Objectives and activitie
Thè object ol lh8 charty is to provid6 or assist in th8 provision ol a swimming pool for the inhabilanls of the district of
Lewes for recreational and olher18isure time occupation in the inter8sls ol their social welfare with the object of improving
their conditions ol lile.
The PPCA has built up a reputation for sound management and the partnership with Lewes Town Council has gr8atly
benelited thousands of locals and visitors to Lewes who enjoy open air swimming.
The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Chwily Commission in decidin9 what activities the charity
should underlako lo providg a public b¥nofil,

open season since PPGA took over the running ol the pool in 2001. Pells Pool is the oldest continuously open (since
18611 frgshwoler QUId￿r pog1 In the UK lo Ihg bosl of our know19dge.
The p¢oI remains popular wilh our10¢81 ¢ommunlty and visitors Irorn luriher afi&ld. Thtsre wore many happy swimmers 81
Pells Pool during the 2023 season. We have been pleas8d lo be a￿8 offer a wide variety of sessions throughout the
season and swimmers report back re9iilarly that they hawe enjoyed the opportunity to swim at this historic and beautiful
freshwater pool. For the first time In 2023, we hove employed three permanent members of staff Phil Fi8nsley remains in
place ay our Pool Manao8r, and ￿ thank hi￿ for his conlinuinq enthusiasm. dilio8nee and hard work havinfj overseen the
pool through many seasons and changes and most notably ensLJring that the PDOI could continue to be open during the
pandemic ytsars. Al the start ol last yaar, Leanne Lyndsell, who is a very exp&r￿nCed swimming 188ch6r and pool
mdfidger was appoiiil¥LI Dupuly Mdiiager and Har¥t)y Gdrbull. who has work¥d at other local pools was appuinl8d
Assislant Manager.
We have been pleased to welcome back several longstanding Ille9uards and klosk staff from prevlous seasons as well as
ernploying several new lilegu£rds. Leanne ran a suc￿sSful essential lifeguarding skills evening for trustees lo learn
alongsid8 lil8guards lo b8tter understand Ih8ii rol8 and rgsponsibili118s, which was rnuch £ppreciat8d and which will b8
repeated annually. Leanne has also provided 5wimrning lesson5 to custorners jchildren and adult51 and she will continLJe
lo offer trese in the coming se8son. We have held 5ever81 successful even15 during our 2023 season. These h8ve
inr.liided thÉ summtrr sol*lir.@ swim In June which Is In¢r&asingly popular 8ath yttar, with Ilckéls sèlliw out quickly. This
year the wgather was bpaijtiful and as the sun r05e, several swirnmprs la1er described the water as turning golden in the
•arly morning light. In July wg hgld our first Summar Swimalong. This includod a barb8cu8 run by our trusl8•s, tho kiosk
slaffed by our lifeguards and other team rn8tnbers. tnusic play8d by local rnusicians and a karaoke session. The Iick8ts
sold out qLJickly, many families attended and It Wa5 a lovely day. We also held three midnight 5wms during the rnain
$ummer season. In Autumn we hdd a furlher bonffire swirn on 5 NoY8mber w8 a130 ran a barbecu8 SO that swlmmers
could 8njoy h(rt lood afler Ih8ir swin. During Ihe $8ason we w8lcorn8d 8arly morning 5W1rnrn8rs who often like 10 5Witn on
their way lo work as well 85 other regular swimrners. Later in the day we provided a range of differenl swimming sessions
including quieter rtrlaxed mid-morning sessions. lane swimming and family sessions in the afternoon. Thor8 ar& avening
se55ions foi Ih05e who prefer to Swim after WDik or al the end ol the day. There are se55ion5 to cater for all. There have
been yog8 sessions by Ihe pool during the summer se5%0n. Spver?I groups and individua15 have booked Ihe pcK)I for
training sassions or birihday parliss and othgr cèlèbralions.

