## **Chairman’s Report 16[th] February 2022** 

This is my tenth Chairman’s Report, last year I said that ‘rather than looking back at the terrible year we had experienced; we would look to the future’ and once again I intend to take this approach. 

So, Albeit not up to levels last seen in 2019, the hall and playing fields have been used more this year than last. We continue to see our hall bookings increase, indeed we have two weddings already booked this year, so life does go on! 

We are also expecting to hold a 4 day party to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee within the village with the VH and playing fields playing a major part, details of which can be found on the various notice boards around the village as well as on our web site. 

## **Highlights and Notable Achievements** 

## **Clubs** 

**Bowls:** Our bowls club continue to be well supported and enjoyed a very successful season, from the start of Covid reopening they played the whole of the Dalesman League, which they won for an 8[th] successive year and also played just over half of the Bateson League. 

With Harrogate and Ladies Private leagues not playing, the club took the opportunity to ‘get to know each other better’ by playing more internal triple competitions. These triple competitions matched players of different abilities and experience, resulting in a ‘hard fought, competitive but at the same time fun competition. 

Looking forward the Bowls Club is intending to update their playing facilities with a new ‘pavilion’ and new benches around the green, Several current players have already ‘bought seats’ and we thank them for their generosity. 

**Cricket** : Once again our cricket club had a very successful year both on and off the field. The first team won the division and were promoted. We also came runners-up in our Wednesday night league. 

We again fielded a 2[nd] team made up mainly of juniors who gained a great deal of experience of playing competitive league cricket. Our 2[nd] team also won the ‘Fair Play award’ and once again our pitch won the Ground Mark award for the facilities and pitch as voted for by visiting teams. 



We played U9, U11, U13, U15 and U18 cricket and credit must go to all the volunteers who looked after and coached these young people. We are now training most Friday evenings in the summer and it is hoped to create a friendly, family atmosphere where all children are encouraged and engaged. 

Another initiative was to form the Bishop Monkton All Stars, this is a group of 5-8 year who are new to cricket. In the first year 32 children enjoyed playing alongside their parents and it was an absolute ‘sell-out’ so successful was the all Stars initiative that our cricket club have already formed the Bishop Monkton Dynamos as a follow-on team of 8-11 year olds for next season. 

Off the field, we have been successful in applying for 3 £1,000 separate grants to aid their development. 

Sponsorship has come in via Myrings Estate Agents and NSW Electrical and also Jacksons Motor & Agricultural Engineers, and we thank these companies for their very much needed generosity. 

**Hall:** The majority of hall development happened the previous year, however we have taken the opportunity to update our electrical installation and alarm system as well as replacing our old wooded doors with metal ones. 

**Web site:** Once again I would like to thank Richard Field, Martin Minett and Colin Philpott (amongst others!) who update the web site and keep our village current with what’s going on, it really is an asset that villages and even towns larger than ours don’t possess. 

Last year I took the initiative to thank our Web Site reporters for their hard work and endeavours, when reviewing my previous notes, I notice last year the web site had 800,000 hits since it’s launch in 2005; this year it stands at over 902,000 hits, that’s an increase of 102,000 in a year or 280 per day, every day! 

As I said last year and I don’t mind repeating myself ‘it’s just incredible’ So once again congratulations to Richard, Martin and Colin for doing such a fantastic and professional job. 

**Finance:** As you can expect it has been a difficult year financially with reduced income from our affiliated groups and pretty much zero income from hall rentals, however our bank account shows an increase to our funds of some £9,330. When we drill down, we can see that £44,068 came from Government Grants, of which £22,104 was Covid related with £21,963 coming from commuted sums. 

These Covid related grants will not be around next year, the concern is the reduced income from hall hire and ground rental, which has dropped from £20,775 in 2019, to £16,730 in 2020 to £8,024 in the 2021 accounts. Also when we consider we have not had any income from the annual Hog Roast which was usually £3,000 per annum, it is an area that we need to manage. 



So, whilst I may paint a grim picture, I do believe that given our fantastic facility our future is ‘rosy and secure’, as previously mentioned Lesley our booking co-ordinator has received 2 wedding bookings already this year, she has also received a regular Thursday booking for the NHS, Yoga wants to re-start and private parties are picking up, so we can see lots of activity. 

We do expect a lag before people start to socialise again to pre-covid levels, However, we are well placed to ride this out and thanks must go to Mervyn for running the accounts as professionally and ‘tight’ as he does and not forgetting Bob, Mick and John for repairing machinery that would possibly have had to been replaced. 

We have the grand total of £62,331 split between our Building Society and Bank Current accounts, expenditure in 2020-21 was circa £42,858, which was an increase of £17,636 the previous year, this was mainly down to new doors £14,640, and £3,400 spent updating of our alarm and electrical system. This was off-set by income from ground and hall rental, affiliated club income, commuted sums and Covid related grants of £52,189. 

As mentioned last year our ‘standstill’ costs total approximately £18,000 per annum, so dividing one into another we can see that we have time to get ‘our show back on the road’ but we must all do our bit. 

**Looking Forward:** Plans are well underway for the Queens Platinum Jubilee which takes place over 4 days starting on Thursday 2[nd] June with the celebrations running through to Sunday 5[th] June, 2022, anyone who would like to be part of the organising committee can either see Angie Archbold or myself.

Lastly, I would like to record our appreciation as always to Alan Wigby who continues to ensure that our cricketers, footballers and croquet players enjoy playing on a surface second to none, to Mick Jackson, Bob Upton and John Binns for the many hours they spend up there tinkering round the Hall and also on the outfields in so doing making our grounds a most beautiful and picturesque facility, to Lesley Shervington our booking coordinator and secretary for production of our meeting minutes and letter writing and lastly to Mervyn Beecroft for being the wise old Yorkshire man that he is with our accounts.
