District Chair, Chris Kennard

As I am sure you have noticed, this has been another tumultuous for the Scouting and the 22nd.

However, throughout the trials and tribulations of the year, the Leaders of the 22nd have provided an outlet and consistency for the young people when the rest of world has been uncertain.

Chair’s Report

Yet again they have stayed positive, embraced change and technologies and held up the values of Scouting, whilst delivering a brilliant program and supporting our young people.

As a scouting parent, you have my heartfelt thanks. As we look forward to the next 12 months, I am sure the young people will continue to enjoy the challenges and fun provided by the leadership team. We can also hope for a bit of stability in the team over the coming year from the Exec, GSL and the Leadership team.

GSL Report

and dedication that my team has put in. Without them we could not have had the successful year that we have. Since taking over the group as GSL in July, the group has continued from strength to strength and is growing steadily. The approach this year has been a mixed bag of both virtual sessions and in person sessions in the Scout Hall. Which I believe that all the young people enjoyed.

Our latest project includes buying new quality kit for the hall so we can run the best possible meetings we can. We are also preparing to open the first Squirrels Drey in Cardiff, hopefully in the first few months of 2022.

In the coming year I am looking forward to camping again as a group, and getting back out doing more adventurous activities that everyone has missed over the past 2 years of lockdowns.

I want to say a massive thank you to all the parents who have chipped in to help our sessions run smoothly, as well as a massive thank you to the leadership team who keep on keeping on.

Finally, we are always looking for new volunteers to help us make the magic happen, so if you’re interested in getting involved please let me or any of the leaders know and we can find a role for you.

Beavers Report

Members: 24 Young Leaders: 3 Leaders: 4

2021 was a strange year for everyone, but we found ourselves finding new and innovative ways to keep Beavers enthusiastic! At the beginning of the year we were on Zoom and planned activities such as yoga, making pizzas and baking. When we were able to come back to in person meetings in April, thankfully the weather was on our side! We were able to spend time in our garden. We took part in the ‘Keep Wales Tidy’ scheme where we have done some gardening. We have been able to meet outside of the Scout hall by walking down to the Rec and playing a Pokemon wide game. We also didn’t leave the cooking to be done at home - we made pasta and chocolate filled bananas on a fire. We have also had sessions with all the groups such as our Summer Fun day in August, meeting Jo Stevens MP on Parliament Day and our Winter Wonderland themed end of term party.

Cubs Report

Members: 22 Young Leaders: 1 Leaders: 4

2021-2022 was an exciting year for the 22nd Cubs as we did our best to come back face to face safely for the young people, volunteers, and families. The section had been going from strength to strength thanks to parents' and carers' extra help when the volunteers needed it. We had a successful chippy hike, made pasta, carved pumpkins, and did lots of crafts! Hopefully the nice weather will hold out so we can do more outdoor adventures, and plan some trips and camps. Thanks to all who helped the 22nd Cubs over the last year - Akela (Alex)

2021 for the Scouts was a mixed bag of activities. At the start of the year, we were back on Zoom with a variety of activities, building the young people's skills in cooking and the creative arts before ending the term with a visit from the local mountain rescue.

Scouts Report

Members: 30 Young Leaders: 3 Leaders: 3

As spring moved into summer were once again able to meet outdoors, allowing us to do some of the more adventurous activities, including archery, pioneering and a visit to the aquapark. The year ended by building on these skills and taking advantage of some good weather, we also got to put some of the practical skills learnt earlier in the year to use in a couple of hikes.

Squirrels

Polly and Carla from the Beaver team are really excited to open Squirrels in 2022. They will need a team to support them, as Early Years youngsters do need more attention.

Beavers

Vacancies (Sections)

As the Beavers team are running Squirrels, we’ll need a few extra paws on deck to help keep Beavers in ship-shape. Polly is happy to run both sections for the short term but would like to recruit two new Assistant Leaders for Beavers in the long run.

Cubs

Cubs would like some extra volunteers to help manage the young peoples’ excitement during meetings and to support Leaders during activities.

Our wonderful longstanding secretary Sarah Nash has told us that she’d like to step down but is happy to continue until her replacement is found.

Vacancies (Committee)

Sarah is happy to have a chat about what the role involves, so if you’re interested, please get in touch.

Committee

As youngsters tend to grow, we are looking for a Beavers parent/carer to join the Exec as a Parent Rep to make sure the Beavers’ voices continue to be heard.

We would like to have an older youth voice on our Committee, so we are keen to recruit a volunteer 18-25. This would be fab on university and job applications!
