Objectives and activities
The objects of the Charity is to fosler and promote the arts in society for the benefit of the general publi
in the United Kingdom but in particular the North-Easl of England by developing public appreciation of
the arts and by Improvlng public access to the arts and the quality of the arts, The Trustees have paid
due regard lo guidance issued by the Charity Commission including that regarding public benefit in
deciding what aGtivilies the Charity should undertake.

Achievements and performance
Although challenges around Covid 19 have moved on, there has been a knock on effect for in person
concerts. Combined with the effects of Brexit on artists touring from outside the UK and the cost of
living crisis
this has had an effect on audience numbers for in person Concerts. Though we have
regained around 80-90D/o of pre-covid audience figures across the progr8mme, the booking habits of
audiences are 18ss predictable, and current affairs have the potential to aff8Ct habits further. Th@
general effect on the programming and sales isn't worrying due to the planning and balance - however
the trustees and Directors will continue to monitor sales, artists and audiences throughout the years
ahead,
mitigating
risk
and balancing
artistic
outputs
where
possible.
Northern Roots has continued to lead a focused fundraising campaign to support our outreach and
development work with Artists from the Global Majority in the North East. Vve have maintained a
consistent Jumpin, Hot Club IJHC) programme with a minimised risk through stripped back
programming, working closely with venues and artists, and a focused marketing campaign.

Development
Through a period of significant Governance developmenl. Northern Roots has moved lo support anol
represent P8opI8 from th8 communities we s8rve through our participation and outreach programme.
Ensuring voices are heard and work is rigorous and challenged. Over Ihe Coming months, trustees will
be supported through training and development, and all trustees will work together to ensure the
organisalion is working well across all programmes and staff are being supported effeGtively.

Outreach
Kema Kay and Kay Greyson continue to lead on the participation and outrèach programmè for Northern
Rools
working with Adam Collerton and Leila d'Aronville to design, fundraise and support
programmes which supporl young Global Majority Artists from Ihe North East to explore creative
careers.
We continue to be aware that the infrastructure to support Global Majority Musicians and Artists in the
North East is lacking investment and generational knowledge. Working with artists. partners,
institutions. funders and authorities
North8rn Roots is aiming lo lobby and advocate for morè
investment into Global Majority Artists in the region. This included through our direct programming,
leadership development across our leadership team and governance structure. and also through
working in partnership to ensure Global Majority Artists are platformed and programmed in different
spaces
across
region
We are currently runnlng weekly sesslons for young people at Only Grlnd and forlnlghtly sesslons at
Loft Studios. Only Grind is operatéd by Rob Rez who alongside K8ma Sikazwe supports young peoplè
at these sessions. Only Grind is an ideal studio for young people starting out on their journey. Loft
studio is a professional recording studio and is suitable for more established artists and those who have
allended a number of sessions at Only Grind therefore developing a level of progression for artists
ou r
programme.
We have held showcase concerts at Hoochie Coochie which is an ideal venue for both new and more
established artists lo perfoitn. We are also working wilh different Venues and promoters to establish
additional
plalforming
Sunderland
and
across
Newcastle.
We have also supported artist Mcxxne lo form a partnership wilh Northern Baby which is a music
promotion agency. This has enabled Mcxxne to have her work promoted internationally attracting an
excellent response from outlets. Mcxxne has also been supported to successfully apply for a NextGen
grant from Youth Music and to take part in a First Notes project with Generator.
In addition w8 recognised the development n8eds of our18ad Artists - Kema Kay and Kay Greyson. Wé
continue to work with both Kema and Kay to develop programmes of work inside Northern Roots and
outside. Supporting with mentoring, networking and showcasing, and platforming their leadership in
different
spaGes
including
connecting them
to
institutions
and funders.
A significanl amount of work has been carried out by the fundraising team - Leila d'Aronville and Adam
Collerton, wlth addlllonal support from Hannah Matterson and Davld O'malley. Looklng at the balance
between core funding and project funding, reviewing and strengthening financial reporting processes
and developing a robust fundraising strategy. This has enabled Northern Roots to secure additional
core funding from Lloyds which has been transformative to the suslainability of Northern Roots, as
well a5 long lertn continued 5UPPOtt from the Comfflunity FoL4ndation and the NeW￿511e Investment
Northem Roots has also secured project funding for 3 years from Youth Music, which will continue to
see the core programme of support for young musicians grow and develop - with a focus on young
artists
from
the
Global
Majority.

