UK or other centrcs approved by Chain of Hope for such treatments.

wh¢r¢ they do not exist.

This linancial year b¢￿n in 'lockdown' due to the Covid-19 pand¢tnic which meant that the charity's
operatio]]s were on hold. Both overseas mission5 and the tsaTt5fer of children through our ICRP were not
possible for the first part of this year due to travel re5tri¢tions and our valued volunteer health¢are professionals
being hard at work in th6 fjght against Covid-19 in the NHS. 73Yo of.staff wcr¢ put on furlough initially durin8
the pande]niE whilst thc charity's leadership looked ai ways lo still rcach patients overseas with heart disease
during this unpreccde￿td time.

Ethlfrpl*: our goal for this year was to SUPPOrt six local missions to tr¢al chtldren young advlts..
We rnall￿ed to support th¢ local tcam at the Ethiopian Cardia¢ Centre with two local missions by providing
Lonsun￿bI¢s and supplies. This result¢d in an anJazin8 kntal of 54 patients b¢ing operated on. Of the 54 children
treated, 25 received open heart surgery procedures and 29 children wcre treated in ihe caiheter lab with
interventional procedur¢5.

Wc achieved the goal of supporting thc sustainablc surgical work of th¢ Uganda Heart In&titu¢e by pgrtnering
wilh Rotsry Foundation. We had contributed S50,000 ai the tnd of the previous finHn¢ial y¢dr which wab
matched to the va]u¢ of500/o by Rotaiy Foundation. increasing our impacl (0 $75,(M)O. Thi5 $75,(K)O ellabled 21
patients to be OPETat¢d on by th¢ local team Jft 2021 durins lockdown. In addition the grant cnabled a sc¢ond
anacsthctic machine to be purchased tor thc cath¢tcr lab in the Uganda Heart Instityt¢ so that thc local teatn ean
operate in both surgi¢81 theatres and the ¢athet¢r lab simultsneously. This helped to fulfil our goal of supponing
susrainability by building local capacity.
Aswan: Our goal for this year was to provid¢ £250,(K)O worth of equipment, consumablcs or supplies to the
Aswan Heart C¢ntr¢.
We surpassed our 8oYII with the supply of £273,809 wosth of ￿nSuMable8 and equipmertl in the following WAYS..
We supplied Covid testing kits to ertable the establishment of rigorous testlTi8 procedures protocol
wbich has kept the Centre's Staff.%afc and enabled the Centre to continu¢ working during th¢ pandemic.
We continued funding and supplying vital consumables and heart valves nxessary for the Centre to
continue its surgeries.
We 5uppli¢d 72 pacem8k¢r4 devices & heart valves lor use in children and adults.
Refu%ee project: Our goal was to support the treatment of 40 refvgee children in L£banon and Jordan..
Due to the ¢risis in L£banon last sun]m¢r, as a result of the cxplosion, this was not P088ibl¢ but we did rn&nage
to fund the tre&imeni of 43 childrcn of Syrian, l£banesc and Palestinian ori¥in.
ICRP: Our goal was to resume the ICRP programme and build up to two patients per month by the end of the
financial year..
By the end of the financial year we had successfully rcncwcd collaboration with our ICRP ceTrtres in Aswan and
BarLelon8 and w¢rc tr¢ating two patient p¢r month. Elcvcn patients received trcatment through our ICRP during
thc financial ycar. with 13 patients in total having been trdnsferred for mcdical treatment.
RwAnda: our goal last year was to gUPPOrt th¢ d¢v¢lopment of a dedicated eardiac centre for Rwanda..
Chain of Hopc rntcred into a grant agreement durirlg this financial year with the Rwanda Heart Carc &
Research Foundation for the specific purpose of building a publit cardiac ¢entr¢ in Kigali, Rwanda. A total of
£677.000 had been raised by Chain of Hop¢ ovcr th¢ last five years, pledged to the construction of a dedicated
¢8rdia¢ unit. This is a joint endesvour with other NGOS and thc Egyptign Ministry of Forci8n Affairs who are
all donating funds for the building, intcmal equipment or othcr support costs.

