CHAIRPERSONS REPORT FOR CHAT 2021/2022

Thank you to everyone for attending today and as always particular thanks to my fellow Trustees without whom CHAT could not function. We are as ever thankful to Jean Morgan for auditing our accounts and to our Community Development Manager, Becky Lingard, for keeping us up to date, informed and focal within the community during what has been again a difficult year.

We have been, as a community, experiencing very difficult times both economically and socially and it’s with Becky’s help and experience that many families have been assisted with small grants of food or wellbeing packages and my sincerest thanks go to her for her dedication and fortitude on CHAT’s behalf during this period. I am proud to say that almost all requests for help during the last twelve months have been successful and applications continue although slowed in the last couple of months.

The Torpoint Co-op have chosen us as their local charity for the past twelve months enabling the food and wellbeing grants to continue and nearly £2,000 have been received to date.

Life steadily got back to some normality after the main Covid outbreaks diminished which has meant that the Community Shop was able to re-open albeit with masks and sanitizer being used and a restriction of numbers in the shop. The shop has received a few requests for help which in the main have been granted for example a special needs child friendly bedroom, help towards a scout attending a world jamboree to name a couple. The Jubilee Window dressing was well received and we thank those responsible. We have had a couple of issues with the electrics and water ingress which as all being dealt with by the landlords agent.

Chatlink also reopened its doors welcoming back Toe Bees, Craftlink and some counselling services. Most of the counselling services from Outlook Southwest continued to work from home leaving some days without any usage. This was helped by Becky instigating an arts and craft programme utilising the empty sessions which are still ongoing. We will be getting a new A4 photocopier shortly to replace the larger version we have at present which will save us a considerable amount of money and the new telephone system is working well with calls being able to be taken remotely, a particularly good feature during the pandemic.

All PAT testing has been completed for another year and our insurances have all been renewed. We have also requested from our landlord a date for testing the fire alarm at Chatlink and have made enquiries about the possibility of a new fire door at the bottom of the stairs to facilitate easier exit in the event of fire. I am also thankful to Sue Walsh and Becky for their work on the Fire Safety policy which was quite in depth.

This year saw the launch of our new website and its very appealing in its format. The history of CHAT is now complete and soon we will be able to input information, posters and the like into the site ourselves once training has been received. We have already received enquiries through this platform.

New groups started this year have included the Bereavement Group and the Dementia Group both being held at St James’Church hall for ease of access. The launch for these groups took the form of a family day which was very well attended. These are going well and will be built upon during the next twelve months. The Kingsand Bingo has been reinstated after Covid as has the Luncheon Club with around 40 people attending monthly. Some of the

groups started during the pandemic such as Phone Buddies, Book Club have been moth balled at present because of the lack of need. However, the walking group is proving popular once more and the holiday club to Newquay last November was very successful.

We continually network with other agencies such as the RPPTUG, TTP, PPG and Penntorr Surgery etc and are pleased to report that we have received plastic free status set up by the Torpoint Town Partnership. This has been enhanced by our recycling within the shop and elsewhere. We have also submitted a newsletter and pin logo to be included in the Time Capsule being buried in the raised bed in North Road courtesy of the Town Council.

CHAT was pleased to celebrate our volunteers during Volunteer Week this year by treating them all to lunch at the local hostelry which I believe was enjoyed. Thank you to all our present volunteers for all they do it is much appreciated.

We have welcomed a few new volunteers this year but as always, a lack of volunteers both on the committee, in the shop and office causes problems and as ever my plea goes out to anyone who feels they can help if only in a small way. Please spread the word.