he8lth of the local ¢ornmunity. Swirnrners tell us Ihat they p8rti¢ularly appreciate the qualitrf of the waler. the peaceful
*nviionm8nl and the setting of th8 pool. We havo also given thought lo th8 non-wat8r-basèd aspects or the pool and
vielcome p￿p18 who ￿lSh lo just pop in for a chat al the ki05k or to buy a drink or snack even if th8y are not swirnming.
Although there are other outdoor pools in the lo¢al area. Pells Pool remains popular and is an i¢onic and treasured pgrt of
Lèw&s history lor many paopla whath$r they swim or noL Foundry Healthcarè has conlinLtsd to raler pa￿.￿nIS for wellbeing
swim5, enabled by funding frorn lh8 Enjoolata Foundation. Over the last couple of years, we have introduced the planters
along the flint wall, which artract bee5 and other insects and are popular with swimmers who often enjoy silb'ng near the
plants lo dry off after IkBii switn. The ancient hornb8atn 1188s, which piovide welcotll8 shade on a hoi sufflttiei's day are
part of an ongoing tree study to ensure their longevity. The paving of the side of the pool by the flint wall is now eornpleted.
All side5 of the pool haije now be￿ repaved In recent ye8r5. We have new chernic81 stDr8ge facilities. Another
improvernent in 2023 ￿aS the introduction ol a ramp near lo th8 sun terrac8 and charigiiig rooms to make thes& rnora
aCC8ssible for all.
We have received many enthusiastic and good reviews verbally and on variou8 social media ouuels frorn cuslorners
throLJghout the 2023 season. We have listened care￿IlY to all feedback trom customers and always welcome suggestions
for any lurth8r irnprovemenls whi¢h could be made. 11 is Important lo us lo ¢onlinu8 lo 8Th￿90 with our10¢81 communily as
vie appreciate that we are only temporary custodians of this important pool and wish to e￿Ure that il is maintained to th8
best standard possible so that it continues lo be well used and available for future genera￿'r)nS for m￿Y years lo come.
Ther8 will be changes when th8 new Human Nature dev8lopmenl is corrpleled over the coming year8 near lo lh8 pool.
Trustees have priorilised ensuring that representations have been rnade on behalf ol the pool during 2023 as the planning
gppIic8tion has prooressed to minimise os far as possible any significant ¢hanoe lo the beautiful environment in which the
pool is situated whilst re¢ognising lh8 many posits've 8SP8CtS that the new developmenl is likely 10 bnng lo the town. I
viould like to thank my fellow trustees for the lime, care and expertise they have given lo enable us to rnake
represen181ions on behalf of the Pool during each stage DI the planning application by Human Nature. There habe been
hundreds ol pages of plans and documents lo review lo 8nsure we have all had a clear understanding of Ilie polenli81
impact ol this new development lo be able lo rnake the necessary represenlalions. We are continuing to plan for updating
our klosk 1o¢11111gs for the bengllt ol cuslomgrs whilsl prtrstrivlng its Icon1¢ and popular appeaiancg In Ihg ¢omlno y9ars,
We wero very honovrod and graloful on b6half of Polls Pool to have rgeoivod a boqu861 ofjust ovor £30,000 from Jun¢
Eade, a local resident. who had been very fond of Pells Pool througioul her1rf8. This will be pul lo good use lor the benefit
of wol users in thè years to com8.
I h8ve very rnuch enjoyed rny first year as Chair of the current PPCA comtnittee which currently has nine trustees. I thank
each of them lor their ojnsiderable effort5 and continued p8S5ion for the pool. Owing lo the many lacals of our roles as
trusiees, we have gstablished vari?us sub-cgmmilteos to m8k* ¢h$ most of gach Irustge's gyperiisg £nd ¥xperign¢e. All
tru51ee5 are regular swimtners and have a mutual love of Ihe Pells. We all work logelher. having 8 respon8ibilily lo support
Phil. Leanne, Harvey and the team in maintaining and running the pool throughout the seeson alongside plannirrfJ for the
futurè of thè pool so that it can continuè to b8 ènjoyad by our community.
I would like lo thank all stsff, tho Iruslegs and all the visitors lo the wol for another su¢¢essful season in 2023 and am
very much looking forward lo the 2024 season and all Ihal il brings.
