Financial review
As described above. the team al The Cancer Support Cenlre explored many sources of income during
the year with significanl results.
An increase in expenditure on fundraising of £26,645 (£32,985 in 2024125 compared to £6,340 in
20231241 has resulted in the amount received in grants rising from £27,000 in 2024125 to £58,190 in
2024125, the amounl achieved from fundraising events rise from £27,497 in 2023124 to £42,838 in
2024125 and the amount raised by our supporters rise from £26,151 in 2023124 to £63,851 in 2024125.
However, the latter amount does include just over £25,000 from a one-off event which we will not
benefit from in the coming years.
Income frorn donations also rose substantially from £33,220 in 2023124 to £53,047 in 2024125.
The only other significant increase in expenditure was in the area of staff costs driven by the increased
cost of additional hours which were required to ensure office coverage at all times when needed. The
remaining difference be￿een unrestricted expenditure in 2023124 and 2024125 is due to the different
ways in which premises costs have been funded in the two years.
Overall, it is gratifying to report that after 3 years of recording significant deficits which have eaten into
the Centre's reserves, the surplus achieved in 2024125 has gone some way to redressing thosa
balances.
Plans for future perlod8
ASMS and key objectlves for future perlods
Our plans to return to operating 5 days a week and to extend hours after the working day are
progressing well, and we have received grant fundlng to cover the increased costs of this. This will be
fully operational in 2025.
Our continued use of social media and working with local Health Organisations is key to being able to
grow our client base and this continues to be a priority for us.
We continue to establish new partnerships wlth othar charities or groups, which help us to provide
additional seprfices for our clients.
Our development of funding sources is a key 8Ctivity in the coming years to ensure that we are able to
rise to the challenge of malching funding io dem8nd and this is a key focus for the Board of Truslees.
Our on-line self help capabilily contlnues to grow, and further additions to this lo enable it to be used by
clients who are unable lo visit us will be 8 key focus in the next 1-2 years.

Growth
Cancer Research UK anticipate around 570 new cases diagnosed per year for the population of Sutton
Coldfield Constituency and around 6600 new cancer diagnoses per year for the entire population of
Birmingham.
The Cancer Support Centre will continue to find ways to reach new clients so Ihey are aware of our
service, and we will continue to be there for existing clients.
Funds held as custodlan trustee
Pollcy on reserves
The Trustees are currently reviewing thelr policy on reserves and investments as despite a significant
increase in income during 2024125 the reserves fall short of the ststed strategy to hold reserves equal
to 9 months of operational expenditure.
In addition holding this level of reseNes can deter funders but we still need to raise funds each year as
it is desirable to meet annual expenditure from annual income.
The Trustees will carefully examin8 the impact of changing their reserves policy in the coming year.

Tangible assels (¢ontlnued)
An increase in the carrying amount of an asset as a result of a revaluation, is recognised in other
recogni5ed gains and losses, unless it reverses a charge for impairment that has previously been
recognised as expenditure within the statement of financial activities. A decrease in the carrying
amount of an asset as a result of revaluation. is recognised in other recognised gains and losses,
except to which il offsets any previous revaluation gain, in which ease the loss is shown'within
other recognised gains and losses on the statement of financial activities.
Depre¢iatlon
Depreciats'on is calculated so as to write off the cost or valuation of an asset, less its residual
value, over the useful economic lrfe of that asset as follows..
Short leasehold propety
Equipment
9 years straight line
250/0 reducing balance
Impairment of fixed assets
A review for indicators of Impairment Is carried out at each reporting dale, with the recoverable
amount being estimated where such indicators exist. Where the carrying value exceeds the
recoverable amount, the asset is impaired accordingly. Prior impairments are also revIev￿d for
possible reversal at each reporting date.
For the purposes of impairment testing, when it is not possible lo estimate the recoverable
amount of an indivldual asset, an estimate is made of the recoverable amount of the cash-
generating unit to which the asset belongs. The cash-generating unit is the smallest identifiable
group of assets that includes the asset and generates cash inflows that largely independent of the
cash inflows from other assets or groups of assels.
For impairment testing of goodwill. the goodwill acquired in a business combination is, from the

Accounting policies (contlnued)
Financial inslruments (contlnu•d)
Where investments in shares are publicly traded or their fair value can otherwise be measured
reliably, the investment is subsequently measured at fair value with changes in fair value
recognised in income and expenditure. All other such investments are subsequently measured at
cost less impairment.
Other financial instruments, including derivatives. are inits'ally recognised at fair value, unless
payment for an asset is deferred beyond normal business lerms or financed at a rate of interest
that is not a market rate, in which case the asset is measured at the present value of the future
paymenls discounted at a market rate of interest for a similar debt instrumenl.
Other financial instruments are subsequently measured at fair value, with any changes
recognised in Ihe slatement of financial activities, with the exception of hedging instruments in a
designated hedging relationship,
Financial assets that are measured at cost or amortised cost are reviewed for objective evidence
of impairment al the end of each reporting dale. If there is objective evidence of impairment, an
mpalrment loss is recognised under the appropriate h8adlng in Ihe statement of financial
activities In which the initial gain was recognised.
For all equity instruments regardless of significance, and other financial assets that are
individually significant, these are assessed individually for impairment. Other financial assels are
either assessed individually or grouped on the basis of similar credit risk characteristics.
Any reversals of impairment are recognised immediately, to the extent that the reversal does not
result in a carrwng amount of the financial asset that exceeds what the carrying amount would
have been had the impairment nol previously been recognised.
Deflned contrlbutlon plans
Contributions to defined contribution plans are recognised as an expense in the period in which
the relalecl service is provided. Prepaid contributions are recognised as an asset lo the extent
thal the prepayment will lead to a reduction in future payments or a cash refund.
When contributions are not expected to be settled wholly within 12 months of the end of the
reporting date in which the employees render the related service, the liability is measured on a
discounted present value basis. The unwinding of the discount is recognised as an expense in
the period in which it arises.
Llmlted by guarantee
The charity is limited by guarantee, incorporated in England and Wales, and consequently does
not have share capital. Each of the trustees is liable to contribute an amount not exceeding £1
towards the assets of the charity in the event of liquidation.
