Brief summary of the main activities and achievements of the charity during the year in relation to the charity’s objects:

a) Offering support, advice and information to all those who suffer from liver disease.
-
1] Free support newsletter ‘LIVErNEWS’. 2500 copies were distributed quarterly at a cost to the charity of £16,259.81 A PDF copy of each newsletter was placed on the LIVErNORTH website and sent electronically to 300 members by email. A Copy of every issue of the LIVErNEWS is sent to the British Library Legal Deposit Offices at Wetherby and Edinburgh.

2] No live meetings of the charity have been held and all meetings are now held online via Zoom until further notice. There have been seven Zoom meetings throughout the year and each meeting was addressed by a qualified speaker who talked about some aspect of liver disease with each talk including an interactive Q&A session. The talks were recorded and are available to view on our YouTube channel.

2024 April MASLD - New Name, New Treatment May Detection and Management of Liver Disease in Primary Care June Liver Cancer. Choosing the right treatment for each patient July Nutritional Considerations in Liver Disease Oct Fibrosis Assessment in those with ALD Nov New Therapies for PBC 2025 Jan UK Assessment and Recovery Centres - Fact or Fiction? 3] Operation of the telephone helpline continued with trained listeners and one bereavement counsellor. The helpline coordinator is Revd. Nigel Goodfellow M.A., (a governor of the charity).

4] The charity currently has twenty notice boards/leaflet dispensers in UK hospitals. All information leaflets provided free of charge to patients. The group now publishes 30 leaflets covering a wide variety of information for liver patients, carers and family members. All leaflets were reviewed during the period with several being updated. Leaflet printing costs for the year were £2322.48. We continue to provide translations of leaflets if required.

5] The group newsletter ‘LIVErNEWS’ was available to read online and all advice leaflets were made available to download online via the website.

6] All publications have been made available to read online via our website. 7] Our four bed patient & carer accommodation provided within Beechwood House in the grounds of the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne has continued to be used by families, patients and carers who are unable to travel to the hospital on a daily basis.

8] One governor (a barrister] has continued to work pro bono for members with respect to disability allowances and other legal matters of relevance to liver patients.

9] The group has continued to distribute copies of a DVD describing Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) both in the UK and abroad (a USA versions has been produced and a new version using animation is in the pipline).

10] The contents of the PBC DVD above and all of the talks and webinars given to the group have been made available to watch via our dedicated YouTube channel.

b) Offering support, advice and information to all formal and informal carers of liver disease sufferers. 1] Formal and Informal Carers attend online (Zoom/Teams) meetings where possible. Regular email updates, the LIVErNEWS and our information leaflets provide helpful information for carers.

2] The accommodation mentioned in item 2a) 7] has been used extensively by patients family members and carers during the period.

3] Many of the calls to the helpline are from carers and family members.

4] Carers are supplied with free information leaflets on request and can avail themselves of the information displayed on the notice boards in the Freeman Hospital Ward 16 and Ward 38 day rooms, the clinics and elsewhere. The website has several leaflets on liver diseases to download free of charge. Carers and clinicians are encouraged to refer patients to the charity as a pathway to further support.

5] An Educational Grant of £6230.98 was made during the period. This funding was for a period of specialist filming by Transplant TV. An additional grant of £3000.00 was made to Transplant TV and an outstanding debt of £2510.98 acquired by Transplant TV was cleared by the charity.

6] Funding of £720 was provided to publish a RCS (Royal College of Surgeons) paper from Mr
Jeremy French, Transplant Surgeon on: ‘Hepatic Cyst causing Cardiac Arrest in a patient’.

c) Assisting in the funding of research into the causes of, treatments for, and prevention of all forms of liver disease.

1] A grant of £32,848.00 to cover additional costs for the project ‘UK-AIH: Nanostring transcriptomics – understanding the biological basis of disease risk’ was made during the period.

2] The charity is an officially designated NIHR non-commercial partner for one funding stream.

e) Assisting with the provision of amenities, equipment and funding for the care of liver patients, their carers and families providing that such provision shall be for the general benefit of a liver patient or liver patients.

1] Christmas gifts to the value of £302.00 were distributed to inpatients on 25[th] Dec 2024.

f) Advancing the public awareness of liver disease, the treatment of liver disease and the prevention of liver disease.

1] Several articles and interviews initiated by the charity regarding liver transplants, alcoholism and organ donation initiatives were published/broadcast by the media.

2] The Charity website www.livernorth.org.uk continues to receive several thousand hits each year with information leaflets and the newsletter (LIVErNEWS) available for download.

3] The charity makes full use of social media and regularly issues tweets using twitter and posts using facebook with the hashtag #livernorth and @livernorth.

The relief of persons suffering from liver disease and those persons caring for sufferers, in particular but not exclusively, by:

c) Assisting in the funding of research into the causes of, treatments for, and prevention of all forms of liver disease.

e) Assisting with the provision of amenities, equipment and funding for the care of liver patients, their carers and families providing that such provision shall be for the general benefit of a liver patient or liver patients.

f) Advancing the public awareness of liver disease, the treatment of liver disease and the prevention of liver disease.

The trustees are the only body entitled to appoint new charity trustees. A candidate is proposed by a trustee and the appointment is approved subject to a majority vote in favour.

12. The charity has the following relationships with related parties:

a) A working relationship with the Freeman Hospital and has ex-gratia use of some facilities (meeting rooms, lecture theatres, seminar rooms, parking and access permits).

b) The charity actively pursues liaison with many community health care groups and health care information sources, all of which have the charity listed as a resource. The charity is also listed on several community care websites.

c) The charity has a medical advisory committee (MAC) to assist in assessing the merit of appeals received from the medical community. All members of the medical advisory council with two exceptions are liver disease specialists (clinicians & surgeons) from the region. The exceptions are one scientist from the University of Newcastle and one governor of the charity. Recommendations from the MAC are considered by the management committee (governors) before any decision is made to give financial support to appeals of this nature.

d] Members and Governors of the charity represent the views of liver patients, their carers and relatives on various forums and networks both social and professional as well as reviewing patient information sheets, research proposals and documentation as part of extensive PPI/E (Patient Participation Involvement and/or Engagement).

e] The charity has continued to function as an NIHR Non-Commercial Partner during the period.
