## **Annual Report 2021/2022**
Last year I wrote the strangest annual report I had ever written as we had only managed to put on one concert. I ended it hoping that things would get better, and they have. This season we have put on all eight concerts and a fundraising concert with the Dementia Friendly choir. In addition we have run and funded a highly successful Bursary for Island music students. Here we are at the End of Season Meeting and Concert having celebrated the 75[th] birthday year of WWAA in fine style, looking forward to next season with confidence. This occasion used to be our Annual General Meeting but as a result of our rejig of the constitution in 2019, the AGM is now held amongst the Trustees only. This gives our Treasurer more time between the end of the financial year and the AGM to prepare the accounts and have them scrutinised.
The season began in September with a violin and piano recital by Charlie Lovell-Jones and Julian Chang which seems a long time ago. We started cautiously with restricted numbers and a request that everyone wore masks: we have gradually increased the numbers and kept the windows open and I hope that no-one suffered as a result, from covid or cold. We hope to be able to reopen the bar, serve tea and coffee and run the raffle next season. It is wonderful to be returning to normal, and the best thing is hearing live music.
Uptake of Season Tickets was understandably down last season as people were wary of crowded spaces but audience numbers have grown as we have increased capacity and we hope that we will get back to pre-covid numbers before too long. Returning season ticket holders can renew tonight and new applicants should speak to Jackie Warner. The Treasurer's report will be available for you to read on the website after the AGM but I can at this point say that the remarkable thing is that despite lower income, we have remained solvent despite this difficult time. This is all thanks to the enormously generous sponsorship we have received from you the audience, thank you so much.
We put out appeals for financial help, a general one to replenish our finances after a year in which we had paid all the artists who could not perform, yet had no income. The other appeal, as generously supported as the previous one, was for sponsorship of the 75[th] Birthday gala concert, the Mozart Clarinet Quintet and Schubert Octet in March. This was the highlight of the season for many but there have been plenty of others, the last concert, Mayumi Kanagawa on violin and Viller Valbonesi on piano stands out.
You have copies of next season’s brochure on your tables; please take a few and give them to people who may not be aware of what goes on here every month. Some artists are those who were unable to come last year, Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley on horn and piano and the Northern Chords Piano Trio for instance, but we will also have some welcome return visits from A4 Brass at Christmas and Isle of Wight star pianist Thomas Luke, who will by then be a student at the Royal Academy of Music.
There will be some changes amongst the hard working band of Trustees. Sandy Toms has decided to retire after 39 years as a Trustee but is nobly going to continue to staple the programmes and mull the wine at Christmas. I wonder how many cups of tea and coffee she has poured over almost 40 years. In pre computer design days the programmes used to have her lovely design with a treble clef on. Thank you Sandy for all your work and support. Claire Sharples joined us seven years ago and took over looking after the piano from Joan Gregson. She has also run four enormously successful bursaries, some of the fruits of this year’s one you heard earlier. Being able to help Island music students financially is one of the very best aspects of WWAA to my mind. We are very grateful to Claire for her immense efficiency, enthusiasm and hard work. At our AGM we will elect a new Trustee who will be known to many of you, Richard Wilkins is joining us all the way from Ryde and we shall all benefit from his musical ears and expertise and knowledge of Island music making. As you have heard, he is making himself very useful already.
We have many more people to thank, amongst others Alan Benns who lights us so professionally, Helen Gibbs at Totland Parish Office who sells tickets so efficiently, Richard Leonard who with his fine tooth comb inspects our accounts, Chris Court our incomparable webmaster, Michael Gibbins for his artistry, Debbie McAteer and Ray Groves the ever helpful Memorial Hall staff, Wightlink for subsidising ferry travel for our musicians, Sandy Hunt for his programme notes, Julia Sheard who produces floral glories every concert. I would like to thank the Trustees who have kept the Association going throughout these difficult times and stepped in seamlessly when I had to bow out earlier in the year. Such a successful season is a testament to the quality of our musicians, the teamwork of the Trustees and the enthusiastic support and generosity of you the audience, thank you.

## **WWAA Treasurer’s report, year ended 30 Apr 2022**
## **Preamble**
After a year in which Covid-19 allowed us to produce only one concert, it was a huge relief to start the new season in September 2021. Continuing Covid restrictions mandated caution, but as the season progressed we were able to lift many restrictions and our audience grew rapidly. Good ticket sales and massive support in the form of donations made it possible to run the Bursary once again and still maintain a small surplus.
## **State of finances**
Ticket sales of £17,357 were remarkably good considering that seating was reduced owing to Covid restrictions.
Artists costs rose, owing in part to the cost of the Octet who performed on our 75[th] anniversary. The year’s total was about £1,000 more than the annual average before Covid. We have been exceptionally fortunate in the value of donations received.
We have a surplus of £6,179 and cash assets have risen to £56,831.
## **Comments**
## _Expenditure_
The year’s expenditure was broadly in line with previous years – no exceptional payments were made.
## _Income_
Extraordinarily, the £12,402 of donations received this year is very close to last year’s deficit of £12,824, which resulted from our decision to pay contracted artists who were unable to perform owing to Covid.
## _Reserves_
Owing to exceptional donation income it has been possible to rebuild our reserves: indeed we have felt it wise to increase the artist reserve and are very pleased to boost the Bursary reserve from £3,000 to £5,000. It is remarkable that we have been able to do this in the space of one year.
## **The Future**
We last increased ticket prices at the beginning of the 2019/20 season and they remained unchanged last year. Whilst performance was good this year we must keep an eye to the future; accordingly for the coming season concert tickets will cost £16, with an on-line booking fee of £1, and a season ticket £100.
In addition to the generous donations which have enabled us to rebuild our reserves we have promises of sponsorship for some future concerts. In addition, a high proportion of donations attract gift aid and we expect a generous cheque from HMRC in the coming months. We have no advanced warning of exceptional costs in the coming year, but remain cautious.
