2023 Show President's Report
Aft￿ a three-year lead-in to die role, I was privileged to be your President for 2023.
I had the best dayl A packed itinerary ¢xpertly constructed by Sally.
When Neil asked me ty be his Vice President. I was both siirpri5ed And thrilled, At that point I had
been on the main committee for 20 years and in niy i8t]orwKe, l thought I had a pretty good
knowl¢dge of how the show W0￿¢d. How wionE was17
I regard my tbree-y¢ar lead-in as a well spent P4pprenti¢eship. By attending each sub- coiwnittee
me¢ting I gained a fitst-hand insiglit into how each sub-coillniitiee works and moff importsntly just
how M￿]Y people giv¢ lime, experienLY and eJJ¢r8y ensuting the smooth ivnning and succe￿ of
each siilFcommittee.
With this in niind and on behalf of the Trustees I would like to exp￿SS niy heartfelt thanks to all sub-
conunittee Chai￿ and mernbers, slewards, exhibitOIE¥ judges and sponsor3 Witl)out whose support we
couldn't run oui fantastic sliow.

to thank my son iti law for ￿TrngIng Peter's visit to the show, foy without his help Peter would never
have been booked.
If I Can also echo Neil's confesslon from the previous year, I had never visited the Dog Show in my 23
years on the conunittee, I was so impressed with thc high standard of cntries ￿)d camaraderie trth￿en
owners which made a unique atmosph￿￿.
Finally, l Ivoiild like to thank Duncan for the support and ¢iiGourn8&iient he gave me as my Vice
President, it made my Presidential year all the tnore enjoyable.

The obJ￿l of the Society is the promotion of agri¢ull)Jre for the publlc t¢n¢fit, particularly in
N¢wporl. Shropshiir and the surrounding district. It is the aitn of the Society to promote agricultur4
principally through the holding of an Annu81 Show. The Tnistees have ref¢￿ed to the giiidan¢e
contained in the Charity Commissions g¢n¢rdk guidance on public b¢nefit ￿len reviewknB their
aims and obje¢tives and in planning ￿tUtE activities. That has been no material change in the
)licy since the last i'eport.
The Society ain)s to hold a first-cl&ss Agriculttwal Show eaGh year. The Tiwstees and Main
Conlmittee are conscious of the need to ￿￿]ntaIn the Show's traditional qualities Bs an exhibition
for the best of local agLiculture and Qommerce, combined with ￿￿vIdIng a high￿ValIty day's
enteitainment for a 8Towing local populatio￿ who havg much wider inteiests than purely rui'al
pursuits.
The ownership of Ch¢twynd Deer Path is intsgral to the Society's objectives artd activities. The
Deer Park offers an outstanding venue and with the Society's ￿)lICY of contiuuous investment lo
improve its facilities and sofr 0perntiO￿ the Society hos a w0nd¢i￿1 assel to carefully develop for
th¢ fjJtur¢ demands of the Annual Show, selected other ¢vents and for cduc8tional purposes.
Achhevements and performAnee
The So¢i¢ty's educational facility at Chetwynd Deer Park, "The Lodge" fomially opened in May
2014, continues to be a great sii¢cess, providing many members of local schijols and other
educational establishmellts an oppOrti￿]ty to enjoy this uniqu¢ and beauti￿1 venue. Jn the period
under ￿VieW, Chetwynd Deer Path and The Lodge hosted education&l visils for 1,473 children fi'om
local Schools. Private ¢hild¢are proYid¢i3 used the Forest Area, Nvhieh really helped tt) support the
local commutiity post the Covid 19 pandeo)ic. enabling children to continue to leam and develop
valuable social skills with friends outdoors. Chetwynd Park also welcomed back 10¢01 senioi
schools compcting in county ¢ross Gountry Tunning events

The Society continues ils scheme to sponsor a student at Harper Adams University, The 2023
scholarship was &w8Yded to Sophie Vernon. The Society will announce the 2024 sclK>lar in the iiew
yeay prior to the AGM.

