restricted specifically for this programme. David Morrison continues to be a steadfast supporter of GAGA UK, and the student programme, maintaining a keen interest in the progress of the students. We were delighted that 3 of the students graduated in 2021/22.

KYGN, Tanzania

We continue to support the work of KYGN UK and their work with the KYGN School in Tanzania. The 2021 Primary 7 cohort again performed remarkably well in the Secondary School entrance examinations. Thanks to our new corporate sponsor, GAGA UK also provided funds for the Primary 1B class in 2021, an arrangement that is set to support this cohort throughout their primary education.

Early Childhood Development, South Africa

With the support of a South African organisation Zero2Five, GAGA UK helped a small, independent creche start up in KwaZulu Natal. Caring for 20-25 children this small organisation is providing much needed care and early years learning.

Fundraising 2021/22

June saw the first face to face event in the 2021/22 year, a fundraising afternoon at the Hampton and Solihull Cricket Club. Combined with a Crowdfunding campaign, this event raised funds to allow two orphaned sisters to commence teacher training in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. An exclusive open swimming event at Cliff Lakes Tamworth from the World Champion Ice Swimmer, Caroline Saxon was sadly cancelled due to the February storms, culminating in Storm Eunice the day before meant that only one person signed up, so the event was cancelled. Other smaller events, including a Quiz Night and coffee morning, raised around £500

In October 2021 12 boxes of Streetwear clothing were donated by Vsnary a Birmingham based brand. This was stored at GAGA premises until it could be shipped in March 2022.

The Remembering Tree project was in situ from 30th October at Holy Trinity and into April 2022 on the Bancroft Gardens. In the winter of 2021/22, I yarn bombed the big tree by the canal basin and

this attracted a lot of attention. Volunteers joined the team to yarn bomb the Waterside trees. The income from the TRT was very strong in 2021/22 amounting to nearly £3.5k. in addition to trees being sponsored by local businesses and community groups, some panels were sold to a couple in Cheltenham, and they decorated trees in their square with our poster on! The project also featured in the Church Times in April 2022, and GAGA UK has already been approached by Colliers in Coventry about decorating some trees there in the 2022/23 project

We are grateful for the ongoing support of our ambassadors, volunteers, fundraisers, and supporters, without whom our work would not be possible. Our link with the local business networking forum made a significant difference to our fundraising in 2021/22.

Rotary Clubs: Alcester and Bidford and Stratford upon Avon Rotary Clubs continued to support GAGA UK, through fundraising events and donations.

Trustees

We remain a strong organisation with a dedicated board of trustees who continue to work towards our objectives. The officers of the Board were reappointed at the May 2022 AGM.

Fundraising Policy

GAGA UK is a member of the Fundraising Regulator. GAGA UK will continue to show our commitment to accountability and transparency through prompt and thorough reporting and analysis of accounts. There were no complaints received in the reporting period.

Reserves Policy

In 2014/15 the Board of Trustees invested £10,000 into a deposit account. This deposit remains in place, and acts as a reserve fund, were it to be needed. It would help to cover almost one quarter’s worth of donations to those we have ongoing commitments to. There is no indication that current events will necessitate drawdown of these reserves in the foreseeable future.
