Chair’s Report
Thank God for our sense of humour and maybe irony! I say this because I’ve recently re-read last years Chair report and it began “ I think it would be an understatement to say that 2019 has been a challenging year.” Oh if only I had known then what we know now!!!!
You don’t need me to tell you that 2020 was a year like no other!
Having only just moved to our new offices in the Marlene Read Centre we were suddenly imprisoned in our homes, churches closed, schools closed and possibly for the first time since its conception Heartland Youth for Christ was unable to operate. Indeed, nationally, Youth For Christ was stopped in its tracks.
It was with sad hearts that the trustees finally admitted there was no choice but to furlough our staff – a choice made mainly in consideration of their mental and spiritual welfare. There was a welcome but brief resumption of some work at the end of summer but this was short lived as we entered a second lockdown.
Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t all been bad news. As we know, God wasn’t taken by surprise in all this! In fact, never One to miss an opportunity, He has used this

time to shake His church in a way never seen before. He has used this time to get His message out online, to get us all delving deeper into His word and in many ways He has been refining our faith.
But there’s no doubt that while some have sadly lost loved ones, many more have been afraid, many have suffered loneliness and our children in particular have had their lives turned upside down.
Now more than ever, the good news of the Gospel is needed in our schools and homes and the work of Heartland Youth for Christ is critical in getting that message across. A message of Hope when all seems hopeless.
As far as our team is concerned, the future is wonderfully bright. We are all looking forward to getting back into our schools, restarting our after school clubs and looking at new ways to introduce young lives to our Saviour.
Furlough has protected our precious funds and supporters have continued to be generous. Zoom meetings have been a literal God send as far as us older folk are concerned. No need to leave warm homes on a wintry evening – even so we are keen to return to face-to-face gatherings, especially for prayer purposes.
So with renewed strength and refreshed vision we are looking to the future with enthusiasm.
Sarah will be telling you all about the new Genesis project, some training we’re hoping to provide for potential youth workers and our new member of staff – another Sarah – as well as bringing you up to date with other aspects of our work and plans for the future.
Paul writes in his second letter to Timothy “Through the Power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you”. This is our continued purpose at Heartland Youth For Christ, that standing in God’s strength we will protect, safeguard and preserve the truth of His Gospel and faithfully share it with those He puts in our way.
I hope and pray that you will be encouraged by what you hear today and will continue to support us in the coming year.
Andrea Kellett
