The Cuckoo’s Nest AGM No. 1090934 29[th] July 2021 Chairperson’s report

Registered Charity

This has been an extraordinary year full of challenges for people throughout the world. It has been difficult for the Cuckoo’s Nest but we have risen to the challenge.

Our premises (No. 40 Peel Street) were previously rented but when the property came on the market we decided to purchase it. It was a monumental task to raise the deposit for the mortgage but thanks to the generosity of individuals and the fantastic fundraising efforts of organisations throughout the village we made it. The whole village pulled together showing how much the shop is valued by the people of Marsden.

I must pay tribute to Wendy Jones, Aine Welch and Tracy Greaves who managed to get to grips with the complexities of buying the property. Wendy has since decided to retire after a job well done and Tracy*************************

Aine continues as secretary and does an amazing job. We have so many volunteers who work really hard and keep the shops running smoothly. A good number of staff did not return after the long break due to Covid. Their contributions to the life of the Cuckoo’s Nest will not be forgotten and we thank all present and past staff for their dedication and hard work. Since re-opening we have welcomed new staff but there’s always room for new recruits, so if you or anyone you know would like to work with us, you will find a friendly welcome.

Since re-opening our hours have changed. We now open on Tuesday when we were previously closed but opening time each day is 11. a.m. instead of 9.30. At the moment we are continuing with Covid restrictions, and our customers are overwhelmingly compliant.

Donations of goods to sell continue to be plentiful. This sometimes causes problems as storage space is limited. However we are continually grateful for donations as we are for our loyal customers.

This year is the 20[th] birthday of the Cuckoo’s Nest. Under the circumstances the committee decided to postpone celebrations until next year, our 21[st] .

Sandra Leyland Chairperson
