Community Health Around Torpoint (CHAT) Annual General Meeting Held at Chatlink on 3[rd] July 2025
As we approach our 35th year of CHAT’s existence I am pleased to say we are still a very visible part of the community. This is thanks to the work of the wonderful volunteers, Trustees and our Community Development Manager, Becky Lingard. Not forgetting our auditor, Jean Morgan. This year has seen some of our Trustees go through difficult times and we wish them well. It would be wonderful if we could attract a few more volunteers to step into the role. I am also pleased to say we are solvent although spiralling costs and the economic climate as impacted this year.
The ‘Whats App’ communication groups work really well for disseminating information as does the Facebook page which is public facing. A newsletter has been regularly circulated highlighting the numerous groups and activities happening.
Volunteer Week was celebrated at a local hostelry with a two-course lunch and was well attended and received by all. The volunteer coffee morning continues although needs to be better attended so that information from the management can be better disseminated.
CHAT Community Shop has since our last AGM undergone several updates and changes. Problems with the toilet and lights have now been resolved and heaters have been installed to make the kitchen and storage areas a more comfortable working area. However, we still have issues with water ingress into the storage area and to the fire door area from the upstairs flat which is at present being addressed hopefully? Unfortunately, we recently had our main window broken during a fracas outside and liaison with the insurance company and the landlord is ongoing as the glass needs to be safety glass and doesn’t fit into the metal framework. We have displayed a comprehensive list of acceptable donations due to lots of unsaleable items being ‘hidden’ in bags. We are still using CTR for recycling non-saleable items however financial recompense has been reduced significantly. We have also had to change our waste arrangements on the closure of Rame Refuse this past year and now it is collected fortnightly by Biffa and a large wheelie bin is in situ in the back lane. A new hoover and till were purchased in the last 12 months. The fire evacuation plan was updated in September along with our risk assessments. PAT testing took place during June
and a new company was invited to service the fire extinguishers and do a fire check on the premises. Finally, the sale rail price was increased to £1 an item and we are endeavouring not to store seasonal goods due to lack of storage space.
Chatlink continues to offer information and advice and office accommodation with 2953 people using the facilities in the past twelve months. Additional bookings for ‘We are with you’ and a new booking for ‘Step into Wellness’ have been welcomed which is all good news with various ad hoc bookings taking place throughout the year. We are pleased to welcome the local Foodbank to our premises operating on a Wednesday and Friday weekly. We were sorry to lose part of Trevillis House booking. We are very thankful that our volunteers have been able to cover for sickness and holidays in the main but additional volunteers, as always, are much needed. The volunteer coffee mornings are well attended by ex-office staff along with a few current members. The fire evacuation plan, insurances, PAT testing, fire extinguisher testing has all been completed and the annual service for the stairlift has also been completed. All window lock keys have been identified and the main alarm number has been changed. The BT contract for the telephone system was updated but had caused considerable problems during the changeover period. The door on the cupboard in room 5 was mended by the landlord. We said a farewell to Carol Llewellyn who resigned due to family commitments. We welcomed Ann to do our weekly cleaning and also arranging relief cover for the same. Lastly, we sold our laser printer as it was no longer required.
Our various groups are continuing with the Food and Wellbeing project receiving much needed support from the local Freemasons and the Dockyard sports and social club we thank them for their donations. Requests for help fluctuate throughout the year but referrals are now tending to come from the Foodbank themselves, NHS staff or Social Services.
The walking group continues on a monthly basis with only a couple having to be cancelled due to the weather.
CHAT café has been replaced with a cream tea afternoon once a month with different health issues being highlighted each month.
The Diabetic Circle has seen some changes in the last 12 months and has evolved into the Diabetic Social Group with a Diabetes Awareness Group running alongside. It was hoped this would involve the surgery referring patients and working with the social prescriber. This unfortunately has not happened and a relaunch is anticipated later in the year. However, the social group continues with its coach trips and talks and is firmly under CHAT’s umbrella with great support from Becky.
The Lunch Club continues to thrive and numbers are usually in excess of 40 each month with a short break being arranged for December to Longleat.
The Chatink Lottery supports Chatlink in its day to day running costs with numbers still being available to purchase.
The Memory in Mind dementia group increased their meetings to weekly to include the cream tea week as per their request. They enjoy various activities which are arranged to stimulate the participants and the support the carers receive is invaluable. Becky has also completed Dementia Training.
Kingsand Bingo continues on a monthly basis with numbers fluctuating during the winter months especially.
We continue to work with the Torpoint Town Council and Library Hub and we attend the Patient Participation Group and Diversity Meetings feeding back concerns from the public and listening to what is developing.
We receive minutes from the transport group (RPPTUG) to disseminate and keep an active eye on the Town Project Board attending meetings and getting the minutes.
Becky attends the Millbrook Meet Up when possible, to disseminate information and learn what is going on in the Rame Peninsula.
We have been invited once more to attend the Civic Parade from the Mayor. We have also been chosen as the recipient of fundraising from the Mosquito sailing Club social group for the next 12 months for which we are very grateful.
I finish my report as always with the plea to spread the news about our organisation in the hope that we can attract new volunteers. Thank you to all who make CHAT what it is we are very blessed.
