## **Annual Report of the Trustees of Sudbury Symphony Orchestra** ## **Year ended 31 August 2023** A charity registered in England with number 1089069 Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is an unincorporated association with registered address The Apple Lodge, Dynes Hall Road, Great Maplestead HalsteadCO9 2QS. The trustees of the charity are: Mr David Ellis (chairman) Ms Tanya Croall Ms Helen Moxey (treasurer) Ms Helen Blackmore Mr Duncan Young (secretary) Ms Sara Woodcock The trustees of the orchestra run the charity and their appointment is approved by the members of the charity. Trustees are generally appointed from members of the charity except in exceptional cases. The purpose of the charity is the “advancement of public education in the art and science of music through the rehearsal and performance of all types of music for orchestra in and around Sudbury, to the highest musical standards attainable by its performing Members who shall in the main be local amateur musicians”. The orchestra rehearses weekly up to 40 times per year and performs three concerts a year either in Sudbury itself or in nearby Lavenham. For the year to 31 August 2023 the orchestra performed two concerts in Lavenham Church and one in St Gregory’s Church, Sudbury. Historically the orchestra has performed in St Peter’s Church in Sudbury but this was closed in September 2021 for renovation works and did not re-open until late 2023. We estimate that at least 50 different local amateur musicians performed in these concerts and the audience numbers for the three concerts came to over 500 people. We performed the following works in the year: 2 July 2023: Soloist: Robert Spivey | Mozart Horn Concerto No. 3 | Délibes Le Roi S'Amuse | Fauré Pavane | Méhul Symphony No. 1 26 March 2023: Soloist: Philippa Barton | Holst Song of the Night | Elgar Salut d'Amour | Rossini Overture to Il Signor Bruschino | Holst Country Song from Two Songs without Words | Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4 27 November 27 2022: Soloist: Julia Raga Pascual | Mozart Clarinet Concerto | Dvorak Slavonic Dances Nos 3 and 4 | Dvorak Symphony No. 8 Financially the orchestra benefitted from a number of generous donations and legacies in the year such that its cash surplus for the year was £17,777 and this has left the orchestra in a strong position going forward with just over £24,000 in reserves. Gift aid of approximately £1,486 was received in the year relating to the previous year, £267 of gift aid relating to the current year has not yet been claimed. Expenses totalling £178 (last year £nil) relating to the subsequent year have been paid in the year. Taking all these items into account (and taking into account similar adjustments for the previous year) there would have been a surplus for the year of £16,558 (previous year: loss of £128) against the cash increase of £17,777 (previous year decrease of £5,305) shown above. - 3 There was a balance due from the production company of £4,183 at year end (2022: £4,759). Orchestra tax relief of £4,196 for the year to 31 August 2023 is due to the production company, last year £4,324. As of 31 August 2023 the production company had a bank balance of £310 (last year £597). - 4 We own 3 timpani, triangle, tambourine, wood block, snare drum and conductors stool, and a locally made item, the conductor's podium. Total cost £4,193. We also own music costing a total of £1,120 (2022: £913).
