Frfend5 of Mikoroshoni Prima
School-Annual Re
rt 2022

A reasonable yearfor all at MPS with all working hard. Forthe past couple of years the
school year in Kenya has been condensed into 4 terms Wlth shorter holidays, instead of the
usual 3 terms. This is so that the pupils can make up forthe10st 2 temis in 2020 because of
Covid.
As wlth everything around the world, costs especially of food are rislng rapldly. However Is is
still seen as essential for all the children at Mikoroshoni to receive their free meal each day.
The families living in poverty in Kenya are finding it harder and harder to be able to buy food
for even one meal a day. There has been serious drought problems in parts of Kenya and
many of the crops have failed.
Difficulties are experienced in trying to recruit teachers (2 teachers have left in the past 12
month5, for better paid posts in Government schools). A new Deputy Headteacher wa5
appointed from within the existing staff.
MPS has been in existence for 26 years and the'new buildin¢ was constructed in 2005,
However, buildings in Kenya deteriorate much quickerthan in the UK which is caused by the
very hot, dry and humid conditions. Overthe past 12 months we have had several
maintenance issues which have been expensive but necessary to repair.
MPS started the new year120231 with 272 Chlldren in school, with 25 new children in the
nursery class all selected from the very poorest families in the community.Trustees vislts to
the school have continued. with visits in April, November and March.
The charlty Is extremely grateful to the support glven by our sponsors, without this support
the chadty would not sup4ive. We have average yearly running costs of £40,000 plus and
the strain on finances is increasing. Support from our'partnerf sponsors such as Euxton
CofE Primary School is invaluable as these links are providing better understanding of
different cultures throughout both schools. MPS are also grateful of the support received
from various Rotary clubs in the UK, and expecially appreciative of the support individual
sponsors give throughout the year.
MPS are Continually lookirvx at ways in which whatever assets we have are maxlmlsed, thls
year we have opened a charity account (easy acce55) with Skn'pton BS which attracts a
reasonable amount of interest & is producing a source of extra income to the tune of £100 /
£200 extra yearly. The charit¢s yearend figures show5 an asset balance of just under £33k,
which is a decrease on previous year5 and reflects the increased costs we are having to
cover. The longer standing holding accounts. whilst paying a reasonable interest rate had to
be drawn down by £60￿ to cover increasing ¢osts.
MPS is continually looking at ways to redu￿ costs and attract more sponsors and will
continue to do so.
