CARING FOR THE ANIMALS TRUST Trustees Re rtforthe ear ended 31 December 2021 CAIiAT continues to support Small Broups or individuals in GTeece who rexue or care for abused or abandoned animals. .45 our newsletter5 never fail to report. overwpulation of stray does and cats is a still a huge roblem in Greece and the cause of much needless suffering which has worsened as abandonment t)f unwanted animals has proliferated in the wake of the Konomic crisis and the Coronavirus ,.)utbreaks. Attempts to control the pmblem are therefore of paramount imwrtance and CARAT ontinues to allocate a large perntage of its limtted income to neutering. CARAT now has a good 'working relationship wth a number of Greek vets who are prepared to offer lower fees for sterilisin8 .ftAT has continued to SUPPOrt the smaller shelters, rescuers and individuals in Greece who are at he real grass roots of rescue arKI are often overlooked because they have time for self-publicity. This year, due to increased support we have tn able to offer help to a few new indtviduals and ocieties in their tireless work for the strays on the street. Sadly, kX)isoning is still seen by some as the solution to the stray problem although tt is illegal. intensely cn1 and ineffective. 48ain this year we have also had increased pleas for help from tourists who have found a suffering animal or who want to adopt the stray dog tFw have fallen in love with while on holiday, and we are ..iappy to report that we have managed to find help for several anirna15 who have now been adopted in the UK. -ARAT's literature lin Greek), particularly that relating to neUterIF is Still in demand and in setting Jut Simply the benefrts both for the animals and society, has often helped to change a deep- seated belief that the pmcedure is unnatural and harmful to the animal. The donkey sanctuary on Crete, Agia Marina Donkey Rescue. which receives regular sUPPOrt from CARAT has continued to rescue abandoned or ill-treated donkeys. CARAT continue5 to rnaintsin tts status as a "no overheads- society, so that all income reIved directly benefits the animals. It is still a very srnall organisation but has a loyal following thanks to whose generosity much suffering has been al18ted and many animals have found new caring owners despf(e the misguided efforts of a minority to preverbt rescued animats from being adopted in other EU countries. Some Greek State Vets are continuingto refuse to issue the paperwork needed for dogs and cats to travel to homes abroad. but it is hoped that new support from inside the Government will end the obstruction of foreign adoptions for Greek companion animals.
