## **TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT** 2024/2025

## OUR STORY

**The Melanoma Fund was founded in 2000 after Harry Townsend lost his wife, Myfanwy, to melanoma. Believing her death may have been prevented through greater awareness, earlier diagnosis and better sun protection, he turned personal tragedy into a mission to help protect future generations from melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.**

**Harry understood that education had the power to save lives. As someone with a lifelong passion for the outdoors, he recognised that people who work, play and volunteer outside often face prolonged exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. That insight continues to shape our work today.**

**Over the past 26 years, the Melanoma Fund has evolved into a national prevention charity. We work with schools, sports organisations, workplaces and outdoor partners across the UK to make sun and heat protection a normal part of everyday life through education, partnerships, practical interventions and behaviour change.**

**Although Harry passed away in 2020, his vision lives on. Every partnership we build, every organisation we support and every person we help to protect is part of the legacy he created.**

Preventing skin cancer. Protecting future generations.

Our founder Harry Townsend

## **TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT** 2024/2025

## OUR MISSION

Our mission is to prevent melanoma and other forms of skin cancer through education, helping people understand UV risk and adopt behaviours that reduce their lifetime risk of skin cancer.

During 2024/25, we continued to focus on those most at risk from prolonged UV exposure, particularly people who work, volunteer and participate in sport and outdoor recreation, while also supporting children and young people to develop healthy habits from an early age.

Working alongside national governing bodies, outdoor organisations, schools, brands, commercial, creative and community partners, we developed practical resources, national campaigns and training designed to make sun protection easier to understand and easier to adopt for all age groups.

Throughout the year, we also continued to refine our approach to prevention, recognising that increasing awareness alone does not always lead to behaviour change. This work laid important foundations for the continued development of Sunguarding®, helping organisations embed sun and heat protection into everyday practice.

## **TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT** 2024/2025

## MELANOMA AND NON-MELANOMA SKIN CANCER STATISTICS

average new melanoma cases diagnosed **20,980** each year in the UK (2023–2025).

**5th**

Most common cancer in the UK.

## **Skin cancer: a growing public health challenge**

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK and continues to rise at an alarming rate. While many cases are preventable, incidence continues to increase, highlighting the need for greater emphasis on prevention and behaviour change.

## **THE CAUSE**

**164%**

Increase in melanoma incidence since the early 1990s.

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and sunbeds is the primary cause of most skin cancers. Around 9 in 10 melanoma cases are considered preventable through sensible sun protection and avoiding sunburn.

## **OUR RESPONSE**

Projected new melanoma cases each year **26,500** by 2040.

The Melanoma Fund works to prevent melanoma and other forms of skin cancer through education, behaviour change and practical interventions that help people enjoy the outdoors safely.

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) **225,000+** Estimated new cases diagnosed in the UK each year.

Increase in incidence since the early 1990s

**169%**

**Around 90% of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers are preventable.**

## **TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT** 2024/2025

## OUR WORK

The Melanoma Fund develops practical education, campaigns and partnerships that help people understand UV risk and make sun and heat protection part of everyday outdoor life.

## **Sunguarding[®] Outdoors**

Sunguarding® Outdoors provides practical guidance for people who work, volunteer and spend time outdoors, encouraging simple behaviours that reduce UV exposure and promote healthier outdoor environments.

## **Slip! Slap! Swing!**

Our dedicated golf campaign encourages golfers and PGA Professionals to make sun protection part of everyday play. Working with leading organisations across the sport, we continue to promote practical behaviours that help reduce UV exposure on and off the course.

## **Sunguarding[®] Course**

During the year we continued to develop and promote the Sunguarding® Course, providing coaches and outdoor professionals with practical guidance on UV risk, heat protection and their duty of care. The course is supported by leading organisations across the sport and outdoor sectors.

## **Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code**

Helping children develop healthy habits remains a key priority. The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code provides simple, engaging resources for parents, schools, clubs and activity providers to encourage children to enjoy the outdoors safely.

## **Sunguarding[®] Sport**

Sunguarding[®] Sport supports participants, coaches, officials and spectators with practical guidance on sun and heat protection, helping organisations embed good practice across all levels of sport.

## **Sunguarding[®] Schools pilot**

During the year we began developing the Sunguarding® Schools pilot, exploring how sun safety education could be embedded within primary schools through engaging, curriculum-linked resources that encourage lifelong healthy behaviours.

## **Partnership working**

Collaboration remains central to our approach. By working with national governing bodies, outdoor organisations, schools and sector leaders, we continue to extend our reach and maximise our impact far beyond our own resources.

## CEO REVIEW

**This year has been one of reflection, challenge and progress.**

**For more than a decade, our mission has remained unchanged: to prevent melanoma and other forms of skin cancer through education. Yet throughout the year, I found myself returning to one simple question: if awareness of skin cancer has never been higher, why do so many people still get sunburnt?**

**That question challenged many of our assumptions and reinforced something that has become increasingly clear. Education remains essential, but information alone rarely changes behaviour. To me, this represents one of the greatest opportunities in prevention. If we can help organisations make sun and heat protection a normal part of everyday life, we have the potential to influence behaviour at a far greater scale than awareness campaigns alone.**

**I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made during the year. We’ve strengthened partnerships with organisations that share our commitment to prevention, expanded the reach of our educational work and laid important foundations for the future. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our Trustees, ambassadors, volunteers, partners and supporters. Their belief in our mission, combined with their willingness to share their expertise and influence, enables this small charity to achieve an impact far beyond its size.**

**While skin cancer rates continue to rise, I remain optimistic that we can turn the tide with our approach. Every partnership we build, every organisation we support and every child who learns how to protect themselves represents another step towards preventing future cases of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.**

I firmly believe prevention remains our greatest opportunity. By helping people change how they think, act and protect themselves outdoors, we can prevent thousands of future cases of skin cancer. That belief continues to inspire our work every day.