The funding environment is challenging for all organisations. but the work that is happening across all
programmes is strong and the trust and respect in the community is also a clear testamenl to the
positive work that is happening.
Hot
Programming
Jumpin. Hot Club (JHC) programme was predominanlly looking lo maintain audiences in their usual
venues, Cluny, The Globe & Gosforth Civic Theatre in 2023 after lockdown & move things along. In fact
for first half of the year , we still had bookings that were cancelled during the lockdown American
artists such as Mike & The Moon pies , Diana Jones, Jason Ringenberg & Chuck Prophet & The
Mission Express were all very well allended shows, considering they were much changed dates, as the
original contracts were issued before the pandemic began & they were just getting back to touring UK &
Europe. We also had old - time bluesman Guy Davis , who last played around 25 years earlier & Gospel
trio Kyshona trio over from Nashville USA. The latter we co-promoled with Northem Roots. Slim
Chance played Cluny2 to a sold out audience that brought many older attendees back to a first Jumpin
post
pandemic.
Summer 2023 we had our 10th anniversary Country Cantina Festival @ Easington, Co Durham. We
had a high quality mix of local, national & a couple American artists. From a classic country outh't to an
all- girl Bluegrass oulfit. Cajun 4 piece to some soulful singer-songwriters. The Festival sold out
We also had a thr88 way Gem Arts, Jazz NE and Northern Roots Cluny2 show in July as part of Gem
Arls Festival with Michael Messa's Vilra. That altracted quite diverse & not our usual audience.
In the autumn as well as having the famous John Prine's son Tommy Prine Joshua Ray Walker
{booked pre pandemic) Canada's Th2 Sadies & a first ever UK visit from Austin Texas, The Old 97's to
Th8 Cluny. We tri8d out Th8 Comrnon Room near Central Station for a double bill with songwriter's
Kathryn Williams & Polly Paulusma. The Hall was full but marketing from the venue was absolutely nil.
We w8re also back at Gosforth Civic Theatre for the visit of indie folk musician D8von Sproule & a bil of
nostalgia with bluesman Calfish Keith. This was not only because Catfish has been a regular Jumpin
Hot Club visitor over the past few decades, but it was also part of our book launch!
In the early part of 2023 we pulled everything together and in the autumn self -released a book on
'The History Of The Jumpin Hot Club written by Graham Anderson, on a life devoted to music & a
definitive guide to all our Jumpin Hot Club exploits. Promoting roots music for over 38 years starting in
1986, it is crammed with mèméntoes & m&mori8s, n8WS Stories, reviews & of course photographs. The
book has nearly sold out of its first run of 300 copies. Reeders of the book have given excellent
feedback and as an organisalion we are looking at a second print run, and how we can consolidate the
slories
inlo
exhibition
of
the
work
for
the
40th
anniversary-
Onto 2024 and audiences have picked up and have settled down again with all our venues & we have
had highlight shows from Sam Baker @ Cluny2, Jefferey Martin@ The Globe. Ashley CampbelllThor
Jens8n @ Cluny2 & the Aurora String Quartel IBridi8 Jacksonlshipcole @ Cluny2
Future plans include some shows back at Lillle Theatre in Gateshead & also The Central, Gateshead.
In early 2024 we transferred a new domain name "jumpinhot Club" to our website for first time in twenty
years & set up a bi-year renewal. It makes the website much more secure, as Ihe old domain was held
in USA and quite unreliable. It's also possible to still use the old domain for 6 month, until we phase it
out.
Funding
The funding landscape has continued to be challenging with many trusts and foundations needing to
support 51atutory services. however we have managed to work with an external fundraiser and utilise
inhouse fundraising ski115 to Continue t0 secure core funding. We have a150 continued lo develop an
internal fundraising strategy which is developing longer term funding and core funding so we can
continue to have longer term relationships with our participants and artists.
Financial review
It is the charities policy that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should
be maintained at the level equivalent to between three months expenditure. Due lo the changes in
funding sources and the timing of receipts It has not always been possible to adhere to this policy whilst

pursuing the charities aims and objectives. Part of the focus of the last years fundraising and financial
planning has been lo secure funds lo run longer and more sustained programmes
which includes
funding to build up a reserves amount amounting to 3 months of core expenditure. We have conlinued
to review core cosls and have conlinued to work from home as an organisalion. We have ensured we
hav8 revi8wed core spending outside of salari8s and continue to seek core funding and unrestricted
income
from
across
the
programme.
Our fundraising review has inGluded a focus on core fundiiig and business development support
enabling us to develop a more sustainable business model going fomard.

This report has been prepared in accordance with the provisions in Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006
applicable lo companies subject to the small companies regime.

I report to the Charity trustees on my examinatlon of the accounts of the Company for the year ended
3110312024. As Ihe charity s trustees of the Company (who are also Ihe direclors of the company for
the purposes of company lawl, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance
with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 1.the 2006 Act-). Having satisfied myself that the
accounts of the Company ar8 not requir&d to b8 audit8d for this year under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and
are eligible for independent examinalion, I report in respect of my ex8minalion of your charity's
accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ("the 2011 Act"). In carrying out my
examination, I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b)
of the 2011 Act.

Accounting policies
Basis of preparation
The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with FRS 102,
The Financial Reporling Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland las applied to small
entities by s8Ction 1A of th8 Standard).
Turnover
Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideralion received or receivable, net of discounts and
value added taxes. Turnover includes revenue earned from the sale of goods and from the rendering of
services. Turnover from the sale of goods is recognised when the significant risks and reward5 of
ownership of the goods have transferred to th8 buyer. Turnover from the rendering of services is
recognised by reference to the stage of completion of the contract. The 51age of completion of a contract
is measured by comparing the costs incurred for work performed to date to the total estimated contract
costs.
Tangible fixed assets
Tangible fixed assets are measured al cost less accumulative depreciation and any accumulative
impairment losses. Depreciation is provided on all tangible fixed assets, other Ihan freehold lané, at rates
calculated to write off the cost, less eslimated residual value, of each asset evenly over its expected
useful Ilfe, as follows..
Fixtures, fittings, tools and equipment

Debtors
Short term debtors are measured al transaction price (which is usually the invoice price), less any
impairment losses for bad and doubtful debts. Loans and other finsncial assets are initially recognised at
transaction price including any transaction costs and subsequently measured at amortised cost
determined using the effective interest method, less any impairment losses for bad and doubtful debts.
Credltors
Short term creditors are measured at transaction price (which is usually the invoice price). Loans and
other financial liabilities are initially recognised at transaction price net of any transaction costs and
subsequently measured at amortised cosl determined using the effective interest method.
Provlslons
Provisions (ie liabilities of uncertain timing or amount) are recognised when there is an obligation at the
reporting date as a result of a past event, it is probable that economic benefit will be transferred to settle
the obligation and the amount of the obligalion can be estimated reliably.
Pensions
Contributions lo defined contribution plans are expensed in the periDd to which they relate.
