Wingates Institute Annual Report 2021
Surprisingly enough the hall has not had lots of use this year! But we have still had plenty going on including several online events during lockdowns - some themed quizzes and a DIY Burns Night. Bridge and reading group have moved on line to keep these established groups going. In summer 2021 we restarted Highlights rural touring events with ‘Fifi La Mer’ (a French cabaret), followed by a lino cutting workshop and then by ‘Florence’ (a musical play about Florence Nightingale). These all had limited audiences to allow for the social distancing rules. The Highlights events are great for small rural halls like Wingates, as they bring quality shows that you would normally have to travel to a city to see. We have two more Highlights events coming up in the next few weeks, both of which are sold out.
Since then the use of the hall has slowly increased with carpet bowls, a summer book group event and various meetings. The reduced usage has allowed work on improving the hall to proceed without interruption. We now have a new path around to the back with motion sensor lighting. The floor has been sanded and varnished and a patio area behind the hall is underway. Sue Rollitt has tidied up some of the previously neglected areas of the garden.
One thing we are short of is committee members. It has been possible to run events this year as there has been fewer of them, but as things slowly get going again, 5 people from 3 households is not really going to be enough. Thanks must go to the committee, particularly Julie and Louise who have put a lot of work in keeping the administration going in the background and helping to keep on top of the requirements for Covid regulations. The Northumberland Village Halls Consortium were also very helpful in this respect with providing up to date information.
Financially the hall is in a healthy position. Our current balances stand at; current account £2838.87 and in the deposit account £33634.10. Without the covid grant money from Northumberland County council the hall would have made a very large loss this year. The committee have been advised by North Northumberland Village Hall Consortium about grants the hall would be in a very difficult financial position. When holding the Highlights events this Summer, we used the garden a lot more. We successfully applied for a Wingates Wind Farm Community Benefit grant, to add a patio to make more use of the garden. Income Our income from our fund raising events is a lot lower this year due to covid restrictions, we have also had very little room hire, and while we have hosted events online there is no revenue generated from this. The only fundraising events where Highlights events have all been run with reduced capacity, they made very small profits. Expenditure We continue to pay a lot of fixed hall expenses even if the hall is closed, or being used very little for example Insurance, Utilities, licences, and maintenance. Central heating oil price had been quite low this year, but a recent fill was a lot more. If we order at the same time as others from the local area the price can be much better, Margaret Cuthbert has been very good at securing good prices for us. Our Electricity costs have been very low due to an overpayment last year and a long term fixed contract which is coming to an end. We continue to have free broadband from Alncom. Our other expenses from this year have been path around the hall from Wind farm grant, from funds floor sanding and varnishing, free standing hand sanitizers, mobile bar and outside lighting.
