Annual Report:

The twenty-third annual report covers the year from 6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025. Regular donations currently enable BSCT to fund just 7 hours per week on a permanent basis, as some long-term church sponsorship was withdrawn in 2024. BSCT has now adopted a strategy of spending unrestricted reserves to support additional staff hours.

Whilst our regular committed income has decreased again this year, the demand for the Trust’s work has increased considerably over the last few years, and especially since COVID in 2020, as reported in previous annual reports. After a protracted application process, BSCT secured funding from the Ann Watson Trust, who kindly agreed to fund 16 hours emotional wellbeing work each week, in both Primary and Secondary phases, for 3 years from September 2024. That has enabled Cathy Beynon, BSCT’s long-serving Primary School Co-ordinator, to take up work within the pastoral team at Beverley Secondary Schools.

BSCT has also been able to advertise for a new part-time Primary role to sustain the lunchtime clubs that the trust has run over many years. Though that appointment was unavoidably delayed, in February we appointed a Schools Support Worker on a fixed term contract for Summer Term 2025. Cathy has continued to oversee the Primary School work of her new colleague.

Cathy is still undertaking ongoing counselling courses for various age groups, conveniently taking her work placements in local schools. The trustees have ensured she has clinical supervision for her new wellbeing work and there has also been some bereavement support work. Our perception is that the Beverley Secondary Schools have become more open to working with BSCT in recent years and it is pleasing that we can now better fulfil some of that expectation, working with more Secondary students, as used to be the case when the trust was founded in 2001.

There are now only a handful of BSCT volunteers, and the trustees are well aware that more are needed, so local churches have been approached and encouraged to recruit potential volunteers for the Primary lunch clubs. Recruitment has, despite all such local efforts, become increasingly difficult.

The annual summer transition programme of lessons and assemblies - linking Primary and Secondary Schools across the Beverley catchment - has continued, and all local schools are offered the opportunity of such input if they choose, together with the promise of an It’s Your Move book (Scripture Union) for every student. BSCT remains a Scripture Union associated trust and is thereby able to access help and support from SU staff.

BSCT regularly reports to Churches Together Beverley (CTB) meetings, ensuring that our work remains recognised as an important part of the Christian work in the town. Workers and trustees are sometimes invited to make presentations and update church communities on our work with local young people, but we are aware that we’ll need to do much more organised promotion in order to enlist more voluntary support.

The Chair acknowledges again with gratitude, the ongoing collaboration and commitment of her fellow trustees over the past year, and the invaluable work of our Finance Officer, Julia Peplow and independent examiner of accounts, Mr Volodymyr Malyshev.
