Structure, governance and management
Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer was formed in June 2000, constituted under a Trust Deed dated 4th February 2001 and was granted charitable status on 17th October 2001.
Trustees are appointed by the board of trustees. Additionally there is a management sub-committee that meets on a regular basis to implement policy and organise fund raising activities.
Achievements and performance
Purposes and Aims
Our charity's purposes as set out in the objects contained in the company's memorandum of association are to:
The objective of the Charity is to provide care treatment and other medical benefits for patients suffering breast cancer in the West Midlands.
The aim of the Charity is to raise awareness and much needed funds to help provide direct support and equipment for Breast Cancer patients in the West Midlands that goes above and beyond NHS means for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) and other local hospital.
Ensuring our work delivers our aims
We review our aims, objectives, and activities each year. This review looks at what we achieved and the outcomes of our work in the previous 12 months. The review looks at the success of each key activity and the benefits they have brought to the group of people we are set up to help. The review also helps us ensure our aim, objectives and activities remained focused on our stated purposes. We have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aim and objectives and in planning our future activities. The trustees consider how planned activities will contribute to the aims and objectives they have set.
The Focus of our Work
The focus of our work for the year continued to promote breast cancer awareness in our diverse community and to continue to raise funds for breast cancer patients and local hospitals in the West Midlands.
-
Continue and expand our Breast Cancer Choir for patients, Family and Friends
-
Setup support and sustain a network for breast cancer patients. Supported all third-party events (raising money on our behalf)
Who used and benefited from our service?
Our printed materials are available to the 13,842 women attending breast screening in the West Midlands and are given by the nursing staff at the QEHB Hospitals (Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Solihull Hospital and Good Hope Hospital) and The Women's Hospital on the Q.E. site to all men and women receiving a breast cancer diagnosis.

LFBC Choir
Set up Support Network.
With the support of our volunteers and successful fundraising we have been able to set up a choir for Breast Cancer Patients, this group is facilitated by a volunteer, a professional singing coach and itis over seen by Pop Voices. This group continues to meet on a weekly basis in term time in the evening for 2 hours and has been a huge success. This group is attended by breast cancer patients who have already been treated or newly been diagnosed with breast cancer.
This Choir has proved to be a huge success and continues to act as a much-needed support group where like-minded people can come together and forget all their worries for a couple of hours with the joy of singing and we will continue to find funding in 2022/23 so that this choir/ support group will continue. Highlight for the choir was being asked to sign at Birmingham Symphony Hall in July 2023 with 500 others from Pop voices.

Breast Mates Support Group
We started our own support group called Breast Mates Central in 2020. An support group via social media, who meet both online and face to face and we offer 1-2-1 support sessions with those who book in with our volunteers. All our volunteers are Breast Cancer survivors who can offer support, experience, and guidance to those newly diagnosed, those facing re-diagnosis and those who are isolating due to current treatments and medical guidelines. Currently we have over 600 members. Since Covid restrictions lifted, the zooms support groups are still now continuing but there are now 2 face -to-face meetings in garden centers and/or coffee shops twice a month operating on opposite sides of the city enabling those who can or are well enough to travel the chance to meet in person. With the zooms and face to face meeting we provide a weekly get together service.
The group organise, crafting sessions, cards, wreaths, cake decorations, cooking demonstrations and Look Good Feel Better sessions. Spiritual evenings, social evening get togethers, Christmas gatherings,
This service has been invaluable to the community.

