The Frarne￿rk Knitters. Museum is an independeni wDrkin8 museum established by thc efftsrts of the local
¢ommunity and ¢ontrolltd by its Trustees. The museJm site consists of a complex of fratneshops. cottages
outbuildings and gardens. The fomi¢r chapel iogeth¢r with an adjoining former framework knitter's cottase
eomplei¢s the buildin85.
Th¢ museum pr¢s¢rves eviden￿ of the living and working ￿nditiO¥L% of the framework knitters during the
nineie¢nth century. Fram¢work Knitting w&$ responsible for Ihe gro￿ of RUddin￿on village. and also led to
th¢ developmenl of Ihe E35t Midl3Dds textile industy. Th¢ musewn's colleciions and displays tell the Story of
frarllework knitting from start to obsoles¢¢th¢¢ together with related social hisiory. in¢ludiTh8 the Luddite story.

The challenge of the FLnancial Year 2Y23 hos bttn ￿ continu¢ to build upon the suttess of our Lottery
Hcritage Funded proje¢r which was delivered in laie 2021.
The year began with a ¢ouple of signifi¢ant changes,. lan Row50n was elected as our new Chair of TTysiees, Ihe
Board thanked Prof. Julian Ellis for his sierling S¢TVi¢¢ in the Chair over the last ftw years. We're very pleased
to say That Julian wll continue TO seTV¢ as a Tnst¢e_
Our esieemed Musewn Director. Jim Grevatte. mova ort to plstures new. Jim and Julian had together played
key role in guiding th¢ museum through the Lottery Heritage Fund prnjcct. and for thai we owe them a huge
debt of gratitude.
The Board appoirtted Sarah Godfrey into the role of Museum Opcrdtions Manager. Sarah. who join¢d us from
Nottingham Con¢emporary Art Gallery, h&$ o stroThg commercial and creative background. She has skills in
retail and markeiing ond has made o fanrastie impaci in the time she ha5 been with u5.

W¢'re r¢ally grat¢fvl to both Jan and Matt for the 8reat contributions they have made over the yeaTS. and we
wish them ivell for their future cndeavor5.
Aside from our 4 part-time paid staff, we contiThu¢ to actively rwuit volunteers for our wDrkforce, and cu￿entlY
have over 40 who are regularly contributing hours. Volunieers ar¢ of course the lifeblo<>d of OUT organisation.

The main focu5 of the 2022r2023 period ha5 been to cary out e55critial repair5 to secure the integriry of our
hisiori¢ b￿1]ding$ by fixing l¢aking roofs and windows. This ￿d5 made possible by a succe5sfvI bid to Art5
Council England under ih¢ir MEND fiJndin8 stream. A ioMI of £77,000 w&s invested in these works which were
¢ompleted in May 2023 by lo¢al ¢onlrn¢tor Sieve[￿n Bros Ltd. While 5caffoldin8 w&s in place. we took the
opportunity to ¢arry out som¢ otheT fijrther self-funded wort, an efficien¢y which Saved the museum a
considerable sum of money.
Fy[￿1[bg was also ral￿d from Mu5¢um Dev¢lopm¢D¢ East Midlands and The Friends of the MLLseum to fvnd the
rit out of tlLC new Shop arta ai a w5t of just over £7.000. knxal ¢raftsman Fcnn Woodworkin8 was u5cd for this
projcrt. whi¢h havc draN¥n a lot of praise and the new atiratlive and praeiical layout has certainly helped
contribute to in¢reased shop sal¢s.
In Summer 2022 w¢ w¢re very proud to be awarded a Trip Advisor Trdveller's Choice Award. which puts us in
lh¢ lop IO°h rated wi$iior attractions worldwide. This És a consequence of thc cmph&sis we place on ensuring that
all our visiiors have an enjoyable lim¢, resulting in u5 eonsistcntly achiewng 5 star rdtings on Trip Advisor.
Our Tegular garden help¢rn. mentsl health support group Namre in Mind. have continued to contribuie io the
developm¢tyi of OUT cott3ge 8ard¢n. which has become a real jewel in our ¢rown. Ouidoor cafe seating in the
8ard¢n has proved very popular in th¢ wanner months and i5 well used by visitors.
2022 also saw otsr sil¢ used for the investiture of new Fr￿MeTr of,th¢ Wor5hipthl Company of Framework
Knitters, th¢ City of London livery company with whom we have close links. and the museum btcame a
Corporate Memb¢r of the Texiile InstLlUte.
We have in this period foThed a strong partheY5hip wth the Ruddinyon Art5 and Crafts So¢i¢ry, who now use
our chapel to hold their mcctings as well as for exhibitions 8￿d 'Kids Club. r¢gular childr¢n's art classes.
ADoth¢r valuable local Creati￿ partnership h&% been developed with ihe Ruddington 'Yarn Ninj&%' Yam
Bombing group who regularly fcawre in the media.
We w¢re pleased io be inviied by InrK)ceTht S¥rKM)thics to support their Vlorld's Biggesi Bobble Haf ¢v¢nt whi¢h
was held in Nottingham. A team of stsff and volunreers from the museum helped to ¢onstnJ¢t a hug¢ knitt¢d hat.

high-qualiry ¢off¢¢ and food has r¢suli¢d in massively in¢r¢ased footfall to the siie, which is now bu￿Ing every
day with the hum of people enjoying a wffee or light lunch. Patker's Yard has trnly be¢ome a destination in
Ruddington.
Spa¢¢ hire for various community activities has built steadily thrnugh the course of the period. but this is an area
Ihat we still fetl could bt developed. In 2022 our site featured in BBC TV episode5 of Celebrity Antiques Road
Trip and Bargain HunL aThJ was used as a lo￿10￿ for a musi¢ videA> by recording artist Pixie Styx.
The museum remains Indebted io our generous funders and supporters. in particular The Heritage Lottery Fund
Arts Council England. The Jon¢5 1986 ChaTitsbl¢ Trust. Mus¢wn Development Easi Midlands. wiihout whom
these w¢llbeitt& ¢ducatior) and community 3¢tiVjti¢s could simply nor hav¢ happened. Our Board of Trusie¢5
r¢mains fully wmmitted to good 8overrwi¢¢ and io deli¥eiing ex¢ellent value for every £ nis¢d or contributed.
The craft of framework knitting r¢mains on Ihe Heritage Crafts Council endangered list. More peoplc have
walked on lh¢ moon than aT¢ ¢urrently skilled from¢ kftitt¢rs. It remains a ¢or¢ aspect of our operations to k¢ep
this Craft which is so fundamenial to the history of the iexhle industry in the Easi Midlands alive.

expemditure has been capitslis¢d within the fv¢ehold property.
