‘Light for the Blind’ **St Joseph’s Hospices** Helping the Blind, Dying Destitute, and Mentally Ill of India Registered Charity No. 1085698

The Charity 'Light for the Blind' was constituted as a charitable trust in August 2000 in the city of Leeds. Its main objective is to raise funds for Fr Thomas Rathapillil's hospices for the dying destitute and a smaller number of mentally ill patients and their children. All but one of the hospices are sited in Tamil Nadu, South India, and the other in Pondicherry.

The COVID-19 situation in India is extremely severe and all our patients are vulnerable. Therefore we are currently unable to take new patients and we focus on maintaining the welfare and safety of all patients and staff.

St Joseph's Hospice, Dindigul, cares for 135 patients, a number much reduced owing to the ravages of COVID-19. This hospice is largely funded by the Indian community by donations from all over the district which help to cover meals, clothing and staff salaries.

St Joseph's Hospice, Chengleput, also keeps 139 patients safe and sound. The smallish group of children and their parents have been moved to Pondicherry with their teacher to keep them even safer in their own bubble.

St Joseph's Hospice, Tamburam, was constructed in 2014 to function as a safe holding area where desperately ill patients could be medically assessed before travelling by ambulance for further nursing at Chengleput, as appropriate.

St Joseph's Hospice, Pondicherry, is caring for 106 patients. Fr Anthony Singaraya Plash is now working with Fr Thomas and learning all necessary skills.

St Joseph's Hospice, Vellore, is one of our more recent foundations, but because of COVID-19 it has not yet re-opened for new patients. Two of our staff are settled there in caretaker roles, while two new priests from Sri Lanka are awaited - when air travel resumes.

As has always been the case, all operational expenses, with the exception of bank and accountancy fees plus other small charges, have been met by the Trustees. All monies raised are sent directly to Tamil Nadu, solely for the purposes laid out in paragraph 1.

We once again give heartfelt thanks to all our donors - individuals, churches and charitable trusts - who have so generously supported our work.
