CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT
22 YEARS OF THE KIPUNGANI SCHOOLS TRUST
Since the KST was founded at the beginning of 2000 with just £10 and three trustees it has raised over £1.35million and spent over £1.25ml with which the KST has now built 17 primary schools with places for 14,500 children along the coast of Kenya; established an 18th school for disabled children, now appropriately called ‘Amazing School’; constructed a Koran study class for Muslim children at Azhar, mPeketoni; built a small polytechnic at Adu & is now close to completing a much larger one at Marikebuni (both near Malindi) to help give primary school children who don’t go onto secondary school the chance to learn a trade; employed countless teachers (on average two at each completed school on an ongoing basis) and fully funded over 400 children through their secondary school careers.
All of this has been possible because of some extraordinary acts of generosity on the part of our donors and funders and the considerable talents and dedication of Mary Jo and Louis van Aardt and their daughter Emilie, who manage all the building and maintenance projects, and of Heike Sadrozinski, who singlehandedly runs the secondary school sponsorship programme. Thank you, all of you!
The need to support children’s primary education on the coast of Kenya has never been greater. Please help the Kipungani Schools Trust continue to support those schools we have built and those we are yet to build, and to give both this generation of school children and many generations to come – not a hand out but a Hand Up.

THE KST IN 2021-2022
This annual report and accounts is the first 12 month report and accounts that has a June end, a 30[th] June 2022 end. That’s because last year the Trustees, with the full approval of the charity commission, felt it preferable to have a mid-year financial end because it optically increases the longevity of the annual report as it will be badged with the preceding year for 8 rather than just 2 of its 12 month shelf life year.
The 12 months to June 2022 began very sadly with the news of the tragic death in August 2021 of Christian Derold, the KST’s single largest individual donor.
The tribute to Christian below was first included in the KST’s 2020-2021 annual report, but as this year’s report formerly covers the date of his passing, it seems not only proper but deserved that the heartfelt words written about Christian are also included in this annual report.
The aftereffects of Covid (in response to which the Kenyan Government shut all schools for a total of 9 months between 16[th] March 2020 and 4th January 2021) continue to most acutely felt by schools, like all those built by the KST, in rural area, largely because of limited access to online learning provision during the pandemic. In fact recent research has suggested that school children in the rural areas of Kenya fell behind, not by just the 9 months that the schools were closed, but by over 12 months. Covid has added another urgent imperative to the work that the KST does, not least to our secondary school sponsorship programme.

THE KST SECONDARY SCHOOL SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMME:
Inevitably the focus of many previous annual reports has been upon the KST’s now extensive building projects, but that has been to do a considerable disservice to the secondary school fees sponsorship scheme that the KST has run for over 18 years.
The KST’s secondary school sponsorship scheme is run by the remarkable Heike Sadrozinski who is regularly in Kenya, where she has a house on Lamu Island, where two of the KST schools stand. From Lamu Heike can travel by boat to the mainland, where 4 more KST schools have been built, and then by road towards Malindi where the KST has built 11 schools. Heike is extraordinarily dedicated and equally efficient, and without her it would literally be impossible for the KST to continue with our empowering sponsorship programme.
The KST endeavors to sponsor at least 100 children through secondary school at any one time. This is a four year commitment, but a four year commitment on the part of both KST and student.
Every year 25 plus children from the KST’s 18 schools, half of whom will be girls and half boys, are awarded sponsorship. These sponsorships are not allocated geographically or by school, nor are they means tested, but are dependent upon the results of the KCPE, or Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, the national exam that all children take at the end of their primary school careers.
The top performing students in the KCPE are awarded sponsorships. This may appear very one dimensional, but not only is it in practice very difficult to allocate places in any other way, but secondary school in Kenya is considerably more demanding than Primary school, and so students do require both the academic capacity and importantly the commitment to make a success of their four year experience.

At the end of every term the sponsored students are required to send a photograph or show their full term grade to Heike. Above is just such an example from a third year student! The KST sponsored student above has been awarded an overall grade for the term of B- despite coming 8[th] out of his 177 year group!

If the students fail to provide evidence of the terms grades, or if the overall grade submitted is below a C, they are given a terms grace. But if there are two consecutive terms of either no grade submissions, or of two term grades D or below, then potentially we may have to withdraw sponsorship. In practice this rarely happens, although inevitably, be it for family reasons or of their own volition, some of the KST sponsored children do fail to complete their four years at secondary school.
For whatever reason a child might fail to complete their secondary school career, an extra place will be allocated in the following year’s awards, in our endeavor to maintain a roster of 100 sponsored secondary school children at any one time. Currently there are 101 KST sponsored secondary school students - 47 boys and 54 girls.
Below is a letter from Beatrice, one of the students who has now completed her four year secondary school career. A four year experience that would have been denied her if it hadn’t been for Madam Heike and for ‘the great financier’ Mr. Matthew Dobbs, who every year for the last decade has at any one time has been funding 30 KST secondary school sponsorships, and in total close to 100 children.
My name is Beatrice Rehema Kombe, I was one of the students who were sponsored by the kipungani schools trust. I wish to say thank you to Mr. Matthew Dobbs as the great financer working hand in hand with Madam Heike as the patron with the help of Mr Eluid as the e co-ordinator. I would like to take this golden chance on behalf of all the students who completed their secondary studies last year 2022 to say thank you very much for the sponsorship and may the Almighty God bless you, because I personally I understand that for really it was not an easy thing but finally it came to be successful. Thank you very much and may God be with you in all your doings.