The past yeAr has bcen a difficult environment in which to fi]ndraisc, how¢ver we focussed our encrgics on
d¢v¢loping online furkdrAiAing. In the first pNrt of the Iinancial y¢ar we ran 8¢v¢rNI digitP41 appeals during
lo¢kdown which g￿nerated £104k. We were pleased with this initial result and have been trying to expaTHI
existin¥ donor ¢ngag¢m¢nt &s well and exploring how to increase our digital reath.
Ow annual Gala Bail had to be cancelled due to Covid-19 re8trictions. How¢v¢r. w¢ orgonised a virtu
ndraiser in its place which was hosted by Sky News PTes¢nl¢r, Jonathan Samuels and Lord Jeffrey Archcr.
Th¢ hard work of our srnall but dedicated team tt>gether with our Gala Ball committee paid off we raised
£1.062. 976 (ineludiftg gifts in kind).
Tbe retum on investment for the virtual fimdraiser was extremely good with th direct cost of only £46k.
Additionally, a numb¢r of new lljajor donors and supporters were recruited tbrougb this event.
Our forecasts for 2021122 predict an uncertain year for income generation th]¢ to thc ongoing global Covid-19
crisis. The UK recession will undoubtedly take its toll on the charity sector howcyer rhe past financial year

The Board of Trustccs is responsible for the govcmance and financial management of the Ctmrity. We aim to
hold quarterly Board M￿tingS. Trustees decide alld agree policy and approve a framework for the charity,
delivery of activities. Day to day management is delegated to the Chief Executive Officer.
Tru3te¢$ are r¢-appoillted every four years and during this financial ￿ar the meTnOrand￿rn and Articles were
mended so that ihe ¢harily no ltsrger requires an AGM to be held tu prlipuse and appoinl new Truslees.
Nominations are made at TTUStee meetings and are con.%idered carefi]Ily. Where po￿lb[C Trustec p051tion.% are

The Ttustees have made a commitment to dEversify the Board's expertise and two female Tn￿teeS have been

was fornjally appointed to be Treasurer on l FcbTuary 2021. Th¥ second new TnJst¥e, Professor Vibeke
Hjortdal, also joined ub during the second part of this financial year. Professor Hjortdal is a Prtsfessor of
Cardiothoracic surgery and has been involved in the eharity'g overseas missions for nearly ten years. Based in
Denmark, ProleSSOT Hjortdal is taking on a Tol¢ to Improve the eharity's medical data record keeping and
analysis.
Professor de l£val resigned as a Tru5tce thiring the financial year du¢ lo ill h¢alth but remains in an Honorary
position as Vice President.
Personnel
In April 2020, 730/0 of our staff w¢r¢ pla¢¢d on furlough as our tharitable operaiions were curtail¢d due to the
pandemic. The CEO took the l￿d in taking a 20Yo voluntary pay cut and the remaining senior management teaTll
Ibo took 10/0 pay cuts.
As op¢rJtion3 continued to b¢ minirnal artd fundraising was hard to predict, a seri¢8 of redundancies were
wiforts]natcly made during the summcr of 2020. A further two members of staff left the organjsativn for otheT
cmployment and one member of the teaTn reduced her contract to two days p¢r week. Furlough￿ staff were
brou¥htbaLk part time as their 8re85 Of op¢rdtson increa8ed in the yecond six months of the year.
Pay seales are worked out according to management or administration levels within the organisation, with
¢onsid¢ration given to perforniance review and length of service. Perfonnance reviews are conducted annually
although a continual look ar objectiv¢8 occurs through the year. The Chief Executivc Officer's perfornmncc and
r¢muneration arc revicwed arjnually by the Ch&irnian. These are benchlnarked against chHritsblt 0[¥￿niSatIonS
f 8 similar siz¢ And complexity.
Risk CfytNmlttee
The Risk Committee is a sub-¢ornmitt¢¢ of the Trustee Board Set up to asse&s the ch8rttV% risks, the best ways
ol mitigating them arjd znonitorittg progress ()n thi$. It is comprised of the CEO. the Director of OpcratlOll5, the
Treasurer ttu8tc¢ and two other trust¢¢s. Mat¢rial risks are eonsidercd on a rolling basis by thc Board.
Finance Group
The Finance Group monitors 8t￿ reviews all fift￿¢181 processes> procedures and policies. Any financial risk
i&sues raised a￿ brought ¢0 the Ribk Commilt¢¢ or the Trustee5 to gain approval for remedial action where
ne¢ded. The Group meet5 monthly to review the management a¢counLs ond the recording and usage of restricted
Funds.

(2020.. £3.32m) was restricted in nature. The charity t￿)1¢81]Y w¢ives most of its in¢ome from donations,
partieularly at its annual gala ball. Durin8 the previous financial y¢ar 201912020. £1.55m was raised at the Gala
Ball. Due to Covid-19 the charity was unable to hold a Gala Ball in the financial year to 31. March 2021 but
£1.06m was raised vit1ually in November 2020.
Gifts in Kind omountin8 to £0.32m (2020.. £1.92m) were recorded for th¢ pcriod. Th&se lgrgely rclate to the
valu¢ as$ignod tt> profcssional time and ¢xpertise and medical cquipmcnt donated by medical and hcalthcare
professionals and mcdical instiNiions. Thcy werc lowcr than the previous year due to the restrictions on activity
