THE SITE FOR CONTEMPORARY PSYCHOANALYSIS

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2021

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31st December 2021. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Training

The Site offers a psychoanalytic training which reflects the philosophy of the organisation and is for a minimum of four years. It offers critical readings of psychoanalysis and its links to European philosophy and feminist theory.

It aims at engaging with the historical, political, theoretical and clinical developments of psychoanalysis and seeks to acknowledge the socio-cultural specificity of the individual's experience.

The training is located in London and provides public or private lectures, classes, seminars and workshops.

It also provides selection and testing by theoretical and clinical written papers in accordance with the standards prescribed, of candidates wishing to become analysts.

The training has two open groups which all students join. In contrast to many other trainings, The Site does not operate year groups. People can apply to join the training at three points in the academic year - October, January and May.

Funding for the training is primarily provided by membership subscriptions, income from public lectures/workshops and training programmes and training fees.

Advertisements for training and Site events are located on the Site website and circulated via emails.

Outreach

Public meetings, seminars, conferences and workshops are held throughout the year. Part of the charitable activity of the Site enables people of limited means to access appropriate treatment. Candidates in training, and some members, forward the charitable aims of the Site by working with low-fee paying patients. In this way both patients benefit and the training of prospective analysts is progressed.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

Charitable activities

We have 14 trainees in the Saturday group and 11 in the Thursday group, with the option of taking a small number of further trainees in the Thursday group next year. The training committee does not anticipate a Pass in the next 12 months, but that Pass will open a further place on the Saturday training. There is a waiting list for training places.

The Site is running a busy low cost psychotherapy clinic which both contributes to the community and provides a source of suitable patients for trainees.

The organisation publishes Sitegeist both online and in hard copy. The most recent publication was in 2019 and there has been a pause during the pandemic which coincided with the Sitegeist committee undergoing a period of transition. The next issue will be published in Autumn 2022 with the ambition to return to regular publication thereafter.

Several members have published books as well as journal articles or book chapters.

Series of workshops for practitioners and those interested in contemporary psychoanalysis have been held. The introductory course in London continues to be popular.

In conclusion, the trustees believe that The Site is amply meeting its objectives and appears to be a popular, highly regarded and prominent psychotherapy organisation.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Reserves

Council has examined the charity's requirements for reserves in the light of the main risks to the charity, and consider the current reserve funds to be sufficient.

FUTURE PLANS

The charity plans to continue the activities outlined above in the future. The Site Constitution, policies and procedures, the Training Standards document, and Trainee Handbook make reference to and clarify the organisation of the Site. As a result of feedback from our successful five-year UKCP Organisational Member Review, as well as our own processes, this year has seen the beginnings of a thorough revision of our standards and ethics documents, including modernising our policies on Data Protection, Bullying and Harassment.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Governing document

The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust, and constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.

Recruitment and appointment of new trustees

Members of Council are elected at the AGM by a vote from membership. All Council Members are told about the obligations of being a Council Member. They are provided with:

Induction and training of new trustees

The three Officers receive a hand-over from their predecessor. New trustees meet the Chair for an induction.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE SITE FOR CONTEMPORARY PSYCHOANALYSIS

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of The Site for Contemporary Psychoanalysis ('the Company')

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 31st December 2021.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity's trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

  4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities (applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
