Over the past three decades OAEE has provided support and teaching/training initiatives for ophthalmologists in Eastern and Central Europe. OAEE has also carried out multiple trips to centres in Eastern Europe providing ophthalmic equipment.

## Section D Achievements and performance
**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**
In the year 2023 Ophthalmic Aid To Eastern Europe donated Ophthalmic supplies to Ukraine in a project entitled “Return to Lviv”, 30 years following a previous trip “Focus on Lviv” in 1993. The items were delivered overland by van by two medical students from Scotland in May 2023.
Ophthalmic equipment was sourced and collected from many donors including Optometrists, Ophthalmic surgeons and NHS Trusts by Dr Peter Cackett throughout 2022 and the early part of 2023 in response to the urgent need for assistance in Ukraine following the outbreak of war.
Items included Haag-Streit slit lamps and fundus cameras for ophthalmic examinations and also Kay Pictures vision tests for testing visual acuity in pre-literate children with a value of £40,000, which were distributed to all three hundred and twenty paediatric ophthalmology departments in Ukraine, as requested by Professor Sergiy Rykov, President of the Association of Paediatric Ophthalmologists of Ukraine, Kyiv.
The items were collected throughout the UK and were transported overland to Medyka, a village at the Polish/Ukrainian border for handover of the donations to ophthalmologists from Lviv. The recent trip was summarised in a report to Eye News magazine.
In addition OAEE donated £495 to the charity Agents For Change, a charity that works in Romania with people with special needs, including those with mental health issues and mental and physical disabilities. The funds were donated to assist the charity provide ophthalmic care to Romania patients in need and also to Ukrainian refugees displaced by the war in Ukraine.