Soft Services
After a survey, we realized that bra fittings were extremely important to those who had recently had a mastectomy. The correct fitting bra/prosthesis aided the patient's mental health and wellbeing. We decided to provide a home-fitting service under strict PPE conditions and adhering to medical guidelines during Covid and continue now restrictions are lifted. We offer ‘Bra-saries’ so that there is no cost to the patients. Each individual visit, measure, complete with new properly fitted bra/prosthesis cost £100. The feedback has been outstanding, proving that this is an essential service for supporting patient's mental health and wellbeing after a breast cancer diagnosis.
Since Covid restrictions have been lifted, we now offer a full hairdressing/wig service to those who request help. We currently use two hair treatment centers in Birmingham and have a good rapport with both teams.
It has become apparent that food parcels continue to be required due to the cost of living crisis/not working and shielding because of their treatment. Many single parents with no local family are suffering the most. As a charity we decided to embark on delivering substantial food parcels on a weekly basis to those in need (complying with medical guidelines regarding PPE and patients who were shielding) at no cost to the Breast Cancer patient.
We also set up our micro bursaries which Breast Cancer patients and/or survivors could apply for online via our website. The bursaries are in the form of either supermarket vouchers or paid directly to the provider and/or services.
Hug-in-a-bag scheme
Attending your first chemotherapy or radiotherapy session can be extremely daunting. Especially if you must attend alone. That's why we have created our ‘Hug-in-a-bag’ initiative. We wanted to create a useful, practical resource which would provide everything a patient might need during these aggressive, yet critically important treatments.
The bags contain ‘common sense’ items such as a water bottle, moisturiser and a good book. It also contains less ‘obvious items’ including a blanket (as the treatments can impact body temperature dramatically) and a dark nail varnish (to hide the discoloration that the treatments can trigger)

LFBC provides these bags free of charge to patients across the region; we provide them by application via the website and post out to patients and we have provided and continue to provide and stock of bags to 19 hospitals within our 70 radius, so that the Breast Care nurses can gift them to even more patients.
Up to August 2023 we have donated over 1500 bags at a cost to the charity of £40/45 each.

Breast Cancer Awareness in the City of Birmingham.
Since 2012 we have ‘decorated’ the River Statue in Victoria Square Birmingham (otherwise known as the Floozie in the Jacuzzi) with a giant bra, to promote Breast Cancer Awareness month starting on October 1**. October 2022 was our tenth year. During the previous years we have as always liaised with Birmingham City Council as to access. The River statue was lifted in October 2021 for refurbishment. We liaised with Birmingham City Council as to whether we could ‘decorate’ the statue in October 2022 and they pondered and declined due to ‘ unforeseen circumstances beyond our control and no support from the original contractors’. We contacted CPC Civils the contracting company and who have provided a two year warranty and they were very happy to support a local charity promoting awareness and offered at no cost, the man power and equipment (cherry picker) to enable the bra to be attached to the statue to promote breast cancer awareness in the city of Birmingham on the tenth year.
Birmingham City Council agreed and then withdrew their permission on the day of decorating and declined from any further correspondence on the matter.
The second city in England had no representation of Breast Cancer Awareness during the month of October 2022.

The Tulip Ball
In March 2022 we started the long haul to organise a fund-raising ball for October 2022 in collaboration with QEHB charity.
The aim was to offer 40 current breast cancer patients a fabulous day/evening of fashion and fun and raise funds as well. This was oversubscribed with ladies putting themselves forward and a ballot occurred allowing 40 ladies to be picked from the 92 nominations. These ladies were then sent to two shops who kindly donated their services to pick and try on evening gowns to be worn on the night, on the catwalk. 40 Make up/hairdressing 3 students arrived during the afternoon to pamper these ladies and ensure that their confidence levels were at their highest. By using students from one of our local city colleges we not only enabled them to be a focus for their 3° year thesis but empowered these students to recognise the current and after effects that breast cancer can bring to women’s hair/skin and confidence.
The ball, considering current fiscal climates was well attended with 290 guests enjoying a 3 course meal, music and a different fashion show. The total raised on the night was £17,602.25.
The ticket money was collected by QEHB Charity and once all the invoices for the evening were paid from the ticket monies that they held, the charity still owed QEHB Charity nearly four thousand pounds for invoices outstanding. Sadly, QEHB charity failed to promote the event to their database of over 5000 and four hospitals intranet until a week prior the event and bought no seats, nor provided any volunteer support, nor administrative support accept provide a portal to purchase seats/tables. It was therefore very disappointing that the ‘collaboration’ was not the alliance relationship we had hoped for.
It was a fantastic evening and everyone who attended spoke highly of the charity, naming the event as one of the best they had gone too, especially incorporating a confidence boosting fashion show for our BC ladies.

