ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024

Objectives and activities

Sandhurst Silver Band is governed by its written constitution, and its objectives are to maintain, improve and advance the education of the public through the promotion and practise of Brass Band Music.

Structure, governance and management

The management and control of the band is vested in a committee which comprises the officers and others appointed at the Annual General Meeting.

The Management Committee meet throughout the year and are selected members are legally deemed to be trustees. Each member has been allocated specific responsibilities in order to simplify the running of the band.

Trustees are elected by members at the AGM from amongst the members.

Achievements and performance

The Silver Band consolidated it’s contesting pedigree in 2024. The band finished 10th in the Championship section of the LS&C regional contest and made a return to the Wychavon contest, finishing 10th. The band returned to the Whit marches after a long period of absence, with top 10 finishes in a number of villages. The band will look to improve these placings with the appointment of a new Musical Director in January 2025. The band thanks outgoing Musical Director, Joshua Geddes, for his work and his successful start to conducting in the UK.

The Silver Band’s management employed a deliberate strategy of seeking new partners to hold joint concerts with. The Lorna Timms Dance School and Surrey Age Heath Concern brought new and robust audiences to successful events. Both organisations would like to work with the band again, and this should prove an avenue for repeatable events that minimise the load on the management committee.

Sandhurst Community Brass had another successful year of music making. This year marked the retirement of Derek Holland from the band, for which the band thanks his service. The band will advertise for a new conductor to take them in the new year.

Brasshoppers and private music lessons continue their success story under the direction of Ian Dewhurst. Players have started to graduate the group, moving to Wokingham St. Sebastian’s Band and Sandhurst Community Brass respectively.

Private hire groups held a record number of engagements. This including a Pall Mall engagement and many “Sandwurst Bier Band” performances.

All three bands had a successful festive period, with all bands holding their own Christmas concerts and holding carolling events.

The charity has introduced robust safeguarding policies & procedures in the year to ensure compliance with local requirements and best practice.

ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024

Financial review

The organisation maintained profitability in the year ended 31 December 2024.

Income

Concert income and expenses fell year-on-year, primarily because the planned Snowman concerts were cancelled. Based on current forecasts, this event is necessary for the Silver Band to operate at a profit on its own.

Fundraising income decreased year-on-year largely due to the timing of SCB’s 2022 Christmas fundraising deposits, as well as the expected receipt of private Christmas engagements and card donations later in 2025. On an accruals basis, however, this was the best year in recent times, and all those who volunteered in the three bands deserve commendation. The management committee expects every bandmember to contribute to these efforts in 2025. A fundraising highlight was at Waterloo station, where carollers raised £1,005 in just three hours.

Brasshoppers introduced a voluntary donation scheme for parents, representing about £600 of annual income. This is in addition to approximately £1,750 donated by Ian Dewhurst, who very kindly passes on his peripatetic teaching fees every year. Brasshoppers’ funds are used to purchase instruments for the youth group, and their reserves will cover some central expenses going forward.

Expenses

Travel expenses and associated bandmember donations rose year-on-year, while Gift Aid decreased. These changes stem from the timing of processing claims and do not represent a material change.

Property expenses increased significantly due to an initiative to improve the bandroom’s lighting provision, funded from Silver Band reserves.

Audit and accountancy costs rose because an independent examiner was required for the prior year’s accounts in 2024.

Next year, instrument maintenance is expected to increase to around £2,000, driven by the timing of services needed.

Uniforms have decreased as shell jackets were purchased in the prior year.

Contest and deputy expenses saw a modest rise, primarily due to participation in Whit Friday and the additional percussion requirements at Wychavon, which necessitated two deputies.

SCB’s improved financial position—from a loss last year on an accruals basis to a healthy profit this year— largely stems from changes of Musical Director, with interim conductors charging much lower fees. Additionally, the Silver Band’s conductor received only travel expenses, resulting in significantly reduced MD fees overall.

The trustees have reviewed the reserves and consider the current level sufficient for at least twelve months. They also view the Band Roof as the only financial liability.

The committee reserves the right to use fixed-rate, short-term financial investments (under one year) in the next year if needed, both to address financial liabilities and to raise short-term financing on short notice. This approach would enable the band to make the most of interest rates on its substantial cash reserves.

No funds are held as custodian trustee on behalf of others.
