PCFCD AGM ANNUAL REPORT 2024 / 2025

PCFCD provide invaluable support to the teaching and study of the Religious Education Agreed Syllabus and to the OFSTED priority given to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural dimension: a judgement contributing to the overall effectiveness of schools. Experiencing diversity first hand allows children to encounter the reality of religion and culture as a way of life and the values that religions and traditions teach, thus enabling schools to address the statutory requirements of their agreed syllabus for Religious Education, through lively and creative learning. Our work also helps schools develop mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, a key aspect of British Values.

SCHOOLS STATS - 1ST APRIL 2024 TO 31ST MARCH 2025

During the last financial year (2024/2025) 61 schools accessed our services either on a subscription or pay-as-you-use basis.

We provided these schools with sessions and workshops covering a range of faiths, the most requested of which were Islam (67+hrs), Judaism (48+ hrs), Christianity (33+ hrs), Buddhism (18+ hrs) Humanism (10+ hrs), Baha’i (3+hrs) & Sikhism (1+hrs) and our cultural speakers brought alive the African (1 hr) and Chinese (11+ hrs) and Japanese (1 hr) cultures. We also provided ‘Diversity, Unity & Wisdom’, ‘HMD/Learning from Solly’ and ‘British Values’ workshops (totalling 21+ hrs). All these sessions were predominantly speaker-led, but some were delivered online when necessary.

We were also pleased to be able to offer visits to places of worship in the city and delivered 31 visits to Plymouth Synagogue (totalling 56hrs), 13 visits to PIETy Islamic Centre (totalling 13 hrs) and 5 visits to the Minster Church of St Andrew (totalling 5hrs).

In total, PCFCD received booking requests which equated to around 326 hrs of speaker time in the last financial year. This total includes requests for Hinduism sessions that equated to 38+ hours, however, we were unfortunately unable to fulfil these due to the lack of a Hindu speaker during this period.

The majority of schools have had face-to-face visiting speakers and visits to places of worship, however, there has been continued take-up of our offer to provide services online when needed and appropriate.

Trustees noted with thanks the contribution of the PCFCD staff in continuing to promote the work of the Centre under very difficult circumstances.

Below are a few examples of feedback following some of our online, in-person and Faith-Trail sessions:

Woodford Primary School

We would like to say what a pleasure it was to have Rania visit us on Tuesday to share with us places that are special to Muslims. She was really engaging and had a lovely manner with the children. The PowerPoint was really informative, and she made the session interactive by asking the children to join in with actions for washing rituals and repeating key phrases in Arabic. The children loved looking at the prayer mats. We will definitely be booking this again next year.

Devonport High School for Girls

"The "Diversity, Unity, and Wisdom" workshop, delivered by Jonathan, was excellent. It effectively highlighted the importance of interfaith and multicultural awareness, promoting dialogue and understanding based on values of respect and tolerance. The session was both informative and engaging, presented in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Overall, it was an inspiring and thought-provoking experience that left a lasting impact."

The feedback from our Y9 students was overwhelmingly positive, here are some of their comments:

"It was interesting, informative and delivered in really relaxed manner" What really stuck for me was the comment that about diversity, that it isn't our biggest strength, but togetherness is."

"It raised awareness and respect for all perspectives."

"I found it inspiring; it helped to develop my understanding of how to achieve unity I am curious to learn more."

"I enjoyed the talk, and it provided a wide range of viewpoints, and it was really interesting to hear about so many different communities and religions coming together here in my hometown of Plymouth."

ACE Schools

I just wanted to thank you for allowing us to visit your Synagogue yesterday. Jerry was brilliant and the kids really enjoyed it.

We all talked about the experience afterwards and were testing each other to try and remember some of the many facts we learnt!

Kings School

Good afternoon Jonathan,

I just wanted to say thank you for this morning's meeting. The children absolutely loved listening and interacting with you. To keep them all so engaged and hanging on your every word for an hour was wonderful to see.

We hope to see you again soon and thank you again!

Lady Modiford’s CofE Primary

Thank you very much for our trip to the Synagogue. We all learned so much (and my husband's Jewish!) from Jerry. It was a really valuable and enjoyable visit.

Woodfield Primary

We just wanted to pass on our thanks and say how brilliant the session we had at school this week with Rania Amin Osman and Mrs Sivasothy were. The children gained a lot from these sessions and thoroughly enjoyed them. They really liked the artefacts that were brought in and the way the visitors gave the information. Both were very patient with the children and answered all of their questions.

White Rock Primary School

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for organising Rania to speak to our year 5 children last week, and especially to you Sara for coming in on your day off to sort out the link! The children loved listening to her and asking questions.

