TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT
YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2025
The trustees have pleasure in presenting their report and the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2025 which comply with statutory requirements, the governing document and the Statement of Recommended Practice, Accounting and Reporting by Charities.
Objectives and Activities
The objective of the charity is to promote excellence and relevance in science education through pupil participation in open-ended programmes of real scientific exploration and application.
In more detail, the charity’s objects are the advancement of education in such ways as are exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales, and specifically:
-
To promote education in schools and other educational establishments by the involvement of students of school age in projects and activities of scientific research investigation and application.
-
- To support and/or provide funds for any wholly charitable organisation which operates to promote education in schools and other educational establishments by the involvement of students of school age in projects and activities of scientific research investigation and application.
-
To organise conferences, meetings and events and publish materials by any means (including the internet) which examine the feasibility of and/or disseminate the outcome of activities which promote education in schools and other educational establishments by the involvement of students of school age in projects and activities of scientific research investigation and application.
-
To promote scientific and educational research.
-
To carry out such other legally charitable purposes as the trustees shall from, time to time, by deed or deeds executed with their unanimous consent declare.
Structure Governance and Management
The trustees aim to meet regularly as a management committee. Day to day responsibility for the running of the trust is delegated to Dr E S Albone who is one of the trustees.
A strategic review was carried out which identified the major risks to which the organization is exposed. The review resulted in systems being put in place to manage those risks. The trustees will carry out an annual review of the risks faced and the procedures established to manage those risks. Internal risks are minimized by the implementation of effective internal control procedures which ensures both appropriate authorisation of all transactions and projects and consistent quality of delivery for all operational aspects of the charity. These procedures are periodically reviewed for their continuing effectiveness.
We have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aims and objectives and in planning our future activities.
Achievements and Performance
Clifton Scientific Trust continues to implement innovative programmes which enable school students of all ages and backgrounds to share the enriching experience of participation in real-life science and engineering through direct engagement with professionals from the world of science, engineering and medicine.
Interacting with professionals, students question, discuss and think for themselves. In the process, particularly in the Trust’s UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop programme, they not only deepen their understanding of science and engineering way beyond the curriculum, but they also build invaluable presentational and international team-working soft skills and grow in confidence and pride in their achievements, while also developing a global awareness and having their eyes opened to opportunities open to them. This experience has proved to be particularly valuable for students from less privileged backgrounds.
In the current year we have continued our two principal programmes, one our UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop Programme (we have run some 28 such Workshops hosted in universities in Britain and in Japan since 2001), and the other, our Meet-a-Medic programme with Primary Schools in the Bristol area (running

since 2005). Both have great scope to develop and expand, further engaging more schools, more universities and more scientists/engineers/medics given the resource.
1 2024 UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop was hosted at Cambridge University, July 2024. Following our established pattern, the 2024 Cambridge Workshop brought together 53 post-16/Senior High School students from 13 schools, equally split between schools from UK and Japan, together with accompanying teachers. Participants lived closely together for a week, the Japanese and the British students sharing rooms and taking part in our student-centred evening programme of activities and discussions which enhanced intercultural understanding and international bonding.
As Young Scientists, the students worked in small international teams as guests of 5 science/engineering research groups across the university, where they were presented with an open-ended research challenge devised by their scientist/engineer hosts and related to their own research programme.
Even in just a few days, the students experienced real life scientific exploration which went far beyond anything they could encounter in school, and where questioning, thinking for themselves and (international) teamwork were essential. At the end of the week, each team gave a presentation of their achievements and answered questions in front of an audience which contained distinguished guests. The quality of the presentations demonstrated just how much the students were able to achieve in just a few days.
Accompanying teachers took responsibility for their students, observed but did not take part in the projects, and networked, sharing good practice, not least through the Teachers’ Forum which is always part of the Workshop, taking back what they had gained to their own schools.
The projects that the students worked on involved the following:
-
Making Jet Engines more efficient with the Whittle Laboratory, Cambridge University Dept Engineering
-
Unveiling the Secrets of Maternal Nutrition on Baby Brain Growth with the Institute for Metabolic Studies, Addenbrooke’s Hospital
-
Mapping Disturbances to the Climate Record by Rotary Drilling in Cambridge Dept of Earth Science
-
Role of Nuclear Energy in Mitigating Climate Change led by Prof Geraldine Thomas, Imperial College
-
Science Communication-Producing Podcasts Reporting on the Workshop led by Cambridge’s Naked Scientist Team
2 2025 UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop proved a very successful Workshop also hosted in Cambridge University, July 2025. This will be reported in our Trustees’ Report for the year 2025-2026. For further information see www.ukjapanscienceworkshop.com The Trust is currently planning a 2026 UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop in Tokyo.
3 The Meet-a-Medic Programme Meet-a-Medic continues with great effect. During the year to March 2025, Clifton Scientific Trust worked with 4 Bristol Primary Schools in Brislington, Whitchurch and Knowle Park with classes ranging from Year 3 to Year 6. The programme, devised and run in close partnership with the Galenicals (The University of Bristol Medical Student Society), has been handed on from generation to generation of medical students in the current format since 2005. Medical students give their free time as unpaid volunteers, this year contributing 45 medical student afternoons in these schools.
The programme is as popular with the medical students who devise the afternoons in association with the Trust as with the schools. The Galenicals gain invaluable experience in relating to young children, as well as encountering the sharp minds of excited, questioning children from all backgrounds.
In summary, medical students work with classes (commonly 2-4 medical students per class). bringing their experience and knowledge of medicine to the pupils through dialogue, mutual questioning, presentations and practical activity, with the specific aims of raising pupil aspiration, stimulating questioning, providing positive role models and supporting the curriculum. Written feedback routinely requested from the teachers indicate that these objectives are very well met. Medicine proves to be a most effective context for engaging primary school

pupils. The Trust makes no charge to the schools for these events and we are always welcomed back. The medical student volunteers are excellent ambassadors for science in general and for medicine in particular.
4 Clifton Scientific Trust remains an active member of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee and has been invited to contribute an article on its UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop programme for the 2025 Winter edition of “Science in Parliament”. Trust Director Eric Albone also values his continued membership of the UK-Japan 21[st] Century Group.
5 The Trust thanks our distinguished Patrons, the Earl of St Andrews, Professor Dame Athene Donald FRS, Professor Anthony Cheetham FRS, and Mr Mouhssin Ismail for their valued support and encouragement, as well as all have supported and participated in our programmes.

Financial Review
During the year ending 2025, the gross income was £86,238 (2024: £102,320) and the expenditure £81,363 (2024: £66,369). The net income for the year was £4,875 (2024: £35,951).
Reserves
The Trust Deed places no restrictions on the investment powers of the trustees.
The trustees have established a policy whereby the unrestricted funds not committed or invested in tangible fixed assets (“the free reserves”) held by the charity, should be between 3 and 6 months of the expenditure excluding direct expenditure on workshops. This equates to between £2,033 and £4,065 in general funds. At this level the trustees feel that they would be able to continue the current activities of the organisation in the event of a significant drop in funding. It would obviously be necessary to consider how the funding would be replaced or activities changed accordingly. At the balance sheet date there were free reserves of £35,118 which is above the reserves policy (2024: £30,393).
Trustees
The trustees, who are directors for the purpose of company law, who served the charity during the year and up to the date of this report are set out on page 5.
