Broadening of access to historical
writng:
- Contnued investment in our digital magazine,
History Workshop (formerly History Workshop
Online). HW is commited to making historical
writng accessible and engaging for both
historians and the public. Investment in the past
year includes appointment of three new HW
Editorial Fellows (in additon to one contnuing)
and investment in technology, web hostng and
the creaton of podcasts. Since 2020, the
website had a monthly average of 24,000
visitors. By May 2023 the website passed the
two million visitor mark, and (with more
frequent episodes on ofer) the podcast drew
over 11,000 listeners, its highest number to
date.
- Periodic producton of Virtual Special Issues
making HWJ content freely accessible for six
months.
- Collaboraton with and support for the Raphael
Samuel History Centre’s regular events in public
history
- OUP’s philanthropic initatves have meant that
upwards of 7000 insttutons in developing
natons have access to the journal.
- Number of monthlyviewers ofjournal artcles|
has been steadily increasing since 2017, and the journal’s articles are being accessed by readers in countries around the globe.

these funds in order to beter meet our
charitable objectves, primarily by broadening
access to history through further investment in

meant that we have run a slight defcit; however
we ended 2022 with a slight surplus of £2946
and 2023 with a larger surplus of £11,759. We

**Respective** The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in **responsibilities of** accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). **trustees and examiner**
The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Act and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,
- to follow the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Act, and
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention
**Basis of independent** My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given **examiner’s statement** by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
**Independent** In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my **examiner's statement** attention (other than that disclosed below *) which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
- accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act or
- the accounts do not accord with the accounting records
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
