statement of Publlc Benefit Objecllves, aims and acllvHles ol the charity A summary of the objectlves of the charity as set out In Its governlng document. The primary purpose is to relieve poverty. distress and sickness," in particular. by providing activity services for the elderly and housebound, neighbourhood care, support for carers, and community schemes. and to develop other services as deemed necessary from time to time. The charlty's alms Includlng the changes or dlfferences It seeks to rnake through Its acllvllles. The aims are very much the same as the objectives. Some of the changes and differences that we aim to achieve include. but are not exclusively limited to, prolonged habitation of clients in their own homes, as part of continued independent living and maintenance of as high a standard of living as possible,. reduction in social isolation. The activities such as yoga and Tai Chi and seated exercise are to encourage a more active life style. An explanatlon of the charlty's sfrategles lor achlevlng Its stated objectlves. To keep in place adequate paid and volunteer staff to meet the needs of FIN clients in all areas of operation and for maintaining its fleet of vehicles to a standard that they are always available for use by our clients. Have a variety of services and activities to entice clientele to live more positively through participation in less sedentary pursuits. Maintain working relationships with our partners and inform them of noticeable changes to the health and welfare of mutual clients. Apply to grant making trusts for funding to enhance the services on offer. The Charlty's grant maklng pollcles FIN Community Centre does not give grants. Soclal or programme related Investment No direct financial investments are made, but investment in the lives of our clients is made through the services offered by FIN. The activities offered by Friend in Need are designed to help people [it's clients] maintain a healthy lifestyle. through various forms of exercise, social activities around a cup of tea and a piece of cake. as well as cooked meols,. the provision of information and advice conceming nutrition, financial affair5 Ibenefits]etc. We refer to other organisations, when necessary.
The contributlon of volunteers FIN would not be able to operate without its dedicated volunteers. FIN has approximately 35 volunteers working across all areas of service delivery. from cleaning up. to one-to-one interaction with clients. for example. Volunteers give as much time as they are able and even one hour per week is welcome, although we ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months. Moreover. like all voluntary organisation5, we are constantly in need of new people. This is particularly so. as many of our long serving volunteers are inevitably ageing. Volunteers work as administrators, activity facilitators [play games. lead quizzes etc.] serve refreshment5 and meals. drivers, befrienders etc. Volunteer drivers, on reaching the age of 70, cannot drive a minibus without undergoing a medical which is not available on the NHS. Summary of the maln acllvltles of the charfty In relatlon to Its objecllves FIN has continued its good work throughout 2023- 2024 and remains an organisation held dear by the local community. However, like many small charities, it has faced challenging times as it tries to navigate its way through financially difficult circumstances. While we delight in the wonderful work FIN continues to cary out, we also need to acknowledge that another substantial deficit raises concerns about the best way forward for the organisation. The charity is in the fortunate position to have been bequeathed sizeable legacies in the past and it is essential that these reserves are used to provide services that benefit older members of the community {FIN's raison d'etre), rather than merely covering annual loses. With local authority, core funding opportunities heavily depleted in the current economic climate, the Management Committee is acutely aware that FIN must look to innovate and explore new avenues and models, so that it may thrive in the future and remain at the hearl of East Barnet Village. FIN'S activity centre, which opens on a Monday and Thursday, has always been the mainstay of the charity's services and continues to provide an essential provision for older adults. It is a dementia friendly service that offers members the opportunity to stay socially engaged and active. However, numbers have never fully recovered since reopening following closure during the Covid pandemic. Our target is a minimum of 20 member5 per day, which is necessary to ensure the service remains financially viable, but we now often have less than l O per day which is unsustainable in the long term. New promotional material has been produced and is being extensively distributed and we hope this will raise awareness of what FIN has to offer. We continue our efforts to connect with other agencies, such as Bamet Council's Prevention and Wellbeing Team, Age UK Barnet, local care homes and home care providers, to explore ways to increase our numbers and ensure the activity centre remains a practicable provision. In late 2022 FIN launched its fortnightly escorted shopping trips which proved so popular it now runs weekly: the Tuesday Lunch Club is also thriving. These services are solely run by volunteers and provide vital opportunities for those that attend. Likewise. FIN'S therapeutic sessions (seated exercise, seated ballet. massage. foot care and hairdressingl, remain very popular. These popular. sessional services are
the type of offering that FIN would like to build upon in the future. The 'community centre, space we occupy lends itself well to the establishment of a weekly schedule of activities and courses which would require prebooking and prepayment. Research and feedback from current members, their families/carers, the local community. social prescribers and other charitable organisations,. would help FIN in implementing a timetable of events of needed provisions in the EN4 and EN5 areas. FIN'S last annual report highlighted the need for all FIN'S IT systems to be updated. The charity's seNer was very old and unstable, and the computers were running operating systems that were no longer supported. Regular IT issues were severely hampering the Co-ordinator's day-to-day work, as well as exposing FIN to unauthorised access and data breaches. We are pleased to report that this has now been done. New hard drives have been acquired and all FIN data and email has been moved to a cloud-based system which enables remote working as well as securing FIN'S records. Likewise. FIN has implemented a new accountancy system which enobles the organisation to manage and track5 Its finances more efficiently. The staff for 2023 - 2024 is unchanged from the previous year and they are thanked for their continued hard work: Rebecca Dickinson Maria Drury Hannah Giritharan Julie Gubby Salih Hassan Geetha Katuwawala Catherine Lloyd Charity Co-ordinator Visiting Assistant Activity Centre Assistant Driver & Visiting Assistant Transport Co-ordinator Senior Activity Centre Organiser Activity Centre Assistant
Flnancial Revlew FIN has legacy monies in reserve which provide a healthy-looking balance sheet. however the charity is once again posting a substantial operating loss of £33.659. Though the charity is indeed fortunate in that it has such monies in reserve, as the result of legacies bequeathed to it. FIN does not wish to be 'surviving' on this money as it should be used to grow and improve its services, rather than plugging an annual deficit. Therefore, the Board of Trustees will be considering internal restructuring, further grant applications and more innovative fundraising activities. Reserves Pollcy FIN will also be looking at ways at making its reserve funds 'work' harder for the charity through some low-risk investment opportunity.
