The Chairman, Secretary and Sponsorship Secretary are Trustees, and in addition there is a Treasurer. The Trustees meet twice a year and have on-going communication with the Board of CCM in Manila, with the regular exchange of minutes, policy decisions and financial information. During the year, before the global lockdowns, one Trustee again spent several weeks in Manila, sharing and helping with the work and reporting back on the needs and our Treasurer also visited the CCM staff in Manila, gaining valuable first-hand experience of the work. The Trustees in the UK receive no particular induction or training, but are all Christians who are totally committed to the aims and objectives of the Trust and most of them have at some time visited, and been involved in, the work in Manila. New Trustees are chosen by current members of the Board. ## **Objectives** The objectives of the CCM UK Trust are to support the charitable work of Christian Compassion Ministries Foundation Inc., Manila, in:- - The relief of poverty, sickness and distress - The preservation and protection of health - The advancement of education - The advancement of religion, all for the benefit of the street children and indigent families of Manila. The main work of the UK Trust is therefore to fund-raise, to publicise the work as much as possible, to offer support and advice to the workers in Manila and to ensure that the objectives of the Trust are carried out in the best possible ways. ## **Achievements and Performance** The Trust organises the sponsorship of children in Manila by people in the UK, and the majority of the total giving in 2020 was received from regular Sponsors. They support children in one of three schemes:- - Firstly, the Community Programme, by which children living in the slum areas of Manila are given money for uniform, school books and a monthly allowance, all overseen by the CCM Social Workers; - Secondly, the sponsorship of homeless children who live on the streets. A dedicated Social Worker is funded for this work; - Thirdly, the sponsorship of children cared for in the CCM Children’s Homes. The total number of children sponsored as at the end of the year was: - Community – 159 (153 in 2019) - Homeless street children – 3 (2 in 2019) - In the Girls’, Boys’ and Teenagers’ Homes – 20 (20 in 2019) - Whole Home sponsors – 4 (0 in 2019) As in 2019, referrals to the Children’s Homes are still decreasing, and the turnover of children tends to be much quicker than formerly. This is mainly due to the fact that the Government preference has switched to the fostering of children, or the reconciling of children with their families wherever possible, but the Homes continue to provide an invaluable service to the children in their care and CCM staff are always concerned that children should only be returned to a safe environment. As a result of the increased turnover, CCM UK is gradually switching to sponsorship of the Homes, rather than of individual children in the Homes. The total number of sponsors and co-sponsors in the UK by the end of 2020 was 166. Gifts were also sent for Covid relief activities, for a Staff Gift Fund to encourage the Social Workers and Housemothers, for the Drop-In Centre (though this was not able to function normally during 2020) and for improvement work to the Boys’ and Girls’ Homes. Sponsors continue to take a strong personal interest in the children they support and their families, corresponding with them regularly, helping with medical expenses and sending gifts for the purchase of personal or household items, and birthday, Christmas and graduation gifts. During 2020, however, all communication had to be by email only. Gifts are also sent for the Scholarship Fund, which helps with the increased expenses of teenagers moving on to college, or in some cases, sponsors either increase their contributions or double up with others to cover these extra costs. We are still encouraged by the numbers of children from the Community programme and from the Homes who graduate in courses such as nursing and social work. This would have been impossible for them without such sponsorship. Schooling during 2020 was of course very much disrupted by the pandemic, with children not allowed to go out at all, and Homes staff had to do a large amount of home-schooling and help with on-line learning in addition to their other duties. They also occupied the children with many craft and fun activities. Visits by Social Workers to the children in the community were also very limited, although they did their best to remain in constant contact with them and financial assistance has been provided to many of the Community Programme families. The valuable work of the parents’ co-operatives was also very much disrupted. The weekly Drop-In Centre run by CCM for the homeless, where they can receive a hot meal, showers, join in games, receive counselling etc. had to be suspended, but CCM has been able to provide much needed food packs to these families on a regular basis. In addition to the support of the families and children in Manila, CCM were also able to send a team to Batangas, one of the areas badly affected by the eruption of the Taal volcano, and relief packs of food and cleaning materials were distributed to approximately 2000 families before lockdown came into operation. Over 1000 relief packs of cleaning materials were also distributed to victims of the flooding in Manila following Typhoon Ulysses, funding for this being taken from the CCM Calamity and Emergency Relief Fund. Fund-raising in the UK is encouraged by the publication of the CCM ‘Update’ magazine, the distribution of flyers presenting the work of CCM, presentations to churches and groups, articles in the Christian press, a special Christmas Gift scheme including the sale of CCM Christmas cards, and an on-line YouTube channel. The updated and improved website continues to prove invaluable for the promotion of CCM’s work, and the new centralised database system has greatly facilitated the secure exchange of information within the organisation. ## **Financial Review 2020** During 2020, the twentieth year of operation for CCM UK, the total income for the year was £180,076. This figure compares with income in 2019 of £153,127. The increase in gifts for 2020 was £26,949. Donations to the General Fund during 2020, which included a legacy of £35,000, were £64,360; up from £39,880 in 2019. Donations for the Homes were £27,578 in 2019 and in 2020 they were £26,798. Income for the Community Fund rose from £50,799 in 2019 to £52,118. Contributions to the Fund for the Homeless were £4,293 in 2019 and £4,219 in 2020. Tax recovered on donations under the Government’s Gift Aid scheme totalled £16,121 for the year. Interest on the Trust’s deposit and current accounts in 2020 was £1; the interest received in 2019 was £3. Expenditure on publicity, which includes printing of the quarterly ‘Update’, was £1,017 in 2020, which showed a slight fall on the previous year’s expenditure of £1,091. Office expenses fell from £159 in 2019 to £92 in 2020. Postage costs, mainly incurred for the quarterly mailing of our Update, decreased from £2,411 in 2019 to £1,460. This decrease was a result of a reduction, from four to three, in issues of the Update published. There were no deputation costs in 2020. Due to the pandemic and resulting restrictions, Trustees’ meetings were held virtually, using donated Zoom slots, therefore no Governance costs were incurred. In 2019, £352 was spent on Governance. The charity incurs no payroll costs, as all those working on its behalf in the UK, such as the trustees and the Treasurer, give their services voluntarily. The Trust’s bankers are CAF Bank, while an independent examination of the annual accounts was carried out by Mrs Dawn Brookes.. ## **Reserves Policy** During the year, all of the income received, less expenses and the balance in hand, was transferred to CCM in the Philippines. The balance of the COIF account now remains at £500, with no movements of funds taking place during the year. ## **Data Protection** All confidential information regarding sponsors’ details are kept by the Sponsorship Secretary and the Treasurer on a personal computer, to which only they have access, or in locked cabinets. The information is only ever divulged to fellow Trustees or to the CCM office in Manila. A central password protected web based database has been developed by one of the UK trustees. This records supporters’ contact details and can only be accessed by authorised staff in Manila, the USA, Australia and the UK. The CCM UK trustees have reviewed procedures and made adjustments to comply with GDPR, which came into force in May 2018. ## **Risk Management** The Trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed, in particular financial, operational and reputational, and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate our exposure to major risks. We are once more grateful to God, that despite the worldwide pandemic and ensuing restrictions, He has enabled us to demonstrate His love to some of the street children and indigent families of Manila, providing shelter, education, livelihood training and loving care.
