Activities and Achievements

The primary purpose of the charity is to establish and develop youth work provision and other support to meet the needs of young people in Epping and the immediate area.

Structure

The charity is managed by the Trustees, a committee of four Christians with a variety of education, youth work or related experience.

The Box

The Covid-19 pandemic and resulting national lockdowns and restrictions on providing face to face services for young people dramatically impacted the work of the Koinonia Youth Trust. Face to face youth work with groups of young people during The Box after school social space was only possible for the first half of the autumn term 2020 and for a few weeks in December 2020. Plans to return in January 2021 were ended by the third national

lockdown and resulted in the year 2020-21 beginning and ending with restrictions on providing youth services.

The Trust was forced to adapt and develop new ways of supporting vulnerable young people, mainly through online services. Youth group sessions for targeted groups such as the EPYC (Epping Young Christians) group continued online via Zoom. After school social space moved online and was able to offer support to a small number of vulnerable young people.

Wellbeing packs with various treats and activities were also sent to some of the young people we were in contact with to support them during periods of home learning.

We hope that 2021-22 will enable the Trust to return to offering a comprehensive range of face to face services for young people, adapting to new patterns of need.

A Community Resource

Many groups and services which have regularly hired rooms at The Box were forced to suspend their own activities or move to an online provision. However the Trust was still able to facilitate room hire for some therapy provision deemed to be essential under NHS guidelines. This reduction in use has obviously significantly impacted revenue from room hire and it is hoped that this will return to normal in the forthcoming year.

Counselling Service

The Box Counselling Service has continued to operate throughout the year. Services were swiftly moved online or through telephone counselling at the end of March 2020 and this proved to be a valuable lifeline for a number of young people.

The costs of this valuable service continue to be met through the general funds of The Koinonia Youth Trust. The Box provides a flexible counselling service for young people who present with a variety of issues and continue to receive referrals from young people and families themselves or from professionals such as GPs, Schools and Mental Health services.

Thanks to additional support from the Rotary Club of Epping the Trust was able to improve the counselling provision through additional online support and introducing the ability to make online referrals to the service.

Staffing and Volunteers

The Trust employs one youth worker on a sessional contract and two counsellors on sessional contracts. The work of the Trust was also supported by 6 volunteers during the year. This small, flexible team has enabled the Trust to continue offering support to vulnerable young people over the last year.

Funding

The majority of funding comes through donations from individuals, churches and other community groups. Trustees would like to thank all those who have contributed to the valuable work of the Trust in the last year. This method of funding through a large number of small, regular donations has provided significant financial stability for the Trust as it is not left overly reliant on a specific source of funding. This has been particularly noticeable during the last year when normal activities have been disrupted.

Income from room hires was significantly lower as many groups and organisations were unable to continue offering face to face services during the pandemic. This was offset by the one-off grant of £10,000 received as part of the government’s initiative to support businesses affected by Covid-19.

Additional funding was received this year from The Rotary Club of Epping specifically to enable the Trust to develop online methods of working during the Covid-19 disruption.

Reserves Policy

The charity acknowledges God’s faithful provision for this work over the last 20 years and trusts Him for the future. Trustees acknowledge that the current situation presents additional challenges for charities and are committed to establishing and maintaining sufficient reserves to enable the charity to continue to operate for three months in the event that all other income ceased.

Impact of Covid-19

Trustees will continue to follow local and national guidance to ensure that the Trust continues to meet the needs of vulnerable young people while maintaining a safe environment. Trustees will prepare a plan to restore and expand the services offered when the situation shows signs of improving.
