Review of activitie6
Southdown Nursery has had an excellent year. Demand for places is high, arKI the register of children has been
full. We've been fortunate to receive grants to invest in our facililies and infraslruGture and have run
successful fundraising community events. as well as three 'Paint and Play. volunteer maintenance momings.
The Nursery ¢onlinues to provide significant support to our children and families. often filling gaps lefl by
diminishing local serwces. For example, staff support families with signposting and referrals to relevant services
and acts as an advocate if English is an additional language or they are vulnerable. Since the Covid pandemi
wè rectsgnise thal children are coming to nursery with greater needs. Staff have taken steps through training and
working with other settings to 'bridge the gap, and provide extra support in the following areas - communication
and language, personal, social and emotional development and physical development. The Nursery manager
attends several professional networks induding a to￿1 Early Years Leaders Netwotk and SENCO (Special
Educational Needs Coordination) Network. The trustees are particularty proud of our highly skilled. committed
and longstanding staff members who make the nursery Ihe fantastic Pla￿ it is.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES (INCORPORATING THE DIRECTORS. REPORT)
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2024
The Nursery has an amazing outside space y￿th large sandpit, sensory garden, digging area, veg patch and an
outside classroom. These faalities support Forest School practices that build children's selfosteem, confidence,
independence, creativity and physical and emotional wellbeing. We have Iwo Forest School trained members
of slaff which allows us to weave forest school prinapals and activilies into our daily plans and routines. We
have enhanced the space with a wooden climbing frame, donated to us by a friend of the nursery and cleverly
adapted to meet the needs of small chihjren by a father of one of our children.
This yearwe have benefitted from a generous grant from Ihe Wilson memorial Trust for new tablets. These allow
staff lo document children's activities and development and share these wilh families using the newly
implemented Tapestry. software. Tapestry is a childhood education platform that provides tools to support strong
relationships with families. document each child's unique leaming ioumey and streamline monitoring and
reporting processes.
The Wi5son Memorial Twst grant has a150 allowed us to invest in new wooden building blocks which children
use daily to create towers, pirate ships, trains. cars. t￿lIding sites and obstade courses. The blocks support
several areas of development induding problem solving, imaginative play. self-expression, malhs skill and social
and emotional skills.
Southdown Nursery has also been chosen to be part of Co-op Community Fund (starting in October 2024} which
when awarded in 2025. will be used to replace our summer hous8S to enhance the outside leaming spac8.
The Nursery community has u)ntinued its ca18ndarof activiti8s including 'Paint and Play. maintenance momings,
Halloween party raising £260. and Summer Fair raising £779. These events provide families with an opportunity
to connect with each other, support the Nursery through volunteering their time and fundraise for much needed
resources.
Future plan8
As the Govemment rolls out the Early Years Entitlement expansion, we are regisleting more tsvo years olds than
in the past. This has implications on staffing, activities and facilities. We are adapting the setting by investing in
new equipment and making adaptations to meet the needs of this younger cohort.
Future projects indude updating our website to make il easier for families to use, replacing our old playhouses
and improving the ac￿ssibilty of our garden for year-round use.
Financial review
During the year. the nursery generated a total income of £142,988 {2023: £122,994), wth a surplus of £7.174
12023= deficil of £3.156).
ReseNes policy
It is Nursery policy that fina￿la1 affairs are maintained wthin a tight budget approved by ttustees. The nature of
the NurseWs activities detennines the reseNes flmd and other assets are held to cover unexpected shortfalls
on the Statement of Financial Activities. At the year end, f￿e reserves tolalled £22,28912023: £12,460). The
Trustees consider thal if there was significant drop in short terTn funding, they will be able to continue the
Nursery's aclivilies while consid&ration is giv8n to additional ways in which funds may be raised. The Charity is
therefore acting in line with the Reserves Policy.
