Friends of Double Joy (FODJ) is constituted by Deed of Trust and is a registered charity, no.1087172. Its address is 185 Graham Road, Sheffield S10 3GR for official correspondence and 24 Knowe Hill Crescent, Lancaster LA1 4JY for general enquires from the public, friends and supporters. Our Trust Deed was executed on 5th May 2001, and we received charity status on 26[th] June 2001.

The object of the charity is the relief of poverty, need, hardship, distress and sickness and the advancement of education and protection of children in Nyanza Province, South Western Kenya (the area of benefit) particularly those children at ‘Double Joy Children’s Farm’ (DJCF).

We held 2 trustees meetings this year via Zoom on 16th May 2020 and 24[th] October 2020.

Susan Hilliard (trustee and treasurer of FODJ), visited DJCF 24th Feb to 6th March 2020. She reported DJCF had suffered two months without electricity though this was resolved before her visit. She presented the Risk Assessments drafted by Mary Alston (FoDJ Trustee). She visited nearby Dagamoyo and Ruma primary day schools that Double Joy children attend. She also saw Rarieda Secondary School and met the Double Joy children who attend.

FODJ, with the help of Joanna and Phillip Riley launched a nationwide Double Joy Tea Party on 2[nd] May which raised £4825. Quakers in Britain awarded FODJ a Quaker Peace & Social Witness Relief Grant of £4,242 in October to install solar panels for lighting the classrooms, clinic and assembly hall (Masterman Hall). This will help overcome the inconvenience of intermittent and sometimes sustained electrical outages and improve DJCF’s eco-sustainability.

At close of 2020 DJCF had 92 Children (41 girls, 51 boys) of which 15 were in Grade 8 and are going to do their National Exams in March 2021 which enables them to move to the next stage in Education.. 87 children are primary school age who are attending local Primary Schools, and 5 younger ones are in the Early Child Development at Double Joy. One child is learning in special School for the blind and comes back to DJCF in holidays. .

DJCF is also supporting 25 young people at secondary school, and 13 at vocational training centre studying metal work, building, plumbing and beauty therapy,.The last of our university students supported by DJCF graduated in December 2020 as Bachelor of Commerce (Banking and Finance Option). Following the last newsletter appeal we now have sponsors for 8 of the 15 school leavers moving on to secondary education. DJCF’s new role as a designated referral ‘Place of Safety’ for children needing emergency placement is increasing.

All children have remained on site as much as possible during restrictions to stop Covid-19. Some of the older children have had to return to Double Joy from their placements. The young mother and baby who joined DJCF in December 2019 are doing well.

To avoid Covid-19, special measures were taken; staff wearing masks, regular hand washing and social distancing, restricting visitors, and children staying home from school from March 2020 with a phased return in September to January 2021. DJCF kept some lessons going during this period . Materials such as disinfectant, gloves and masks were supplied by the local health officer and a digital thermometer was kindly donated.

FODJ has a large number of friends/supporters who make regular donations and inform others about DJCF. We currently have a mailing list of approximately 400 friends/supporters. We produced a summer and winter newsletter that was circulated to all on our mailing list. Hilary Blythe and Eric Roseden co-edit our summer and winter newsletter.

We continue to assist with salaries of staff required to care for and teach the children, medical care for the children, food, clothing and materials for the school and provisions for farming. We contribute to administration and communication overheads and assist with transport costs that are high due to DJCF’s remote location.

Trustees and friends of DJCF are active in increasing awareness of the work of FODJ and DJCF and have a web site ( www.double-joy.org.uk). Our web site continues to provide extensive information about DJCF and current FODJ reports and events.

We continue to link UK pen pals with children at DJCF. Ruth Adhiambo coordinates letter writing at DJCF, leading to a flow of correspondence between friends in UK and children at DJCF. This scheme provides a vibrant link between the donor community and DJCF and is an important source of communication and relationship building that enhances the work of FODJ.

We have a FODJ Child Protection Policy which has been agreed at our FODJ trustees meeting in October 2015 and by the Board of Management at Double Joy. It states that all visitors to DJCF from UK who are staying for more than I week are required to have an up to date DBS check.

New Government legislation on Data Protection came into effect on the 25[th] May 2018. We registered with the Information Commissioner (ICO) in October 2017 in accordance with the requirements for Data Protection. In May 2018 we began implementing our Data Protection Policy which has included deleting and shredding data that is no longer needed and seeking consent from all on our contact list, to remain on our data base. We ensure all information covered by Data Protection regulations is stored in secure locked cabinets and electronic devices which are password protected.

Our accounts will be verified by our Independent Examiner. They show total receipts this year of £111,782 (a decrease of £1401 on last year) with £18,409 carried over from 2019. We made grants totaling £121,559 to DJCF in 2020 (a increase of £12,288 on last year). Our total costs including bank charges were £791. Fundraising events organised by trustees this year have raised a total of £7504(an increase of £53 on last year) We claimed £17,678 in Gift aid (a increase of £2677 on last year). We have supporters who donate by standing order, making a combined sum of £50846 this year (an increase of £2994 from last year). Cash funds at this year-end totalled £8632. In 2020 we succeeded in increasing standing order donations by £2994, but saw a dramatic decrease in one off donations of £14268. Total one off donations in 2019 were £43694, and in 2020 total were £29,426.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31 / 12 / 2020 .
