li¢f of hardship among nws¢5 and other allied healthvcare professionals. The Junius S. Morgan Benevolent Fund
mak¢5 charitable grdnts to members of the nursing pmfession who ar¢ in haTd5hip for a variety of reasons. Since its
incepiion, th¢ Fund rnJd¢ th¢)usands of small grants to nursA fornittnrn and ttursing 2uxiliari¢y. Burd¢tt Twst
and Junius S. Morgan Benevol¢nt Fund have worked in close partsiership formany year4 sharing their history as well as
their strong commitsnent to th¢ nursing w(ykfo￿c. charities were named after fowiders of the Royal National
Pension Fund for Nur5e5. The Fund t5 a lifeline to many nurses in hardship and never h&$ thi5 been more important than
during the ¢oronavirns pandemic when Burdett'S tAlditional enabled the Fund to in¢rtw its rea¢h to support
even more nurses in need.

offering an online application foTm and 'fa5t-tsack' decision makin& with m￿t applic￿lon$ pr(*essed in less than four
weeks. In previous yeaT& ihe programme mad¢ grants of up to £8.000 I￿( in 2020. tn recognition of the ¢hallenges faced
by nurstng charities as a result of the ￿MIernIG the trn#ees raised this to £lO.fKM).

Burdett Trust aims to be a catatyst for change an activ¢ player in improvin8 the health and well-being of
patients. In addition to making grdnts tn reS￿)nSe to fimding applications. the Trust 'protx¢ively' seeks out
ways of engaging with nursing stskeholders and invites proposa15 to further its long-terni plans. The Trustees
participate in dialogue and share n¢w idw with nursin8 organisation& service providers and other ￿nd<rS and
engage in collaborative problem-solving and project development. All proactive grants are iniliated by the
Trust. Unsolicited applications are not accepted within this programme.
In 2020, the Trustees supp)rted eleven or8anisations proactively with ￿ tot&llin8 £1.022.180 in furtherance
of the Trust's charitsble objectives.
Barls Healih NHS Tr￿1
A grant of £30,000 was awarded for a study into the health and social Imp￿1 of the COV1D-19 pandemic
on the nursing workforce in the UK. It is widety accepted that the NHS workforce is already under
significant pressure with around one-third of nurses being eligible for retiremeDt in the n¢xt t¢n-years. high
attrition. and over 40.000 current NHS vacancies. The funded S￿dY will provide real-time inforniation

programme invited nurse-led proposals for evidence-based strategies and interventions which could

for nurse's mental health and psychological wellbein& b)th in the immediate and long terni. The Trust
recognises that nursing is part of a workforce team and evidence submitted as part of grant proposals WAS

2020 was to be the pinnacle year forNursingNow il marked the 2(Mlth anniversary of FlorenceNi8htin8ale's

tremendou5 energy as Nursing Now rea¢h¢d out to all heads of state to stress the imw)rtance of investing in and
supportin8 nurses and midwives on a global scale to achieve health for all. In the early months of 2020 regional
meetings were held in Ugand4 Fiji and the Bahamas but on I l March 2020 Covid-19 was declar￿ a pandemic
by WHO. Nursing Now rose to the unprecedented challenges facilitatin8 the global sharing of experience and

During the year, the Trustees Continu￿ to monilor and Teview all grants, with the aim of establishing their
impa¢t on the nursing ¢tintribution to h¢althcaTe. Periodically. the T￿Ste¢S me¢t to consideT the overall impact
of their grant-making programmes and make 5trate8i¢ plans. In addition, when ￿$sible the Chief Executive
organises seminars and workshops to share and disseminat¢ gocKI practice resulting from the Trust's grant
programmes. This was not POS5ible in 2020 due lo the global pandemi¢. but the Chief Executive kept in touch
with grnnt recipients through virtual meetings to ertsu￿ that grants were on track to deliver their intended
outcomes.
The Trustees are pleased to report once again thts year that grant r￿1P1¢￿ts 5￿CesSfUllY achieved the outputs
and outcomes they set out to deliver and any shortcomings W¢TC expliable and defensible. All grant recipients

FUTURE PLANS
Th¢ Truste¢s' key objective is to use its funds to emp)wer nurses and through thi5. to make signifiwil

support projects that are nurse-led and focused on the nursing contribution to healthcare. In addition. the
Trnste¢s will continue to suptK)rt nUTS¢S through targeted grant prowmes, their f&8t-tr￿k small 8rants
they will use their experience and networks to make fill1her'proactive' grants, all d¢signed to make significant
long-term improvements to the patient-care environment. They will continue to monitor the perfonnanc¢ of
their fvnding p8rlneTS and grant rKipi¢nts to ensure that their funds aTe bein8 used for maximwn b¢n¢fit in
furtherance of th¢ir charitsble aims and objectives.
The Trustees look forward to rcvisitin8 the strategic events and projects originally planned for2020 to celebrdts
the bi¢ent¢nary of Floren¢¢ Nightin8al¢'s birth and the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. The Florence
Nightingale Ch¢ls¢a Flower Show garden, planned for 2020 8nd sw)nsored by Burdett Trnsi will k Carried
