Westwood & Coldhurst Women' s Association

End of Year Report 2020/2021

Welcome

It has been an incredibly challenging year as from the onset of this financial year saw us going into a nation-wide lockdown due to COVID-19. Despite having our spaces equipped and ready to deliver exciting new classes and courses, we had to make quick adaptations on supporting our beneficiaries. Unlike many other organisations who were furloughed, the WCWA team was out at the forefront and working directly with the community in the early days when little was known about the virus.

Like many up and down the country staff predominantly worked remotely and brought in when necessary.

Weekly phonecalls were carried out to ensure good mental health and wellbeing of the women and girls, as the lockdowns were particularly tough, particularly with the uncertainty. It was also an opportunity to ask for updates on the latest legislations which staff were able to pass on the information to them. Sadly, one of the first people in Greater Manchester who passed from COVID-19 was the husband of one of our service users. We were able to support her by providing the family with essential items (food and toiletries for a week) as they were isolating and could not shop, and also refer them to a bereavement service which helped families pay for funeral costs.

As keyworkers, our staff and volunteers provided essential services and support to, not only the local community, but across the borough and we are very proud of them all for having taken the risks for doing so.

Our thoughts and prayers go to all those who have been affected and lost loved ones to COVID-19 and I hope this report gives you an insight into the works carried out by WCWA and the number of local people we've managed to help and support throughout this difficult time.

REPORT TO THE MEMBERS ON THE UNAUDITED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS OF WESTWOOD AND COLDHURST WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION

YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2021

I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2021 set out on pages 4 to 6.

Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

The charity’s trustees consider an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the 2011 Act, and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility as independent examiner to:

Basis of Independent Examiners Report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the Directions given by the Charity commission.

An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items of disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters.

The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

Independent Examiners Statement

I have completed my examination for the year ended 31 March 2021.

I can confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

** Workers Education Association had an overspend of £6,323 in this financial period. This has been re-imbursed to the charity and paid back in the next financial year. As such this will show in the fund analysis in the year ending 31[st] March 2022 accounts.

*** Big Lottery Fund (BLF) awarded over a 3 year period.

Opening and closing balances shown as negative figures due to the timing of payments made to the charity where there is a continued spend on projects. The accounts are prepared on a ‘Receipts and Payments’ basis, with scheduled payments made by BLF shown in the financial statements (accounts) as at the date ‘actually’ received at the bank. (Payments are made throughout the year, with a payment being made in April after the 31[st] of March year ended date, and where expenditure is on going for the project, hence the timing differences being reflected in the opening and closing balances for this funding).