FUNDING & SPENDING
Between July 2021 and June 2022 £36,038 was generously donated to the KST. The largest single donors were David Dimbleby and Belinda Giles who through their charitable foundation, The Folkington Trust gave another £20,000 as they had promised last year.
The extraordinarily and relentlessly generous Matthew Dobbs personally gave another £7,200. Matthew’s generous contributions over the last 10 years have been absolutely instrumental in enabling the KST to continue with its secondary school sponsorship and teacher funding programmes.
And Rachel Dangar contributed another £1,600 form her sales of Kenyan made clothing through her website Hoboko
The thanks to the above are inestimable, the difference that all of them have made and are making is very tangible.
In addition to the above, HMRC kindly refunded £7,238 in a Gift Aid Reclaim.
In the 12 months to Junes 30[th] 2022 £34,387 was spent on teachers’ salaries and secondary school sponsorships and on our ongoing building maintenance programme
Our 2021-22 receipts and expenditure bring the total income of the KST over the last 22 years to over £1.35ml and our total spend to over £1.25ml and we ended the year with a healthy but very necessary £113,855 in the charity’s two UK bank accounts for our ongoing projects and sponsorship commitments.
The full accounts and financial history of the KST is at the end of this report.

THE KST STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS:
As ever I am as hugely grateful to the KST staff and volunteers as I am to the donors and fund raisers. Without the extraordinary commitment and talents of those on the ground in Kenya, the relentless generosity of our donors would largely go to waste. None of the considerable success of the KST could have been achieved without the dedication of those listed below.
Heike Sadrozinski now runs the secondary school sponsorship programme entirely voluntarily. This is a huge undertaking and without her it just would not be possible to sponsor the 100 children that we are now funding through secondary school at any one time. Heike and her husband Christian also raised all the funding for Ocean View Primary School and project managed the building of the school’s second block. Furthermore Heike and Christian have built another school, Mtondoni Primary School, under the auspices of the “Kipungani School Trust Germany”, a separate charity set up by Heike and Christian so they can more effectively raise money in Germany.
I as always leave the greatest thanks to last - because without Mary-Jo & Louis van Aardt and now their daughter Emilie, the Trust’s three project managers in Kenya – the KST would no more than flounder in its attempts to change the lives of children in Kenya. Charity in Africa is not about how much money is donated it is about how effectively that money is spent. The fact that so much over the last 22 years has been achieved with such modest funds is testament to the considerable expertise, skill and commitment of Mary Jo & Louis and Emilie van Aardt. Thank you.

THE KST TRUSTEES:
The KST now has four trustees; two founder trustees, John Seagrim, the chairman, and Georgina Hood, a remarkable early years educationalist who started and runs Paint Pots, the leading Montessori nursery school provider in West London; and two younger trustees in Ochre Seagrim who has just completed a master’s in International Education at Oxford, and Ned Seagrim who has just completed a master’s in Business Management at the Judge Business School, Cambridge.
This is undeniably a family run charity, but it is a family that has grown up and been shaped by the Kipungangi Schools Trust for the last 23 years, and it is a family which I believe has the talents and most importantly the commitment to take the KST forward over the next 23 years and beyond.
Kipangajeni Primary School, The KST’s newest school, built entirely as a result of the fund raising endeavors of Ned Seagrim, now a KST trustee!

A PERSONAL TRIBUTE TO CHRISTIAN DEROLD, by John Seagrim
The tribute below to the late Christian Derold, the KST’s single largest individual donor was written following his tragic death in a gliding accident in August 2021.
“Christian Derold was my friend, my dear friend, for 15 years. I was and am still heartbroken at his going, most of all for his remarkable wife Hilli and his wonderful daughters, Emma and Maria. This small reflection, which describes just a part of our friendship and but a much smaller part of Christian’s exceptional life, tells a little of what an utterly wonderful man Christian was and what his friendship meant to me and what his generosity has meant to the Kipungani Schools Trust.
Christian was unfailingly direct, he could sometimes appear a little abrupt, but that was because there was no side to him. He was one of the few people I’ve ever known who just said it how it was. But because he was not only totally straight but utterly decent and inestimably kind, Christian’s directness was always welcome, always refreshing and frequently very funny!
Christian was in fact one of the kindest men I’ve ever met. His deep concern for those around him and indeed for humanity ran right through him. And it was that concern together with his kindness, his generosity and his loyalty that made Christian the very best sort of friend, a quiet friend who was always, always there - most particularly when times were less good or adversity struck.
And Christian was extraordinarily generous. When he and I first talked about the Kipungani Schools Trust 15 years ago, at supper in Hong Kong, he declared with his usual welcome directness “I will build you a school” - and of course because it was Christian who said it - He did!

