The charrty'8 tru8tee8 are re8ponsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's
trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the
Chariti'es Act 2011 (The Charfb88 Act) and that an indeperKknt examination is needed.
It 18 our resp0￿￿'1ty to..

- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity
Commi88ioners (under Section 1445)(b) of the Charities Act)", and

Our examination was carried out in acc(xdance with General Directiong giv8n by the
Charity Commis8ionern. An examinth'on indudes a review of the accounting records
kept by the charty and a compari8on of the acc￿nts we89nted wtth those rocord8.11

This year saw the retirement of Mr. Martin Knops who had completed 20 yeafs a8 a trustee
and appointment of Grewy Cole who briThJ8 him a plethora of h￿l￿Ve1 skills and
chality experience.
The tru8tee board nomalty meets three times a year, this year il met five times a8 an
endeavour to Fryres8 Ixrrent and future projects. Meetir¥Js are h8kd either face to face or vla
Zoom platform.
The day-t¢>day I￿81nesS of managing SJAA is delegated to an Executive Committee
conslsting of the Chainnan, Finance ￿'re(￿Or. Prqecl Coordinator and one other nominated
tTUStee; th8y comrnuni¢ate frequenuy.
I trustees grve of their lime voluthity arKI receive no remuneration f￿ their services. SJAA
has no employees.
A review of the charity's financi81 controls was carried out by the trustees during the period,
and it was conduded that the apwopriate procedures were all in place.

ObJactlve8 and actlvl
SJAA'S TNst Deed sets out that ts wincipal objectives are the reli8f of povety. sid(ness and
distress, and the advancement of education. in Africa. There has ittn no change to the
objectives of SJAA as stated in the original 2001 Trust Deed.
SJA4 operates by makirvJ grants for the furtherance of its objectives. Its aid is directed
towards the support of sthools and other communty proieth in the Democrab'c Republic of
the Congo (DRC), the Cameroon and in Gabon.
SJAA work8 closely Imth the Jose￿it85, a R<xnan Catholic religious order founded in Belgium
in 1817, who established 8choo18 and missions in the DRC (fomierty kn(Avn a8 the
Belgian Congo and subsequently Zaire) and ￿se￿ere in Africa. The Josephites ￿main
active in these countries and wovide the loGal twrKe through vthich the projects funded by
SJAA are managed and implemented.
Sultable projeds for grant-aldlng are Identllled by both the trustees and by the local Josephfte
communtkn'es and their contacts. Prqects are as8888ed according to the criteria of the benefits
they would bring to their eommunits8, their cost effectivene88, and the likelihood of a
8u¢ce88ful impknment8tion.

Education, Ckgan water and Sanitation, and medi￿1 help are the thr88 t￿ik11ng blocks by which
we 8eek to help the local communrties where operate.
Education in the Democratic Republic of thè Congo (DRC)
Supporting education has been one of SJAA'S key aims slnce Its Inceptlon and most of the
funds it has disbursed have been for this purpose. This has taken tha fom of grants for school
building8. supplementing teachers, Government-financed salari08, and providing basic
equipment for the schools such as blackboards, desk8. and educational materials.
Additionally. ComFXrter equipment and Se￿ing machines have been provided to help pupils
eam a INing when they leave school. We are active in a region of the south-west of the DRC
known a8 the Kasai where we 8UPI)0rt 9 schools in Ilebo, Domiongo and Bulongo which
together educate over 3,000 pupils of whom at*xrt half are girls, and Iwo sclx)ols in Kinshasa
which educate over 1,OIX) puyls.
As we have done for many year5 now, this year YK again supported teachers in the Kasal
schools by augmentÉng their krw Salaries, and by provKling fund8 for the wrchase of
educational reswrces such as books and other dassroom resources. The money to do ttrH8
comes largely from donations generousty given from their salaries by the staff at St George's
Weybridge Junior School and College. which is then matched by St George's Weybridge, their
parent Charity. Fundraising events were also organized at tx)th schools.
Boarding Accommodation for Girfs in Domiongo. 2019-2022.
Construction of the ￿lId1r¥j continues at a slcrw pace. It was initially halted due lo COVID,
however, getting materi* to the site of the rew Domiittxy continues to wove difficult due to