St Andrew’s CofE Primary

I just wanted to say thank you to the lovely Deborah who came to visit my Year 1 class last Thursday. She was really lovely with the children and they all loved looking at the Jewish resources she brought with her. We took some photos on the day to put on our school website.

STAFFING

Jonathan Marshall continues to be available to provide advice and support for the Centre staff and Trustees. He also provided a number of services during his Plymouth visits: "Learning from Solly"; Buddhism, including meditation at exam level, "Diversity, Unity and Wisdom" - what can we do together and what can we do alone to help build a better world?

Sara Wells continued overseeing management of the office, administering school bookings, marketing our service to schools and increasing uptake in our services (reflected in the figures above). She also represents the Centre on SACRE and attends the annual LTLRE conference at St Mellion.

Rania Osman took up the position of Finance Officer in September 2024 and given some initial training by Yuki Yoshioka to get her settled into the role.

Trustees noted with thanks the contribution of Sara, Rania and Yuki in continuing to support and advance the work of the Centre.

FINANCE

Total Income for the year was £79,755.67

COMMUNITY RECOVERY FUND

Following unrest in Southport resulting in Plymouth city centre riots in August 2024, the UK government made finding available to all cities affected asking organisations whose work offered a solution to unrest in the community to bid for a portion of it. PCFCD was one of 5 educational organisations who were successful in their bid and granted £18, 288 towards specific work with schools (particularly those that don’t normally engage):

Piety and Synagogue visits

British Values Workshops for primary schools Jonathan’s "Diversity, Unity and Wisdom" workshops for secondary schools

DESTRUCTION OF PCFCD RESOURCES AT UTC

PCFCD compiled an insurance claim for the resources lost at UTC including The Little Library. Despite an absence of written logs or photographic evidence for the boxes being kept at UTC, Sara wells compiled details in order to submit a claim. On 5[th] November 2024, an email was received from the insurer to confirm that our claim was settled for £20,000 minus a policy excess of £100.

It should be noted that at the time the materials were destroyed, we were insured for £30,000. However, the insurers very much went on the date the incident was reported by which time we were planning to move the items to Marjon and downsize (unaware that it had all been disposed of!), hence reducing it to £20K. This issue was queried with the insurers and their response is below:

“The claim was settled on the basis of underinsurance for these artifacts and I feel it may be helpful to discuss this decision further with you, especially if you have any questions, to hopefully ensure that going forward, you have the remaining Contents under the policy, insured for their full replacement value. I can appreciate the difficulty in the valuing of artifacts, as it is not a simple matter of obtaining a straight purchase price for a replacement but perhaps we can have a talk to answer any questions you may have.”

It was decided to accept the settlement and draw a line under it.

Grants
Plymouth Community Recovery Fund £18,288
Community Grants £1625
Holocaust Memorial Day £3000
SACRE £3000
International Dinner February 2025 £120

Anonymous Donation £16,053.00 remaining at the end of 2023/24 financial year

As we now have a substantial amount of money through the Insurance pay-out and Community Recovery Fund, Sara Wells is looking to set up two savings accounts to keep the money away from our current accounts.

TRUSTEES

There were two alterations to the Board of Trustees. Mrs Anna Kelly retired and we were informed that Dr Judith Beckman would replace her a representative of the Jewish Community. Judith has been a long serving Faith Speaker and very familiar with he work of PCFCD. Also, Councillor Sue Dann stepped into other duties and was replaced by Councillor Tess Blight who has extensive experience in education and is the current Chair of SACRE.

The remaining members continued to serve: Councillor Sarah Allen, Miss Arezoo Farahzad, Mr Vallabhdas Meswania, Dr David Salter, Ms Rizwana Yusuf.

There is an ongoing urgent need for more hands-on trustees.

Jonathan Marshall offered a workshop training to trustees and Faith Speakers in June 2024 on “Exploring Diversity, Unity and Wisdom”.

SACRE

Tess Blight, David Salter, Arezoo Farahzad (Trustees) and Sara Wells (Staff) all served on SACRE during 2024 / 2025.

