Section D Achievements and performance At the Annual General Meeting of the Society on 29 September 2022 the **Summary of the main** proposal of the Executive Committee to introduce free ISSS membership **achievements of the charity** for residents in low and lower-middle income countries was approved by **during the year** the membership. The introduction of a waiver of subscription fees for low and lower-middle income countries has resulted in a large growth in membership, with 516 members joining as a result. Almost three quarters of the membership of the Society are now based in L/LMIC regions, and it has greatly increased the reach of the Society. The seventh Seed Ecology meeting of the ISSS was held in Oviedo, Spain on 6-9 September 2022. The ISSS sponsored the meeting, awarding a grant to the meeting organiser, Borja Jimenez-Alfaro, at the University of Oviedo. The grant was used to support the attendance of 12 students/early career researchers enabling them to present at the meeting. In September 2022, the ISSS awarded Lifetime Membership Awards to Prof Hugh Pritchard and Dr Henk Hilhorst in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the Society. Two webinars were organised jointly by the ISSS and the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA): 28 June 2022 – Seed development and viability; Speakers: Dr Duarte Figueiredo and Dr Jose B. França-Neto. 14 December 2022 – Web-based resources for seed scientists; Speakers: Dr David Merritt, Dr Simone Pedrini and Dr Kirk Remund. The webinars are part of a series which started in 2021 and take place twice per year. 180-280 participants registered to attend the webinars, which are open to all. A special issue ‘Seed Innovation Systems for the 21[st] Century’ was published in Seed Science Research in September 2022. The special issue featured 8 papers from the ISSS Conference in 2021. In July 2022 the ISSS was a beneficiary of the estate of the late Prof Marc Cohn, receiving a legacy donation of £349,261. The funds will be used to support the objects of the charity through an increase in funding available for the ISSS conferences and the introduction of best poster/presentation awards for students and early career researchers at ISSS conferences.

## **Debtors**

## **Current asset investments**

Goods or services provided as part of a charitable activity are measured at net realisable value based on the service potential provided by items of stock.

Work in progress is valued at cost less any foreseeable loss that is likely to occur on the contract. Debtors (including trade debtors and loans receivable) are measured on initial recognition at settlement amount after any trade discounts or amount advanced by the charity. Subsequently, they are measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be received.

The charity has investments which it holds for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a maturity date less than one year. These include cash on deposit and cash equivalents with a maturity of loss than one year held for investment purposes rather than to meet short-term cash commitments as they fall due.

They are valued at fair value except where they qualify as basic financial instruments.

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of The Intnerational Society for Seed Science (“the charity”)**

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2023.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

Since the charity’s gross income exceeded £250,000 your examiner must be a member of a body listed in section 145 of the Act. I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, which is one of the listed bodies.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

This report is made solely to the charily's trustees, as a body, in accordance with Part 4 of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008. My work has been underaken so that I might state to the charity's trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an Independent Examiner’s Report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity's trustees as a body, for my work or for this report.
