## **Treasurer’s report: Sarah Liley** (balance sheet at on last page)

The finances are in a much-improved position this year, notably due to the grant income received in 2021/22 and to a lesser extent, the fact that we can now once again hire out the hall for parties and regular bookings. A massive thanks must go to the Exec, especially Gill and Kev, for the time spent on so many grant applications. This puts us in a much stronger position moving forwards, given the fact that we still have a Scout Hut to run and maintain, and weren’t able to rely on any rental income in the previous financial year.

It’s also pleasing to note that we’ve been able to support community initiatives during the last year, once again hiring out the Scout Hut for the BVA Christmas Fayre, and making a donation to support the village defibrillator purchases.

As ever, please do get in touch should you have any questions about the Group’s accounts.

## **GSL report: Gilian Caine**

Returning face to face and resuming socially distanced Scouting was a tremendous challenge for both leaders and young people. Some returned to HQ having never set foot inside the building before, having moved up section, not met leaders, not had normal routines of section meetings, forgotten how to play games/where equipment was... it has been hard for all and I praise the hard work and commitment by the leaders in getting the programmes and sections back on course.

Behind the scenes the Executive Trustees also commit to the Group and as I am sure you have seen, have made sure we have an excellent well-maintained building and resources to carry out our Scouting. They are also volunteers and we appreciate anyone giving a bit of time to help on a stall, sell tickets, clear gutters, do a tip run, pick up a paint brush...

The highlight of my year has simply been seeing people again and returning to some sort of normality, the culmination of which was the Spring Fair where the sections worked alongside the Executive, the Guides and the Church to pull off a magnificent village event, thoroughly enjoyed by all. We raised £1800 which was split with the Church.

Scouting is as strong in Birkenshaw as it ever has been we could just do with more adult help to spread the load. We do however appreciate all the parents who volunteer to come along to help out at section meeting or to deliver an activity one night. Our '#skills for life programme' aims at giving children many skills to carry with them through life. Every adult has a skill whether you are a cook, sports person, decorator, mechanic, dog owner, reader, knitter, cyclist... each one of you could volunteer to run an activity just once a year which would be an absolute asset to our programme and to your children. Please think about it and either email me or speak to a leader you would not believe the feedback you would get from the young people.

## **Scouts: Justin Waite**

Since last year we have covered a number of activities towards Chief Scout’s Gold Award. These include renewing our rules and promise at the start of term. We did some taskmaster challenges, improved our first aid skills and did some

prep for an autumn hammock camp at Bradley Woods. This was our first camp back after lock down and was enjoyed by all.

We took part in the Group Bonfire at Fan Woods and also the Remembrance Parade to East Bierley, again the first parade since lockdown. This was well attended and was nice to see the Scouts on parade representing the Group. We finished off 2021 with a trip to laser tag in Bradford.

2022 started in the Scout HQ progressing our badgework and trying to get the Scouts to work as teams doing different challenges and games. We did some knot practise and the Young Leaders made pizza for the Scouts as they had learnt this skill in one of their meetings. We went on a night time chip shop hike from Birkenshaw through Oakwell and up to hill top fish and chip shop.

We paraded again at St George’s day - this was well turned out by the Scout section. We did some planning for our annual trip to Kettlewell although this was the first time we had gone in May. It was a totally different experience at that time of year and it was the first time at Wharfeside House for 95% of the Scouts who went. Scouts did leaflet drop and helped out at the Spring Fair and then prepared for the dawn 2 dusk camp organised by County at Bradley Woods. We camped with 5th Spen Valley Scouts and had a great camp. Plenty of activities for the Scouts to try and this ticked off loads of badgework for those who went. We have linked with 5th Spen Valley Scouts for the rest of the term as their Scout Leader is currently on maternity leave. We have done a range of activities together at Fan Woods and Oakwell Hall. We have done pioneering, orienteering, knife skills, fire lighting preparation and toasting marshmallows.

Currently we have 4 full time leaders and 2 occasional helpers, 2 young leaders and 22 scouts. We have 1 scout due to move to explorers in September.

## **Cubs: Steven Liley**

I’d like to thank all the members of the Exec Committee for their time and hard work this year and also, to all the Leaders who have put together such amazing programmes, for all the young people - with special thanks to both Iain and Simon as well as Will, Oliver and Megan. I think, as a Pack, we have had a great year, our first full year back after restrictions have been lifted with 3 camps in the last 12 months and 2 more planned at present for the next.

We have done some great activities and award some 200 badges and 9 Cub Scout Silver Awards. This is an amazing achievement by these young people and something they should be really proud of. We certainly are!

This year saw us award the Jasper Cook Cub award and I’m glad to say that it has been received well by the Cubs and will continue to be part of the pack indefinitely.

The pack continues to go from strength to strength with record numbers both for active Cubs and attendance but also with our waiting list. As our personal lives become uncertain due to work, covid and other factors, additional help is required. Starting from September I will be introducing a parent rota which will need to be managed by parents, simply to allow us to have those extra pair of eyes and hands.

Without this help then the programme that is planned cannot be fulfilled. I know some of you have said that you can help out occasionally, thank you for

this. If you can let me know if this is still the case then hopefully. I can get something in place so I know where we stand on an adult helper basis.

## **Beavers: Emily Hall**

Another year means another bust year for our Beavers! Over the past year we’ve been able to get back to our usual antics since restrictions have been lifted, during our Winter term we learned all about space, made rocket ships and had the return of a personal favourite of mine Easter Egg Rolling! After Easter we’ve been able to enjoy the sunshine at Fan Woods, Oakwell Hall and Bradley Woods where we have enjoyed many activities including Stream Running, Archery and learning the art of Crown green bowling (Thanks to Alan Holmes and his friends at the Bowling Club).

This year has also been the first time in 3 years we’ve been able to have a Beaver sleepover alongside the Cubs at Blackhills Campsite. I was immensely proud of the Beavers who came to camp, especially considering some had never had the opportunity to sleep away from home due to Covid.

I would like to thank Gillian and Rob for their continued support throughout the year at Beavers, I could not run the section without their help, as well as the Executive Committee for their support behind the scenes.

As you all may be aware we need more adult help at Beavers, and if anyone would like to volunteer even just a little bit of time please come and speak to me, or email me on: emily1svbeavers@outlook.com.
