The Cuckoo’s Nest

AGM Annual Report 2023 – 2024

Thank you for taking the time to support us at our AGM.

This year has seen considerable change within our body of Volunteers. We have lost several experienced volunteers- either through paid job opportunities, retirement or long-term absence/ sickness. That is the main reason we had to close on Tuesdays to enable those volunteers left to cover extra shifts. Our volunteers have really stepped up to the mark covering lots of extra shifts and taking on additional responsibilities. This brings me on to our recruitment drive. You’ll see our new flyers (courtesy of Kim and Clare) on y our seats. If you, or anyone you know, could spare 2 – 3 hours a week, please get in touch. You’ll be most welcome. Please spread the word.

Despite having to close on Tuesdays our weekly sales have been pretty much the same. Having a weekly readout enables us to identify which categories are selling well and which we need to promote more. Having more variety of goods, other than books, in the bookshop has certainly increased sales as do the special promotions held. Although our annual sales are slightly less than lasy year Jazz Weekend, Christmas and Easter really boosted our income. We are always looking at ways to try to improve our retail space and to make the shops more customer friendly. We use Facebook to advertise special events and to increase sales of bric–a–brac and rare books we have been using Sheffield Auction Gallery (who do not charge us commission). Recycling income has gradually decreased so we are also looking at other ways to make money from these items.

As a ‘thank you’ for their hard work our volunteers enjoyed a Christmas meal at the Golf Club or had vouchers for Fresh and Fruity. They continue to work hard to enable us to give out our biannual grants. It has been really noticeable that more grants have been given to various groups who help with food poverty in and around Marsden, namely St. Barthlomew’s Community Café and Food Bank, Colne Valley Help and Marsden Resilience Fund. Since opening we have given well over £700,000 in grants to local community groups.

We are always trying to improve the shop premises. We are having new wooden windows fitted within the next few weeks. We are in the throes of having to address damp problems in the cellar, too. Hopefully we may soon be able to revamp our small kitchen space.

Finally, I would like to thank Kim sand Phil for sorting out this evening’s refreshments, our committee and volunteers for their hard work which enables us to provide that little extra something for our community groups and to you our public who support us by donating or purchasing goods.

Here’s to another successful year.

Cuckoo’s Nest AGM

Treasurer’s Report

We have seen another good year of trading in both shops – thank you all for your support!

2023 – 24 22-23 21-22
Bookshop sales 20085.68 19397 13009
Top shop sales 49364.81 54090 43232
Donations, recycling etc 2079.70 2516 3393
71530.19 76003 59634
Community and other grants 20052.74 17223 9470.29
No. of local groups supported 23 17 15

As you will see, income is down on the previous year. This is partly due to the recycling company (Colltex) paying us less for things that we cannot sell, and partly due to the cost of living crisis. However, because we have had fewer shop expenses during the year, we were able to give out more grants, which is great!

Income and expenditure overall for the last three years looks like this:

Where does the money come from? We look at the different categories we sell in the shop, and in the 2023-4 year this was:

This has informed our decision to stop selling electrical items in the shop.

We now have the full accounts for 2023-24 – do please come and ask if you have any questions or would like more details.