A school for 1200 kids in a village called Kaembeni, 15 miles inland from Malindi, where there was nothing but subsistence farming and grinding poverty. Christian was clear, this was to be a school that would be entirely funded by Christian, Hilli, Maria and Emma.
So we built a wonderful school with ten classrooms all with verandas to keep them cool and guttering and tanks to collect the rain; and a staff block with a head teacher’s office and a library; latrines and a little cook house to give the kids a meal. And all funded by Christian and his beloved girls whose names are painted on the wall in gratitude for all to see.
Christian’s generosity of course didn’t stop there, he gave a second substantial donation to the Kipungani Schools Trust and a third as a wedding present when I remarried again four years ago. And Christian kept saying, if you need funds please ask. I didn’t ask but Christian just kept offering.
So there is a school in Kenya that stands proud because of Christian, a school through which 2,500 kids have already passed and through which thousands more will. Christian, Hilli, Emma and Maria have already changed, and Radically changed, the lives of those 2,500 kids and will radically change the lives of thousands upon thousands of kids in the years to come.
And that’s perhaps the point about Christian, he may have gone but he has left a legacy that has changed and will change so many. I’m a different and a better man for counting Christian as my friend and then there are his 2,500 and counting friends in Kenya!

THE KST PRMARY SCHOOL MODEL
The Kipungani Schools Trust has always operated with a specific “model” that is designed to ensure that as many of the school building projects remain, upon completion, as self-sustaining as possible for the foreseeable future.
After independence Kenya had a surprisingly comprehensive network of Government primary schools, but many of these schools, although supported by the Government with the provision of some teachers, had had little or no investment in their buildings nor teaching materials. The upshot is that many school buildings are unsafe, have collapsed or are in a state of near dereliction - and in all cases, the school was originally built for a fraction the number of children who could now attend.
Quite deliberately 15 of the 17 primary school rebuilding projects that we have undertaken in the last 22 years have been examples of these Government registered schools along the northern half of the coast of Kenya.
The advantages of rebuilding and substantially enlarging Government Primary Schools rather than establishing “New” schools are four fold:
Firstly , with existing registered Government schools there is no issue of land ownership, nor does the Trust have to buy any land (which is not easy given that the ownership of property in Kenya is frequently in dispute);
Secondly , it ensures that The KST does not compete with the Kenyan Government in the provision of primary education, but rather supports the Government’s 2003 declaration to make primary school education available to all without charge;

Thirdly , in every case, upon completion the Government has provided more teachers– allowing an ever greater number of children to attend; Fourthly , school sponsors and donors tend to be happier to fund the capital costs of a project in the knowledge that the running costs once completed are de minimus.
The two schools that the KST have built that were not originally Government registered schools, “Ocean View” and “Kibaoni”, had the status of “Community Schools”, ie they had been set up by the local community using their own funds for buildings, teacher’s salaries and materials. In both the case of Ocean View and Kibaoni, The KST undertook to completely rebuild and enlarge the schools on the understanding that they both applied for Government Primary School Status, when the work was near completion. In both cases this was granted by the Government, with all the benefits of additional Government funded teachers that that brings!
In fact, although the KST provides on average 2 additional teachers in each of the 17 schools as part of our ongoing commitment, over 80% of the teachers are now funded by the Government.
The KST’s insistence on only building registered Government schools or schools that then register for the equivalent status, ensures that if The KST was, for whatever reason unable to carry on in Kenya, the schools would carry on under the auspices of the Government.

THE KST FIVE FOUNDING PRINCIPLES:
The five founding principles of the Kipungani Schools Trust remain at its core and it is the implementation of these principles, together with the capabilities of its staff and volunteers, which has allowed the trust to achieve so much and for such relatively small sums of money over the last 22 years.
-
All the money that is raised is sent to Kenya without deduction. The KST spends none of its donations on administration or fundraising.
-
In Kenya all the money is spent ethically, efficiently and with total transparency so as to ensure the most cost effective and sustainable results for our donors and the school children we are supporting.
-
The KST only engages local builders, only employs local labourers and only uses local materials. This is to ensure the maximum benefit from the building projects goes to the local community. The KST is totally committed to the use of environmental and sustainable building methods and materials.
-
The KST is in Kenya to enable not to dictate. The KST will build schools, pay for teaching materials and equipment, fund teachers and sponsor children at secondary schools. But the curriculum, the choice of staff, teaching methods and running of the school are the responsibility of the schools, their governors and their local communities.
-
The KST makes every effort to help and encourage the Kenyan Government to fulfil their commitment made in 2003, to provide a primary school education for every child in Kenya.

THE KST FUTURE:
In this increasingly uncertain and insecure world, the KST must represent certainty and security for the children and staff of the Kipungani School Trust’s schools. It is that certainty that will encourage dedication from the teaching staff and commitment from the pupils. We will continue to look after the schools that we have already built. Visiting them, repairing them and where necessary enlarging them. Too much good work in Kenya has gone to waste because charities and organizations have left once a project has been completed. For the KST our commitment is unending. The building of a school is just the beginning of a relationship that we hope will bring security and opportunity to the school and its community.
