EBA Chair Annual Reportfor 2020
We be8an the New Year with planning for our contribution to the Thlnk Human Festival, at
Oxford Brookes University from the I, to 14 February. There was an exhibition of material
from the Paul Oliver Collection on display boards and two trustees (Dr Christian O'connell
and Mlchael Roach) participated in a tslk about Paul Oliver 'Discoverin8 the Blues, to an
audlence in one of the lecture theatres. The event was well attended and there wa5 talk of
putting on more events in collaboration with Brookes.
In partnershlp with Oxford 8rookes University, an appllcation for a grant was submltted to
the National Archives to hire a full time person for one year to fully catslo8ue the collettion.
Our application was unsuccessful in 2019 but we were encoura8ed to apply a8ain. This time
around, we were granted the award for £36,786 on 21 July 2020. In addltion to the
digitizin& we will be hawng a 'Blues in the Sdiools, outreach pro8ramme of activities
whereby we will be takln8 items from the collection and sharin8 it with primary and
secondary schools. Unfortunately, Covid restrictions stopped this from happening.
Wlth the Covld lockdowns startin8 in March, it was deoded that we should focus on
technology and do everythln8 online. We contacted 'AII You Need Is Ears. and paid them
£5,405.93 for digitizing every reel to reel tape recordin8 housed at Oxford Brookes so we
can make It accessible to the general public
Dr Dai Griffiths, our board representstive from Oxford Brookes Universlty, retlred from hls
posltlon at Brookes in May and subsequendy resigned as a trustee of the EBA. We thanked
him for hls invaluable contribution in liaising with the University and he has identified a
suitable replacement to continue our dose relationship. It is with sadness that I have to
report the passing of trustee Marion Miller in September. She wa5 an enthusiastic supporter
of all thin8s blues related and will be mi$5ed by the many fans of her radio shows. She was
artive member of the board with a vast knowled8e of blues music and its history.