Financial review and Mults for the year
Delailedffnanclal revlew
The financial results for the period are set out on pages I 110 20. The Society has ￿Orded a net
increas¢ in fiinds of £4Q,463 in 202212022 £185.799 decrease). This is mad¢ up of.-
l. a net operational oufflow of £4.012 (2022 £25.183 inllow); and
2. gains on Investll￿nt assets amounting to £44.476 (202210&8es of £210,981).
Total income amounted to £355,362 (2022 £302,655) tolal eXpend[tU￿ amounted to £359,375
(2022 £277,473).
Show income was £217,402 {2022 £210,217), a small incr¢a% due to higher ti¢ket prices and
sponsorship with slightly lower show attendanc¢. Show expenditure was £180J75 (2022 £149,291)
which was driven by acr05S the board cost increases.
Incorne from the estate increased to £80270 (2022 £47,583) due to the 12-rnonth period vs 9
onths in 2022. Net investment income w&8 £48,298 for the 12-month period compared to £37,814
for the 9 month8 to S¢pt¢mber 2022. Ov¢r the same wiod th¢ So¢i¢ty's other costs were £169.609
(2022£121,142j.
The investment portfolio eA￿ed the period at £1,667,926 (2022: £1,606,769). The increase 15
explailled in the Investm¢nt T¢Vi¢W below.
As a result of the above movements. the Society's totsl net assets irtcirased to £2.589,861 (2022:
£2,549.398).
Inv&TtnwiÈ revlew
The past 12 months have been parlicularly chall¢nging for mark¢ts ￿ uncertainly around
infiation and where interest rates will peak h85 caused in¢reased volatility. W¢ have seen
major central banks aggressively incTeasc interest rates in efforts to bring infiation under
control. In the UK the BaDk of England base rate in¢reased from 2.250/(s to its cunEnt level of
5.25%. The dr￿lIatI¢ increase An interest rates has been a headwind for both Fx)nd and equity
tnaTkcts. Pl￿8Ing1Y, as we appear to be at (or at least near) peak rates, we have seen more
stability lately and better broad performanc¢ of the investment mark¢ts. Falling infiation
continues to infiu¢n¢e market direction as it improves the chances of centsai banks turning
dovish.
As a result, the investment portfolio delivered a total return (incom¢ plu5 capitsl 8ainlLoss) of
s,8￿/0 for the peiiod under review. This is below the Risk Category 6 benchmark relum of
8.680/0 over the same period and ahead of the peer group Asset Risk Cornsultants (ARC)
Charities Steady GrOTr￿h index tetum of 5.120/0. The ARC index is mad¢ up of over 4.000
charity portfoli03 from 35 differBnÈ iDvestrn6nt managers* providing a good con]paTison to the
F¢rfornwice of our pcers oF¢rating within a similar lev¢1 of investment rtsk.

Res¢rve8 policy
The T￿￿teeS have considered the level of res¢rves h¢ld by the So¢Aety at 30 S¢pteiiiber 2023. As
explained in note 8 to the fu￿nClaI statements, the Society's Pemiancnt Endowment Fwx] can only
be used for speclfic purpo8e$, whereas the Re8erve Fund c4n be used for any purpose within the
s￿Iety's objects. The Society needs to build up its Keserve Fund both to enable il to meet its long-
m alti￿ and to genernte sutfi¢i¢nt investment inwme to finance its charitsble objectives. The
Trustees have examined tbe necds, Tisks and challeng¢$ faced by the Soclety in both the short and
n￿dIUM tenn, along with relevant financial budgets.

fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with these requirements. We bclicve that
the audit evidence we have Obtain￿ is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our
opinion.
Conclusions relating to going ¢oncern
In auditing the financial statements, w¢ have ￿nduded that the tn￿te¢s, use of the going concern
basis of accounting in th¢ pr¢paration of the financial statements is appropriate. Based on the work
we hav¢ perfonned, we have nol identified any material uncertainties relating to events or
conditions that, individually or Collectively, may cast significant doubt on the charity's ability to
continue as a going concern for a period of at le￿t twelve months from when the financial

DEFRA regulations, and health & safety regulations. Our tests includeAI agreeing the financia]
statement disclosures to underlying supporting documentation, inspection of minutes of m¢¢tings
held and enquiries with management.
There are inherent lirnitations in the audit procedures des¢ribd above and, the further removed non-
complianc¢ with laws and regulations is from the events and transactions reflected in the financial
