As As our our newsletters newsletters never never fail fail to to report, report, overpopulation overpopulation of of stray stray dogs dogs and and cats cats is is a a still still a a huge huge problem problem[in] in Greece Greece and and the[the] cause cause of[of] much much needless needless suffering suffering which which has has worsened worsened as as abandonment abandonment

of of unwanted unwanted animals animals has has proliferated proliferated in in the the wake wake of of the the economic economic crisis crisis and and the the Coronavirus Coronavirus outbreaks. outbreaks. Attempts Attempts to to[control] control[the] the problem problem are are therefore therefore[of] of paramount paramount importance importance and and CARAT CARAT continues continues[to] to allocate allocate a a large[large] percentage percentage of[of] its its income income to to neutering neutering campaigns campaigns for for stray stray dogs dogs and and

cats. cats. CARAT now CARAT now has has a a good good working working relationship relationship with with a a number number of of Greek Greek vets vets who who are are prepared prepared to to

offer offer lower lower fees fees for for sterilising sterilising strays. strays.

CARAT CARAT[has] has continued continued to to support support[the] the smaller smaller shelters, shelters, rescuers rescuers and and individuals individuals in[in] Greece Greece who who are are at at the the real real grass grass roots roots of of rescue rescue and and are are often often overlooked overlooked because because they they have have no no time time for for self-publicity. self-publicity. This This year, year, due due to to increased increased support support we we have have been been able able to to offer offer help help to to a a few few new new individuals individuals and and societies societies[in] in their their tireless tireless work work for for the the strays strays on on[the] the[street.] street. Sadly, Sadly, poisoning poisoning[is] is still still seen seen by by some some as as the the solution solution to to the the stray stray problem problem although although it it is is illegal, illegal, intensely intensely cruel cruel and and ineffective. ineffective.

This This year year again again we we had had fewer fewer pleas pleas for for help help from from tourists tourists who who have have found found a a suffering suffering animal animal or or who who want want to[to] adopt adopt the[the] stray[stray] dog[dog][they] they have have fallen fallen[in] in love[love] with with while while on on holiday. holiday. Much Much clearer[clearer] guidance guidance on on what what to to do do when when tourists tourists find find an an abused abused animals animals[in] in Greece Greece and and an an increasingly increasingly proactive proactive attitude attitude from from some some police police forces[forces] towards towards animal animal cruelty cruelty means means that[that] many many tourists tourists can can take take action action personally personally without without needing needing to to burden burden local local animal animal welfare welfare volunteers. volunteers.

Due Due to to time time constraints constraints caused caused by by[family] family issues, issues, plus plus the the crisis crisis[in] in rescue rescue within within the the UK UK where where overproduction overproduction of[of] dogs dogs[by] by breeders breeders and and[the] the XL XL Bully Bully ban ban has[has] led led to to overflowing overflowing shelters shelters and and lack lack of of good good homes, homes, during during 2023 2023 we we have have concentrated concentrated our our efforts efforts more more upon upon our our sterilising sterilising programs programs for for both both dogs dogs and and cats cats within within Greece Greece than than the the rehoming rehoming of of individual individual animals. animals.

The The donkey donkey sanctuary sanctuary on on Crete, Crete, Agia Agia Marina Marina Donkey Donkey Rescue, Rescue, which which receives receives regular regular support support from from CARAT CARAT has[has] continued continued[to] to rescue rescue abandoned abandoned or or ill-treated ill-treated donkeys donkeys and and[has] has never never turned turned down down a a donkey donkey[in] in desperate desperate need. need. CARAT CARAT continues continues to to cover cover the[the] transport transport costs costs of[of] bringing[bringing] these these donkeys donkeys to to[the] the[safety] safety of of the the sanctuary. sanctuary.