PCFCD was also given a SACRE grant for £3000 to deliver the following:

1. Procurement & Delivery of the 2025 SHAP Calendar of Religious Festivals for RE Leads in every Plymouth School - £800.00 (approx. £8.00 per school)

(Cost includes physical wall calendar, envelopes, delivery, printing of covering letter & flyers to accompany calendar & associated admin) Many schools have commented over the years that they miss receiving this – SACRE used to fund this being sent every year and it is a really useful resource for schools

  1. Training of New Faith Speakers - £1000.00 (Cost includes approx. 9hrs of training, trainer travel & prep, room hire for sessions, printing & admin costs & DBS checking) A wider pool of speakers will be of huge benefit to the schools and will also broaden the sessions we can offer schools

  2. School Speaker Sessions / Visits to Places of Worship x12 - £1200.00 (Cost includes 12x 1hour sessions) Either 1x Visit to PIETY Islamic Centre or Plymouth Synagogue, 1x Lessons from the Holocaust workshop or 1x Exploring Unity, Diversity & Wisdom workshop

TOTAL COST - £3000.00

COLLABORATION WITH PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY

Throughout the academic year 2023/2024 Arezoo Farahzad and David Salter contributed to aiding the work of the Pastoral Spiritual Support department of Plymouth university as Faith Advisors and members of the steering group.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY

In response to the year's theme " For A Better Future " Plymouth City Council and PCFCD hosted an event at the Council House Reception Room and at the Peace Garden on the Hoe on Tuesday 28[th] January 2025. This year marked two very distinct and tragic anniversaries:

Invited guests attended a one-hour commemoration programme at the Council House in the presence of The Lord Mayor, Deputy Leader of the Council and Deputy Lieutenant for Devon. An incredibly moving performance was offered by 6[th] Form students of Devonport High School for Boys who offered specially composed pieces of music in honour of the occasion.

Accounts on the theme were also shared by: Dr. Judith Beckman Jewish community Dr Joe Bard Jewish community Revered Osee Ntavuka Rwandan Community Frankie Baldry Young Poet Laureate Miss Arezoo Farahzad Disability groups / Bosnia DHSB Students Specially composed music Miss Arezoo Farahzad MC / PCFCD co-ordinator role Due to Storm Eowyn, the public commemoration in the Peace Garden had to be relocated to the The Council House at the last minute. Despite that, around 50 guests attended and enjoyed a reduced version of the Civic programme. A special note of thanks to Kevin McKenzie, the PCC support team and staff at the Lord Mayor’s Office for their time and help in coordinating the logistics working on the programme on behalf of Plymouth City Council.

Jonathan Marshall has been speaking to a representative of an organisation called Generation 2 Generation regarding talks by descendants of Holocaust survivors, similar to those offered by Solly Irving, with a view to including a contribution in future HMD commemorations and arrange school visits.

INTERFAITH WEEK 2024

The third PCFCD Interfaith Celebration was held on Tuesday 26[th] November 2023 in the Plymouth Council House Council Chamber. Guests attended to enjoy a harmonious programme on the theme of “Unity in Diversity” and BBC Spotlight news filmed a feature and interviews with some of the contributors. Performances and presentations included African storytelling, Bahá’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Indigenous American, Jew, Muslim, Quaker, Sikh, Sufi and Unitarian. Guests of honour included The Lord Mayor, Councillor Tina Tuohy, and Professor Vikram Deveraj DL on behalf of the Lord Lieutenant of Devon.

WEBSITE

The PCFCD website was mainly down during the 2024-2025 period due to the difficulty of aligning timetables between Neil Tancock (IT Support), Sara Well and Arezoo Farahzad.

In addition, an issue arose with our previous web hosts, Enthuse, who believed they were owed money despite clear email evidence that PCFCD had terminated their agreement. AF took over the discussions until the matter was resolved in September 2024.

MEDIA

Jonathan Marshall continues to write articles for RE Today whenever possible. He also wrote an HMD Saturday Thought article for The Herald.

BBC Spotlight made a wonderful report about the Interfaith Celebration at The Council House in November 2024 (as mentioned above under Interfaith Week)

Plymouth Centre for Faiths and Cultural Diversity

Independent Examiners Report to the Trustees of the Plymouth Centre for Faiths and Cultural Diversity Limited (limited by Guarantee) for the year ended 31 March 2025.

I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2025 that are set out on pages 4 to 7.

Respective Responsibilities of the Trustees and the Independent Examiner

The Charity's Trustees (who are also the Directors of the Company for the purposes of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The Charity's Trustees consider that the audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 ("The 2011 Act") and that an independent examination is needed.

Having satisfied myself that the trust is not subject to audit under Part 16 of the Companies Act 2006 and is eligible for independent examination, it is my reponsibility to examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act, to follow procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act, and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of Independent Examiner's Report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedure undertaken does not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independents Examiner's Statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

  1. which gives a reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006, and to prepare accounts which accord with accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Companies Act 2006 and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities (revised 2005) have not been met,

or

  1. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