However, once the £3,900 had been repaid to QEHB charity the total raised was broken down respectively. A donation on the night of £5,000 was given by one guest to specifically send one BC fashion model (aged 32 with secondaries) to Euro Disney with her child as a memory building holiday.
Therefore the remaining £8,500 raised on the night did not justify 6 months of hard organisational work, time, commitment and worry and it was decided by the board that we would not organise another fundraising ball unless it was totally sponsored by corporates.
Third Party Events
We were very lucky to be chosen as the beneficiary charity of several third-party events during the accounting period of 2022/2023 and we hosted our own ‘smaller’ fundraiser of 80 guests in March 2023, which raised £4,000.
Our Future Plans
Fundraising efforts by others is slowly moving forward, but it is still not as it was in years gone by. Along with rising utility prices and the cost-of-living crisis, people are still reluctant to give to charities. Without our interim Covid grants from the National Lottery, ours as with other charities would have had to cease.
We aim to reach out to more hospitals within the 70-mile radius of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham as stated in our Memorandum and Articles and expand our hug-in-a-bag scheme to as many hospitals within this area. For 2022/2023 we aimed to reach out to 20 hospitals, but have achieved 19. Not only supplying them with our bags, but also our literature on our support group Breast Mates Central that provides support to all those with a breast cancer diagnosis on a daily basis.
The main objective for Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer has always been to raise awareness of breast cancer in the West Midlands and to make sure people know what the signs are they need to be looking out for. We are also determined to promote awareness in all our diverse and ethnic communities. Also, if they are called up for a mammogram appointment, we make sure that they fully understand the importance of attending their appointments as early detection saves lives.
Corporate sponsorship and grant funding continue to be difficult to obtain but we preserve and apply for all when we can. Sadly, we have received no corporate sponsorship during the accounting period of 2022/2023. We are now actively looking for further assistance with funding from the National Lottery for LFBC to continue to support Breast Cancer patients in the Midlands in the future as we now cannot solely rely on the past generosity of public donations in the future, plus the uncertainty of the cost-of-living crisis has had a remarked effect on people’s lives worldwide and their thoughts about charity donations.
LFBC in common with many other responsible and hardworking charities has seen a significant fall in its support and its financial contributions and donations in the last few years.
We will endeavour to survive, to provide support to our local community, to make a difference.

3. Accounting policies (continued)
Incoming resources
All income is included in the statement of financial activities when entitlement has passed to the charity, itis probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the charity and the amount can be reliably measured. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income:
-
income from donations is recognised when there is evidence of entitlement to the gift, receipt is probable and its amount can be measured reliably.
-
legacy income is recognised when receipt is probable and entitlement is established.
-
income from contracts for the supply of services is recognised with the delivery of the contracted service. This is classified as unrestricted funds unless there is a contractual requirement for it to be spent on a particular purpose and returned if unspent, in which case it may be regarded as restricted.

3. Accounting policies (continued)
Impairment of fixed assets
A review for indicators of impairment is carried out at each reporting date, with the recoverable amount being estimated where such indicators exist. Where t e carrying value exceeds the recoverable amount, the asset is impaired accordingly. Prior impairments are also reviewed for possible reversal at each reporting date.
For the purposes of impairment testing, when it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an individual asset, an estimate is made of the recoverable amount of the cash- generating unit to which the asset belongs. The cash-generating unit is the smallest identifiable group of assets that includes the asset and generates cash inflows that largely independent of the cash inflows from other assets or groups of assets.
For impairment testing of goodwill, the goodwill acquired in a business combination is, from the acquisition date, allocated to each of the cash-generating units that are expected to benefit from the synergies of the combination, irrespective of whether other assets or liabilities of the charity are assigned to those units.
Stocks
Stocks are measured at the lower of cost and estimated selling price less costs to complete and sell. Cost includes all costs of purchase, costs of conversion and other costs incurred in bringing the stock to its present location and condition.