the lack of a d￿nt roadway, much of the materials have had to be strapped to bicycles and
pushed to the location. Materials and experienced labour remain scarce The project is
expected to complete in 21r23.
Running Water
We take far granted that communitles will have safe running water, and this is not always the
case. In Cameroon able to assist two desperate communrties to seardi for water and
dig a well to provide fresh running waier at Maoudak arKI Ngome&8ing. We also helped to
replace a water pump in Dwram.
Smallor Projects
A number of smaller projects were approved ar#J completed in the year. To the DRC we
provided funds for the purchase of Sewing machines for Kinshasa St Etienne school and
replacement solar panel batteries in Ilebo to enable students to study elefAronically by
provldlng electritity to the 8dKJoI and ￿)MMunty. In Cameroon we Sent funds for solar
batt&ri8s in Douram plus the purchase two new motorcycles for the Josephites and the repalr
of their 4 x 4 pickup which had been damaged. The bikes enable the Jo88phrtes to visit local
communities in area8 where the road8 are too bad for any olher vehbde8. We abo provided
fund8 for bursaries to enabl6 refugees to attend 8chool in Koza Northwest Cameroon and t
books to enable the school to add a new dass year. thus for the first time, teaching sludents
at a higher educatFonal level. We were also able to 8UPPOrt the purch88e of a grain mill in
village outside of Douram to enable the women of communlty to grind in batches rather
than daily by hand.

SJAA has prepared Its Accounts for 2021r22, on ts Recepts and Payments ba818 due to a
tumover ofless than £250,000.
Donations received in the year were £55,845 <￿21- £49,458).
No Interest was receNed {2021 £17), the deposit account offerlng intere8t. was cltX8ed in 2021.
Gift Aid daim8 for two yearf8 donation8 yielded £12,621 (2021 £4,159 -lor one year).
Total Receipts were therefore £68.466 (2021- £53,632).
Grants made were £63,907 (2021 £68,048). In the pa8t five year8 SJAA h88 di8bursed £502k
in grant8.
The expen8e8 of running SJA4 romain and ￿oUnted to £1,S35 (2021 £1.634) of whlch
the cost of prlnting and distributiTrJ the Newsletter, wofe8sional fees, bank charges, and
website expenses account for all the ￿815. The total cost is kept d(r￿ because 8UPPOrt and
administration is WOVKled free of c￿e by voluntary help.
The cash balances of SJAA increased by £3,024 during 2022 (2021- £16,049 de(Trase) to
£91,881 as at 31 May 2022.
The cash balarKes of SJAA are held with Barday8 Bank plc (SJAA'S clearing bank). SJAA
hokls no shares, bonds w other assets.
At 31 May 2022, £50,821 (56%) of SJAA'S total Reserves (2021- £47,246; 54%) are classif￿d
as Restricted Income arKI may only be used for th8ir defined restri¢Xed Wrpor￿. The major

Restricted funds at 31 May 2022 were c.£16k held for the comwion of the Domiongo Girfs.
Domrtory, c.£18k for the 'Prime de RemerCi￿nf for the Kasai tead)ers and c£17k for
schools.
SJAA'S policy <)n reserv￿ is:
a) To designate sufficient reserves to:
1. Pay all grants that have been approved but not yet paid
2. Cover the cost for a reasonable period ahead of grants that have not yet been
approved blrt which, ts￿￿U9e of their recurring nature in the past. might be expected
to continuo
3. Provide for emergency requests (8.g. water we118) that may be received
4. Accumulate reserve8 to be able to fund larg8r scale projects such a8 the
buildinglrefurbi8hmenl of schooh.
In view of SJAA'8 low owating c(￿. the trustee8 do not con8id8r tt nece88ary to
designate any reserve8 to cover such costs because it would be an immaterial amount.
