## **ST JOSEPH’S PLAYGROUP, HERTFORD**

## **TRUSTEES REPORT**

## **CHARITY NO: 1089180**

St Joseph’s Playgroup, which is Ofsted-registered, is based within the grounds of St Joseph’s RC School in Hertford. It offers pre-school education for children aged 2 to 4 year olds during term time Monday through Friday. Morning sessions are held from 9am to 12pm, specifically for 2-3 year olds. For children over 3, there is a lunch club available from 12pm to 1pm. Afternoon sessions, running from 12pm to 3pm, catering to Nursery children at St Joseph’s School. Children attending morning playgroup can also join the afternoon sessions once they turn 3, starting in the following term.

The Playgroup has an Admissions Policy in place which welcomes all children from the local area, prioritising those of Catholic faith and with siblings at St Joseph’s School. Our fees have risen this year in line with other similar settings within the area at £22.50 for a 3-hour session. We accept all 2 and 3 to 4 year old government funding including supported and working families and universal 15 hours, tax free childcare accounts, and childcare vouchers.

This year, another rise in the minimum wage significantly affected our wage bill, even though we lost a staff member. We raised our hourly fees to match other local playgroups, but fewer people paid fees, resulting in a loss. On the positive side, increased funding per child helped offset the higher hourly rates needed for staff supporting our children. Operational costs continued to climb, and we spent extra on repairing deteriorated outdoor areas, which added to our expenses. Despite these challenges, we are pleased to report that we finished the financial year with a surplus.

This year, the fundraising team raised essential funds with greater ease thanks to a new card machine. Events included fireworks canvases, cake sales, Christmas baubles, and raffles, concluding with celebrations of our 30th Anniversary annual fun Jelly Dash Day.

Funds went towards a new shed and storage, plus educational resources including books, dress up and play role items, books, and gardening equipment for the children.
