The Bridge to Cross Charitable Trust Reg. Charity 1090166 Annual Report for 2022–2023

In presenting this report, the Trustees are aware of the requirement that the charity’s activities should be for the public benefit. They are satisfied that the activities, available through the Centre, including the provision of work-experience placements, meet this requirement. They also always seek to ensure that volunteers and staff are able to take advantage of suitable training opportunities.

Core activities

The resources of the charity are specifically directed to maintaining and developing the 7Corners Centre*, the Hot Spot Outreach, and various other outreach activities in Abergavenny.

The Bridge to Cross Charitable Trust Reg. Charity 1090166 Annual Report for 2022–2023

Finance

We have continued to receive generous support from the many individual donors in the local community, who support the charity through regular giving. We have also continued to receive financial support through Donor Grants, Gwent High Sheriff’s Fund, and the Local Authority. Since Covid 19 it has become more difficult to obtain these Grants, but we have been successful due to the efforts of our Administrator.

We finally received our corporate credit card in June 2022 for ease of purchasing goods and services. This has been successfully used since that date. Usage has been monitored and analyzed by the Treasurer, and included in his reports.

Trustees

The Bridge to Cross Charitable Trust Chair continues to be Peter Nuttall, ably supported by Alison Stroud as Deputy Chair, Alan Freebury as Treasurer, Michael Marsden as Secretary, and all the other actively supporting Trustees, including Sandy Greenslade, Mary Kennedy, Dr. Huw Morgan, Caroline Woollard, and Andrew Willie. Nick Pryor of the Salvation Army has continued to provide much appreciated support and advice as Chaplin, sadly, will be moving to greener pastures in July 2023.

A Resolution has been passed by the Trustees to alter the charities Governing Document with regards an increase in the number of Trustees. This proposed change has been forwarded to the Charity Commission.

Payments to trustees

There were no payments to Trustees during the year.

Employees

Mrs Julie Sussex continues, efficiently and effectively, to support us in the role of Administrator, giving excellent backing to the Centre Manager, Chair, and Treasurer. Her efforts have continued to ensure we have obtained financial support from a variety of donors in these current hard times. We are also extremely grateful that she continues to volunteer for some of the activities of the Centre

The Bridge to Cross Charitable Trust Reg. Charity 1090166 Annual Report for 2022–2023

Ange Sampson continues to manage all aspects of the Centre, Hot Spot Outreach, and various other activities with her customary sensitive care and dedication. The negative effects of Covid 19 shut down’s have made her close work with the young people particularly challenging in these last 12 months.

Volunteers

We continue to be extremely grateful to all our volunteers and helpers who have supported Ange in the various outreach activities and at the Centre.

Patron

Our long standing Patron, Andrew Tuggey, the Vice-Lord Lieutenant for Gwent, due to his appointment as High Sheriff, has stepped down after many years providing active support and advice at our Trustees’ meetings. His dedication and commitment to the Bridge to Cross Charity have been most welcome and appreciated, and we wish him well in his new role.

We also welcome our new Patron, Dame Claire Clancy, Deputy-Lord Lieutenant of Gwent, who succeeds him. Dame Claire has visited the Centre and attended our Trustee Meetings, with the same enthusiasm as her predecessor.

Data protection

The Centre does not retain information about casual Centre users. Appropriate data is retained for employees, volunteers and gift-aid donors in accordance with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulations.

Conclusion

Despite the continued turbulent times we live in, the charity has continued to fulfil its role, albeit in different ways, in providing a safe place where young people can gather in safety, receive support and guidance and, as opportunity offers, be encouraged to develop life and practical skills.
