## **District Commissioners Report 2023-24**

Across the District it has been a full on, activity and exciting fun filled year. One of the key events for 2023 was the County Challenge Camp at Bramham in July 2023. Around 400 Beavers & cubs, Scouts and Explorers attended from Friday night to Sunday on a fun packed camp with numerous activities.

This year the number of young people registered with the Scout association in January this year on the annual census figures for the district has slightly risen again to 940 from 811 last year.

The break down is as follows - 259 Beavers (216 last year), 314 Cubs (288 last Year), 233 Scouts (220 last year), 81 Explorers (79 last year) and 4 Network, (8 last year).

The number of registered adult members in the district has risen this year to 314 from 291 adults in 2023. This is due in part to groups recruiting more sectional assistants in order to support the number of appointed leaders.

The total membership in the district for 2024 is 1254 members (1102 last year). Overall Young people grew by just over 15% and the district grew by 13%. We are continuing regain the losses we encountered due to the pandemic and the signs for the coming year looking good for a further overall growth.

Interest in the young people wishing to join the organisation remains high with daily enquiries dropping in to inboxes and waiting lists at groups continue to reflect this.

We have still struggled again this year to fill some of the roles across the district team, roles Particularly the District Secretary and DESC roles. Other members across the trustee board have stepped up and helped out when needed with the secretary role, we do however still need someone to help with this admin role. In general the DESC role has been picked up by myself but unfortunately I feel I may not full filled it to its full and for this reason there is no separate explorer report. The explorer units are however doing well, all providing a great program of activities for their young people and I think this is shown by the increase of Explorer scouts across all the units. It is hoped in the coming year we can increase the explorer provision across the district to allow more young people to carry on their scouting journey and for more young people to join.

The district team has worked well together over the last year with Simon Richards continuing to support the Beaver section, Joshua Hammond - Assistant District Commissioner (Cub Section Support). Jeni Burrell - Assistant District Commissioner (Scout Section Support) all creating some exciting and well attended District events.

Credits also go out to Chris Stead (ADC Activities) Narrowboat, Nick Fox (ADC Water Activities) Jacob Barnes & Lucy Huggins (Youth Commissioners)

I want to thank them for full filling these much, needed support roles. Thank you to each and every one of you.

I want to thank all the other support members across the district in the various teams for their continued support and dedication.

It is appropriate to salute all the fantastic leaders, section assistants and helpers across the district for their continued commitment, dedication, time and hard work they all show to their groups and to the young people of Wakefield. – Thank you each and every one of you.

I know many this year have received Young Leader, long service awards and for many have completed their adult training Wood badges. Many of which I have had the pleasure of presenting - Well done to everyone who has received an award this year.

## Charity Number 1084038

Thank you also to the Trustee Board, everyone on the Campsite and Narrowboat sub committees, my District Team and the County Team who have continued to work tirelessly in supporting myself and the whole district over another difficult year and to anyone else who has supported or helped me over the last year. Thank you.

As move even closer to the coming changes in scouting with new role titles and descriptions and working in a new team structure we look forward to the future, there has already been some challenges and there will be still some hurdles to get over but as always, we are scouts and we will rise to the challenge.

The hope is that these changes will help with volunteer recruitment and in that we can provide more exciting evening meetings activities and camps for our young people of Wakefield.

Like last year I ask in the coming year that we challenge ourselves with one of the following.

- **Individual** – Recruit a parent, friend, work colleague, relative or former member to fill any adult role, large or small.

- **Events:** Encourage groups and sections to get involved with both District & County events.

- **Team –** Work with one another rather than against each other and utilise or engage with one another.

- **Encourage –** Offer support and guidance rather that criticism.

## _A quote –_

“The real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people.”

## _Lord Robert Baden Powell_

Thank you everyone.

Adrian Cooper District Commissioner.
