My name’s Clare and for the past year I’ve been the chair of the Cuckoo’s Nest.
To say we’ve had a busy year is a bit of an understatement. Both of our shops continue to do well and as always, we are extremely grateful for your continued support, and to all of our dedicated volunteers who always work extremely hard but this year they really have gone the extra mile for us. It hasn’t always been easy with all the building work and the closing and reopening of the shops.
This brings me on to the work we’ve been doing in both the flat & shop. An enormous amount of building work has already taken place in the flat and in the shop. Including a full re-wire of both the shop and flat, replacing all doors in the flat with fire doors and replacing the ceiling between the shop and flat with a fire-retardant ceiling to bring them up to date with the new regulations, these are just a few of the things which have been done.
We did try our best to keep the shops open whilst the majority of the building work was taking place.
Obviously, it was necessary to close for a short period whilst the ceilings were being replaced and the shopfloor was being rewired.
We decided to take advantage of the shop being empty and have new flooring fitted and give the shop a fresh coat of paint.
Unfortunately, we are not yet in a position to rent the flat out. No one could be more disappointed about this than me.
We were hoping that we could offer it for rent by April however we suffered a setback when we had the bad weather and storms. Rain started coming in through the walls/roof of both the flat and the shop. We’ve had no choice but to pause the work in the flat for now until we can solve this problem.
We have roofer due to start work in September. This is not a small task, and it will involve us having scaffolding around the shop once again.
It has been 21years since The Cuckoos’ Nest opened its doors for the first time. This is such a significant achievement for everyone involved throughout the years that we cannot let this go unmarked. We are planning a series of different events & new things throughout the year some of which are-
We are about to launch a brand-new website with a new logo thanks to the winner of our logo competition. (Winner to be announced at the end)
With the help of the WI we are organising a fashion show which will take place in September. We are still looking for models
We are also planning on selling our own Christmas cards featuring phots/pictures of Marsden. We will be asking you to send in photos very soon.
We are also hoping to start our very Marsden Santa Dash And not to forget our 21[st] Birthday event on the 3[rd of] September.
It is our hope that we can get to 21 new things within 12 months, but we could be stretching ourselves a little, but we do like a challenge!
I’m now going to hand you over to Helen/Aine to deliver our treasurers report.
